(We got permission from CheapyD to post this commercial-type post).
Hardcore Gamer Magazine is a new print and online magazine on the market! We're looking to bulk up our readership numbers as well as find out some info about them.
Therefore, we're offering 6 issues of HGM to anyone willing to take the time to fill out the Hardcore Gamer Magazine...
Reader Survey! (http://www.hardcoregamermag.com/survey.html) (<-Make a big clicky!!)
(Valid to shipping addresses within US territories. Limit one per address.)
Current "12 issue" subscribers who fill out the survey will have 7 issues added on to their existing subs!
------------
We're also looking for affiliates. In addition to the print magazine, you can view the magazine online for free -- we make each issue of HGM available as a free PDF!
We're looking for web sites who are willing to host each issue (25-30 megs per). In exchange for hosting it, we'll print your website's logo and URL in the magazine for the months you host. Here are links to the issues we've made so far:
http://www.o-sd.com/hardcoregamermag/publicPDF/HGM_June.pdf (25 megs)
http://www.o-sd.com/hardcoregamermag/publicPDF/HGM_July.pdf (30 megs)
Edit: If bandwidth is an issue for you, hosting a torrent would be acceptable.
The only other thing we ask is that you let us know how many people downloaded it each month so we can keep stats for our advertisers.
To talk to us about affiliating, email affiliates@hardcoregamermag.com.
Regards,
Tim

As long as you don't pull that sleaze maneuver of automatically subscribing me for a year and sending the bill collectors after I've canceled (OXM I'm looking at you).
If you just stop sending me issues after the 6 (assuming I don't want to subscribe), then I'm game.

Thanks for the free trial. If we subscribe after our free trial, do the 6 magazines we receive count as part of the subscription? I'd assume no, but both EGM and OXM I've signed up for free trials and then I would subscribe and they then counted my "free" magazines as part of my paid sub. Magazine looks great, can't wait to receive my first issue.

To answer a few common questions:
Most everyone who fills out the survey within the next couple weeks will start with the August issue (July issues shipped last week).
We won't bill you if you don't renew after these 6 issues are up.
If you renew before your 6 issues arrive, your new sub will add on to the number you have left, not replace them.
Thanks for your support. Response to the offer has been great!

Thanks for the free 6-month subscription! I looked at the PDF files of the June and July magazines, and I think they look great. Much better than GamePro.
I know I can't track how many downloads it will get, but I added those two PDFs to the eD2K p2p network just a few minutes ago. Maybe it will help?

Thank you for all your support and kind words about the mag and our guides. I hope you all got your subs before we had to cut it off. We got aboutabazillion more responses than we though we would, so the offer period is over (but we'll still give every 100th person the free sub deal for filling out the survey).
We intend to make every issue a free PDF download forever, so you'll always be able to read the mag for free if you don't feel like paying for the printed one.

Pootie Thang's post is useful, because it tells those who have signed up that the magazine is shipping. PT also goes on to describe the quality (at least the print quality) of the magazine, which is also useful, and makes us anticipate the receiving the magazine even more.
Posting that you haven't received it yet serves no purpose in this situation. If many people had reported receiving it, posting that you had not yet received it is acceptable, because it lets others know that they may not all have gotten mailed at the same time, or that there could, potentially, be a problem with fulfillment. Thus far, only one person has posted receiving it, which makes having received it the exception to the rule.
I don't mean to be harsh, although I may get a few complaints for that anyway, I'm just trying to avoid a thread full of "I don't have it yet" and "Why hasn't mine arrived yet, other people got it yesterday." As Barney Fife would say, "Nip it in the bud".

K I looked through the entire magazine... not enough Previews which is okay. Reviews are short but they get to the point which I like a lot. Cover story is long and give good information. I'm defnitely liking the "Hardcore Feature" section as well as the Hardware reviews. Something I didn't like was the Cos play section (haha, wtf is this) and the code section. The strategy section was nice as well but needed more content. Something that they could add for the REVIEW section is a HD box. Letting the reader know if the game is like 480p, 720p, 1080i compatable or is it's 4:3 or 16:9. That will be well appreciated if they would be able to incorporate that somehow.

