View Full Version : DVD-playback option - More rampant RevOlution Speculation

I have been wondering... Iwata said that there will be an internal DVD playback optional add-on for the RevOlution. Everyone says this is backwards thinking from a "forward thinking" company. But is it?

They have solved the lack of online and admitted this as a past fault of theirs. They haven't announced a positive yes or no on HD, which most take as a "no." But then their statements tell us we need not worry about image quality (I have no idea why - maybe they will have HD support, but just don't want to announce it? Who knows. But they claim that there will not be a problem there.) But the DVD playback announcement is one thing that cannot be reasoned away. Maybe there is a legitimate reason.

What if Nintendo is not only planning for the capability of watching DVDs on your RevOlution, but is planning for the future? A future where either HD-DVD, or even Blu-Ray becomes the standard. You see, it would be stupid for a company to bank on one or the other without knowing the outcome and without having a vested interest (as does Sony). Not only could the technology they implement go the way of the betamax or the mini disc, but they could alientate, isolate and screw over their consumers in the process. There is no way that Nintendo is going to include a drive that plays either or both formats, whlie charging the consumer an extra $100-$200. Much less chance if the format(s) is(are) not going to become standard. But what if they just play a waiting game and then let the consumer add a peripheral that plays the winning format (or both) and only costs them $50 extra?

I don't know. Just a thought. But there has to be something going on. Nintendo has made mistakes, like every company. But they are not stupid.

Nintendo already said that there are no plans for HD support on the system, so why include a HD DVD drive?

Of course they should add the oppisite of Sony just to pick a fight.

You are completely missing the point of my thread!
For one, they have not decided on HD. But they have not said it wouldn't be present. Also, it is not the HD, but the possible establishment of a standard. And "picking a fight" would only be detrimental. Sure, if BD went the way of beta, md and the dinosaurs, it would be fun for Nintendo to point and laugh at Sony. But if BD becomes the standard, and Nintendo had tried to "pick a fight," that wouldn't go in Nintendo's best interest.

The point is the possibility of them waiting for a cheaper solution and/or a standard. I just can't see Nintendo making the same type of mistake again. I think they are just waiting out the storm.

I'm pretty sure I saw an interview where someone said the Rev could play blue and red laser formats....

here it is

well like it says, it may be fake. Supposedly it was translated so I don't know. Take it with a grain of salt.
