Okay, we all know not to buy a used PS2 because the hardware is junk to begin with (I am a PS2 gamer BTW).
But, I have been eyeing used GCs pretty hard... do u think they are any good, or are they prone to failure?

any piece of electronics is prone to failure, but from my own experience, nintendo makes products for the longterm. Each of their systems, from the nes on to the cube have never given me problems and continue working to this day.
The only thing I would worry about with a used cube is that newer ones no longer have the progressive video output- tho this may be a nonissue for you.

The cubes are built tough. I've seen them beat from Hell to back and keep going, and going, and going...

I saw a show on tech TV where they droped from 2 stores and took a hammer to NGC, PS2 and XBOX and the NGC was the only one to work after all that.

It should work great. Nintendo has a reputation for building quality, extra-durable hardware.
You could always look for a refurbished one too, I think.