Got my free issue today and it's better than I expected. That being said, it's probably not a mag I'd subscribe to. It seemed a little too hardcore for my tastes. I'm a Nintendo junkie (GCN, GBA, DS) and while the magazine does include their games, it seemed to focus much more on the Grand Theft Auto and first person shooter crowd. So articles regarding Serious Sam, Grand Theft Auto, or games like The Warriors (fighting) don't interest me. I expect that out of any multiconsole magazine however.
I did like the review section as they seem to tell it like it is with some games getting less than a 2 out of 5. They also gave games that some "hardcore" gamers wouldn't give a chance like Kirby Canvas Curse a decent score (4.25 out of 5) so they seem very fair.
I was surprised to see an article about the sex scene in GTA. I thought this just came about a week or two ago so they were really on top of it.
I'm not a big fan of strategy guides and codes taking up magazine space because these are something anyone can get off the internet. This mag had a few pages devoted to this. Other features that didn't interest me were Japan (games in Japan I suppose), Anime Review, and Fan Art. The cosplay page also usually doesn't interest me but some of those girls changed that!
Overall, a decent mag but not one for me. I'll take a free issue anyday though!

Well it is called Hardcore Gamer's Magazine after all ;)
I am in Love with HGM! I loved the thick pages. Thanks for bringing me a mag with the same feel as EMG 10 years ago. I wasn't a big fan of the GTA stuff (GTA is far from Hardcore ;) ) and it would be cool if you stuck in a RPG page.

Anybody know of a way to check your subscription status? Perhaps a change-of-mailing-address website address is inside the magazine?
It would be nice to know if their records know of my existence. Opening up an HGM-less mailbox each day, despite jumping on this offer extremely quickly, is increasingly depressing.
At least if I can figure out whether I didn't make the cutoff, I can eliminate that small daily letdown. :)

Just got my first issue today. It seems to be a really good magazine. Much better than EGM but pretty similar to Game Informer. $24.99 seems to be a lot for a 1 year subscription (I think I got 2 year of EGM for that price). Also, if these are indeed the same guy who brought us Diehard Gamefan. Then these guys can go to HELL. I'll definitely not subscribe to them or buy it individually. A few years back when GameFan was still around (I know... it was many many years ago), I actually subscribed to their magazine. Guess how many issues I got out of my subscription. TWO freakin issues. After that, they went dead. Subscribers were not informed of such an event. There was no mention of it in the magazine itself. The website just shut down. All they did was took the money and ran with it. Those bastards..........

These are the people who created the great content of GameFan. They're neither the ones who ran the magazine when subscription fulfillment problems started, nor the ones who distributed it.
Blame Dave Halverson (who went on to pull the same disappearing act on Gamer's Republic subscribers, but has somehow thus far spared subscribers to Play [if there are any... I doubt many gave him another benefit of the doubt]) or the company which supposedly took over and screwed things up back then [Metropolis Media].

Gamer's Republic managed to pull a fast one on me too. I got 3 issues from a 2 year subscription plan. Guess I'm not very good at making wise decisions.
Thanks snowmizer for pointing it out.
Guess I'll probably subscribe to them then.
The reviews/previews are OK but the main selling point for me was the feature articles and the nice paper. Also, it is not over 50% advertisement like EGM.

Got my first issue (Vol.1 Issue 3) in the mail today. The magazine's got a nice feel to it (material-wise, don't know how else to describe it).
The review section is good; HGM actually sticks to 2.5/5 as average (instead of most mags, which would give average games 3.5/5). They're not afraid to give games the scores they deserve. The scores seem spot-on, btw.
I liked the miscellaneous features. It was cool seeing stuff about the homebrew scene and flash carts for the DS (stuff I doubt you'd see in EGM or GI, for legal reasons I'd guess).
Overall, the magazine's good. HGM tells it like it is and speaks to you as fellow gamers (i.e. not as positive-about-every-game, so-far-above-you journalists).

I certainly looks like Gamefan with full pages devoted to a single game with huge graphics . . . I wouldn't say its as good as EGM or Game Informer but I love game mags and will read it closely later.
I would subscribe for about $1 per issue but not more.

Gamer's Republic managed to pull a fast one on me too. I got 3 issues from a 2 year subscription plan. Guess I'm not very good at making wise decisions.
I got screwed by Gamer's Republic too... and since Gamefan folded twice over the span of a couple years, I royally got screwed by them twice (both times my subscription had just started too). It's hard to put faith in these guys.
Bitch and complain about EGM all you want but at least they are always reliable and always stay in business.
I did the survey but turns out it was after the free subscription period.

Briefly thumbed through it. Seems pretty good. Nice heavy paper and not many ads (which may explain the high subscription price). Lots of big visuals. Some of those cosplay girls on the last page look pretty good.

Got mine today. Like the layout w/ big pictures and thick pages. Just seems high quality to me. Doesn't seem to really be enough to warrant a subscription for 24.00 at the moment, but that may change. But this is a Great deal at 6 months free!

