View Full Version : Why isn't everybody on the Do Not Call Registry?

I just spoke to somebody who said she got calls from telemarketers. It's not only amazing some people are not on the registry, it's also a bit irresponsible since if everybody bothered to be put on the list, these sleazy companies would go out of business.

Do us all a favor - if you have a land line, call 1-888-382-1222 and get on the registry. Make everybody you know do it too. In fact, if you're at a friend's house, call from their phone. They'll thank you a few weeks later.

The only reason not to, I think, is if your time is worth even less than the telemarketer's time, and you like to string them along / prank them / etc. Which is perfectly acceptable, of course, if that's your thing.

I told my friend this yesterday as well. I did not know the number by heart so thanks for posting it. I will let him know.

We're on the Do Not Call list. I'd say I've noticed the difference. Of course, I wonder how much longer that might be.

Yes, well, the constitution's also under attack - but it's sort of holding up for now.

Or for people you don't like.

Because I believe the do-not-call list is wrong due to the fact that political organizations and non-profit organizations are exempted from the do-not-call list put together with the fact that I believe since telemarketing does not infringe on anyone's right or cause anyone a possible threat of bodily, mental or monetary harm.. it should not be legal for the government to exclude a large portion of people from their right to income. And since I do not believe it should be legal, I do not want my name on the list.

It's fun to mess with those guys that call you. Once I was at one of my friend's grandma's house playing D&D, and a telemarketer called. Someone took the phone and yelled "There pulling out my eyeballs!" The telemarketer said "That's nice sir" and we hung up on him.

You're quite the odd little beastie, if you don't mind me saying so.

Yes, it is wrong that some organizations are exempted.

However:
Telemarketing is morally wrong. And there is no "right to income" - especially not for commercial entities. A company that is unable to turn a profit should go under. Telemarketers use up your time, tie up your phone line, and bother you - with no benefit to you whatsoever (if I'm interested in a product or service, I can find it myself, thank you very much).

Do you also disagree with laws forbidding them to call in the middle of the night? Or from using predictive dialers - you know, ones that may call you then hang up because their computer system thought they might have somebody available to talk to you by the time you picked up, but there wasn't? Would you be fine with the same company calling every day? How about just every week? Is spam fine? It doesn't physically harm you either. I could go on...

There is no right to income, you are correct.. however I'm using a common paraphrasing of the inherent right to pursue an income uninhibited as long it does not infringe on the rights of another entity. Telemarketing is not "morally wrong" in any way, shape or form.

Quite honestly, its been said over and over the law is unconsitituional (do to banning for-profit organizations only).. it will probably be overturned within a year or so.

The phrase "odd little beastie" wins the no-prize for today.

Its sad, but you're probably right. I propose that they add non-profit groups and political groups to the list. Make everyone unable to call.

I'm on the list and I love it. I've also opted out of receiving credit card offers in the mail.....a lot less crap there. Now, if they only mad spam email illegal too, life would be a lot better.

Here is the webpage: https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

I just registered, even though I was under the impression I had already done so a year or so ago...We get way too many calls (and faxes) that waste our time. How many people enjoy getting calls for mortgages or to change their phone service while in the middle of a Battlefield 2 match? ;)

For those people who are on the Do Not Call List, approximately how many telemarketing calls are you still getting after being on the list?

I'm on the DNC list and I still get a few calls each day. :(

We just moved 7 months ago, and got a new number...so take that into consideration. We're on the list and get less than 1-2 calls/month. Since our number isn't out there as much, I'm sure that is part of it, but it really works.

Well it doesn't stop all calls. If you sign up for something like a magazine, newspaper, credit card, etc. they are still allowed to call you. Same goes for any company you have a business relationship with. Also surveyors, charities, and policital organizations are still allowed to call you as well.

Edit: Also there's a 31 day period where those covered by the list can still call you after you sign up. So if it was recently that could be why as well.

The national one, I hope? Not one of those funky state lists?

I have no idea what to do in those cases, but I think any company that calls you can be fined / sued.

I have noticed a difference. I get a lot less. I still get the occasional call from someone I do business with. So I am all for it.

I signed up on the web site https://www.donotcall.gov/ last year. I did notice reduction in the calls. But I'm still get several calls each day. And the callers are not people I have done business in the past either. Kinda annoying, but I use my answering machine and caller id to filter the calls so it's not as bad.

I just verify on the https://www.donotcall.gov/ that I'm on the Do Not Call list since March 2004.

I never pick up my home phone. Telemarketers can call me all day if they wanted. My friends only call my cell and plus they don't even have my home number.
