Need help quick: Cell Phone Companies for West Coast

OK--I thought I would avoid another moving question, but I need help fast. The short story is that my partner, sweet as he is, dropped our cell phone in a glass of cola and now it is dead. It's out of warranty and I only have 30 days left on the contract--and don't want to do a new one because this is Alabama and I am moving to San Jose, California in 2 days.

So, I need help in two ways:

1) Advice on best cell carrier for California area (looking at nationwide plans for 1 or 2 phones--but we RARELY talk so the fewest minutes are fine) so that I can order online from Amazon and hopefully it will be there when we arrive next Friday.

and

2) Advice on the CHEAPEST pay as you go to buy a phone just for travelling cross-country this week.

You can try metro pcs. It's unlimited minutes for anywhere in U.S. and no day/night or roaming charges. However there cover area is only northern california. They cover San Jose for sure. There's no contract so you'll have to pay full price for the phone. It's around 45 bucks a month though. Other than that, there's your regular sprint and verizon.