I think that it is a pretty decent magazine. Not my favorite, but I think that it has alot of potential. Plus, you cant beat the price ;-)
Mine just came today, and I flipped through it. Looks like a good read. Kudos to your desktop publisher(s), the layout is simply elegant. Got to love the smell of the glossy cover. The smell brings back memories of all the money I wasted in the 90's on baseball cards when I should have been buying copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Not sure about if it's legal or illegal.
As for refunds, it depends on who the publisher is... In Gamefan's case, I don't believe I was able to get any type of refund... my $20 went straight down the toilet. I was SOOL.
In the case of GameNow (formerly Expert Gamer, EGM2), when the magazine flopped, Ziff Davis gave me the option the switch the remaining issues left on my subscription to another magazine... I added some issues to my existing EGM subscription.

I finally received mine yesterday, too, here in Indiana.
Previews could use quite a bit of work. The reviews seemed right on the mark, though. Features were generally good... not sure there's a need for a page devoted to a recipe, however, for the Hardcore Submissions section. If that's the winner, I'd hate to have to be the guy screening out the losers.
[On a sidenote, that section did bring a little piece of unintended humor. In the instructions to readers, there's the rule, "Article must be fully edited with no typos...", which is soon followed up by the misspellings of 'plagarise' and 'plagarism' in the last rule.]
All in all, a promising start for the new mag.

Unfortunately for you and your insult, I typed in the misspellings as they can be found in the magazine. I'm well aware of the correct spellings, and I'm also well aware that I can also head to dictionary.com, if I was ever in doubt.

Just browsing thru and I like the Hardware section, and a couple of previews especially Prey, and Capcom classics collection. However it seems very thin. I noticed that the reviews/previews sections for the most part are limited to one page each and the mag itself is only around only 82 pages. Hope it gets better but appreciate the free mag.

You've hit on it nicely . . . its so cool to say that EGM sux.
I read all the game magazines and enjoy each one and get all I can from them.
Obviously the reviews are always a matter of opinion and will vary.
EGM is a shallow mag but also has broad coverage . . . Game Informer is the most fun and often has very good cover articles. They broke Vice City open in the summer of 2002 with a great 8 page spread.
If only my fave of all time Next Generation were still in publication . . . the writing was so intelligent.

I got this magazine today. Overall, it seems nicely done. I like the references that older gamers can get, like how it's sad that the NES Batman is still the best one. I also like how not every game is getting a 5 out of 5... COUGH IGN COUGH...
For the negatives, I really think a "hardcore codes" section is totally anachronistic. Sure, it was cool getting Nintendo Power and finding cheats for games 10 years ago, but now we have the internet. Also, the "hardcore strategy" part looks kind of out of place too.
Looking back now, the "bad" parts I mentioned seem to be a giant ad for prima guides. Don't know how true this is, but it makes sense, I guess.

Got mine, and it's an excellent read. The reviews are tightly written and informative, so even if you don't agree with the score you can at least learn about the game in question. I like how the news section is set up. Highly informative and up-to-date - perfect for those select few who either don't have an internet conection, or don't keep constant tabs on VG news. My favorite part of the mag is all the little things other nmags don't have. Things like "submissions" and an article about long lost games for yester-year really struck a cord with me.
About the only thing I didn't like were the stradegy and code sections, if you truly are speaking to the hardcore gamer, then these sections are un-needed, and waste space better used for more arcticles, reviews, etc, etc.
All in all, I haven't enjoyed a new mag this well since I first subscribed to GI back in 2001. They've really earned my respect and fandom, here's hoping they keep it :)

It's an ok read... I have a few nitpicks though.
- The previews are VERY short, would like to see them expanded on a bit.
- Why so many editors? Some of them didn't seem to have any articles at all. Expanding on this, in the box where they talk about themselves in the front, how come some are written in third page, while others are first person? It would flow better if they used one type of speaking universally.
- Sometimes the articles seem a bit disjointed... that Xbox Homebrew one really jumped around alot, it was a difficult read.
- That anime section has to go... I hate the stereotype attached to gamers that all of them must love anime. I felt the Gundam Seed anime review was a big waste of two pages, personally. If I wanted anime, I'd get a Newtype. Same with the cosplay =/
Some positives:
- That article on Namco X Capcom was very awesome - a page for imports is something very appreciated.
- Reviews are very well done, you can tell they are written from a gamer's POV.
- You seem awfully hard on some games... i'll list it as a positive since some magazines fluff up games TOO much.
And here's a side comment:
Why not like a suggested MSRP where you think the game would be worth buying? Let's say the MSRP is 49.99, you could mention how it's not worth 50, but maybe at 30 it would be definite pickup. You could put it right in the info bar with everything else. Say, for GTA, it would say MSRP: 49.99, We Suggest: Buy it ASAP
For something like Fantastic Four, it could be MSRP: 49.99 We Suggest: 19.99

