Ok, after spending a long time looking into puchasing the MICROSOFT XBOX High Definition AV Pack I decided to go to the store yesterday and pick one up.
Universally, I thought there was only one choice on this issue:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/highdefinitionavpack.htm

http://images.jr.com/productimages/XBXK0300007.PNG?CELL=175,175&QLT=67&FTR=7&CVT=jpeg

However, going into a large gaming chain and a major electronics store I was confronted with this HD AV Pack:

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801259

http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/lbox/801259b.jpg

Did the first HD AV Pack get replaced? The people in the stores looked at me like I had two heads.

Is anyone aware of a quality difference between the two? I want to be able to experience the best sound and picture which is why I want to be careful about the one I get.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes the first pack got replaced. On the old one you still had to buy the cables now you don't save for an optical audio one.

Uh, yes and no. Yes it got replaced, no you didnt have to buy any extra cables except for the optical (which is also the case for version 2.0)

I have had both the old and new, they are the same picture wise IMO. The difference is a straight run of cable vs. a box like unit built into the older one.

TRU has the old one for $5 - $10 if you can find it.

Gentlemen:

Thank you for that fast response. It was driving me nuts.

I am a little confused about the Digital Optical Cable (DOC).

Has its need been totally eliminated? Is the DOC included as part of the AV Pack?

Again, thanks. I spent alot of time on this and was majorly disappointed that I couldn't find it.

But now that I know, its not a big deal.

the optical cable is not included in the pack. You will need to purchase this seperately. I have the second edition of this av pack it's great.

Neither version comes with an optical cable included. Its a standard jack so any you have lying around will do.

I wonder if they have the same UPC #.

I think you may have misunderstood. The DOC is not included but it is definitely needed for better sound. If you have a sound sytem that supports Digital sound you will really want to get one.
