View Full Version : Revolution Controller to use OLED technology?

I posted this in a couple threads, but thought it may be worthy of its own.

I got to thinking about the Optimus keyboard ( http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/ )from another post and any other applications that this technology can be used for and thought of one, Nintendo Revolution. Anyone think this may be something Nintendo will be using on their new controller? Maybe a series of buttons on the controller and only the ones used for the particular game light up... When playing NES games for instance, the 2 gameplay buttons light up red to look like the NES contoller buttons. Or a game like Pikmin, which Myamoto just said would be perfect for the Revolution controller interface... Maybe the buttons light up to match the color of the Pikmin on screen. You can then select your Pikmin by using their given button on the controller... Remember all the talk of a screen on the controller? Maybe...maybe not, but just a thought...

Any comments or theories of your own?

I read somewhere that when Mario needs to jump, the button would show that...
It's interesting and isn't impossible - and with all these rumors going round it would be one hell of a controller.
OLED, yeah that's the term that was used!

That's actually a good idea and sounds like a very Nintendo-like controller innovation. Could be close to the truth, who knows.

Wouldn't this add unnecessary cost to the system? Nintendo seems intent on delivering the console at a very low price.

I'm not sure why that would be a good thing? It would be expensive, you would need to look at the controller to know what to do? I mean it would be a nice novelty, but really unnecessary.

Actually, OLED is cheap to manufacture.

And it has already been introduced into the market by the Network Walkman, so it is no longer an unknown technology to consumers.

Of course, it is highly unlikely that it will be used in a controller. I remeber wishing that the GBA would use it (Nintendo actually ordered 200 OLED screens while developing the GBA, presumeably for test purposes).

OLED are expensive. wtf you smoking. if it was so cheap to manafacture, why dont we see 26" OLED screens? LCD screens are cheap, OLED screens are still expensive. so please, making a dinky 1 to 2 inch OLED screen might be some pennies more, but don't extrapolate from that premise.

i seriously doubt an OLED screen will make its way to the controller. that is not a revolutionary technology.

Nintendo thinks we're stupid? That's the big Revolution?!

All jokes aside, it's an interesting concept.. but revolutionary? No.

Isn't this sort of like the old Atari games with the little paper that you put on the controller that had all the controlls mapped out on it? Except, ya' know, no paper.

Either way, I say no because of cost. Cool idea but it would still add too much cost to the controller. OLED rocks and all but I don't think it will be embraced more until the cost goes down.

It is expensive to liscense because it is a relatively new technology, buy it is far from expensive to manufacture.
