Anybody know how to rip the movies and music from PS1 games? I want to watch the videos for ChronoTrigger and FFVI since I've already played through those games. I searched on google and came up with some software but none of them seem to be working. I've tried PSXPlay, PSMPlay, and Playstation Movie Player but they just freeze up when I try opening one of those STR files.
Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks!

I would like to know too. I've tried some of that software and I could never get it to work.

This guy typed up his experiences on ripping the Spyro music:

He mentions the same programs as you but said he needed some .dll files and has links to them. Haven't tried it out to see if it'll work, but you've got me interested in this now. I'll definitely attempt this later...
EDIT: Just read through his page and the link for the .dll files is dead. I'll do a more thorough search tomorrow.

No luck. I installed the latest ASPI drivers but the programs still crash when I try opening the STR files...

If you look around, you'll see that all the PS1 games have already been ripped & you can download the music.
I got my music from zophar.net and listen to it while working.

Not all games, silly. What you're talking about there are PSF rips, and not all PS1 games used that format of music. There's also XA, Redbook (of course), and others.

Well... all the games I care about (like the final fantasies & chrono cross). And the website also includes classic N64 and SNES turns too.
Enlighten me about these other formats. Redbook? XA? Never 'eard of 'em.

Red Book is standard CD audio, i.e., audio tracks that you can play on a standard CD player. Many PS1 games use it for music.
XA is a digital audio format that the PS1 uses, kinda like MP3 and whatnot.

The music is not that important I guess since I have most of the ones I want. I mainly wanted to rip the videos so I could watch them without having to play those games.

This site has quite a few Playstation utilities (http://www.kemuland.com/kemulandst/playstationutilitiesst.php). One of which is an:
Excellent program to convert psx video files (.STR, .TIM) into windows video format (.AVI) and other ones (.STR,. XA)

About to try it out myself...

did anyone ever figure this out? I've spent hours trying to convert .str files from old Star Wars PSX games to no avail

I haven't had any luck... I even tried the Action Replay I had but it didn't work either.

Search for utilities called PSMPlay and PSXMc. That's exactly what you need. They will play almost every PSX movie format, and also almost every PSX streamed audio format (such as XA)
As for PSF music... PSF is merely a container for audio that has been ripped and shoved in that container. For sequenced music, it consists of a driver stub, a sequence file (like a MIDI) and a soundbank file (like a soundfont). Any PSX game that uses sequenced (MIDI) music as opposed to streamed (WAV) music can be ripped to PSF. It just takes a skilled programmer to create a driver stub that will play that game's audio.
Playstation 2 audio is exactly the same way... just with different formats, both sequenced and streamed. :)

if you get a plug mod for the psx and just rig it to your pcs input you could record like that much easier (plug mods let u play fmv and music files)

I tried this movie converter and it would not open/recognize the FF7 movies.