It's constructive criticism, and I was not sure if DJPubba still viewed this thread. Is every free game a 10 / 10 with you? And it's not a sub, it's a six issue free trial. If it was a sub I'd get a year for free.
After five more issues, I would have to pay 24.99 for a sub, and at this point in time no way would I throw down 25 bucks. However, maybe some running changes will be made... DjPubba could see my criticism, and say "Hey I'm going to get right on fixing that, great idea".
Constructive criticism is better than 2000 posts all saying "wow, great job, thanks".

Got mine in the mail the other day...
Decent magazine, I like how they dont freely give 5's to games in the reviews section (no game recieved one, not even GTA:SA XB)
Like the unearthing of old classics we may have forgotten or had never played before, would like to see a little more coverage of that
The preview of the Capcom Classics Collection had me pumped about its release in September
I also like how the "smart-ass" factor is toned down here, as opposed to magazines like EGM (which I do like coverage wise, the amount of info per issue is why I subscribe, not the "fratboy" type mentality seem in viewer mail etc)
As far as other magazines go, hate... HATE gamepro... I do like tips and tricks, particularly the collectors closet

I couldn't agree with this post more. I'd also add that the cover story and news section were nice and informative, so I'd give each of those a positive. Also my main gripe is the previews seem really short, which is my favorite section in magazines so I was a little disappointed. I also they think should do away with the anime, cosplay sections. I want to read about games, not this junk. Get rid of those and liven up the previews a bit more.

i strongly agree on all of the highlighted text...especially the anime/cosplay and the suggested pick it up price....ive tried to watch anime and i just cant get into it...its too, i dunno...id rather not start a flame war on how i feel towards anime...but i definitely dont think it belongs in a gaming magazine...id rather you review new release dvds in general than an anime dvd here or there....but you're trying something new and that's cool...which brings me to the recipe section...i thought that was really cool and i plan on trying that one out....as for the suggested pick it up price that roufuss mentioned...ive always stressed that magazines need to have a section in their review where they give the game an additional rating depending on its price...example being that one game might not be a 9 out of a 10 for $50, but for $20 it is

Just got the 2nd free issue in yesterday. Like whoever said it, it definitely has an old school Gamefan vibe to it. Heavy pages with lots of colorful pictures and, thank Rebus, an artistic cover. The game magazine covers of late are total crap stock images given to magazines by publishers. Hardcore Gamer definitely feels like a game magazine made strictly by game enthusiasts.
And, I'll actually go against the grain and say leave the anime review in. But, leave it to one page. This is a game magazine, not an anime mag. If the powers that be like anime, let them throw it in, it's their show. But they'll just need to remember the core audience this mag is intended for.
Previews, I agree, are too short. For the really big games they can do bigger previews and then have some sort of smaller section with other ones with less information.
Otherwise, this is a pretty solid, fun mag to read. And this most recent issue is better than the Serious Sam (which I don't think I could give any less of a rat's bald ass about) one.

This second issue was ALOT better... they finally got rid of the anime and cosplay section, and instead gave us ANOTHER two pages of import reviews. That was definately awesome, those 4 pages of Japan were probably my favorite reads, because you just don't see that in other gaming magazines.
Good to see the Editor boxes were all in 1st person POV instead of that weird mix of 1st and 3rd person.
Awesome article on modding the Atari Flashback, and kudos on the informative Katamari cover story. It's stuff like this that makes it really feel like a hardcore gamer's magazine.
But one kind of minor nitpick... those strategy sections are really stupid. I mean, strats on Madden 2006, and last month it was Dragonball GT? Not to mention that they aren't really the greatest of strategy's, either. I know that Prima is probably throwing down a good bit of money to be able to do that, but cmon Pubba, you are the head of Double Jump Books, your guides wipe their floor with their shit any day of the week =/ If you are going to have some strategy sections, at least make Prima put some effort into it, that Wild Arms Alter Code F section was laughable at best.
Bah, who am I kidding, you probably don't read this thread anymore :p

The Atari Flashback 2.0 hack was the coolest thing I've ever seen in a videogame mag. I love projects like that and seeing how it is build step-by-step was very interesting...
