View Full Version : Does Yu-Gi-Oh have rules?

Pokemon got me back into cartoons. After a long week it's relaxing, with simple humor and simple plots. The good guys are good, bad guys are bad, usually not a lot of grey and you can just relax and enjoy without thinking too much about it. It reminds me a lot of my "golden" era of cartoons - Transformers, Duck Tales, GI Joe, Thundercats, Gummi Bears, etc.
Pokemon somehow got me sucked into the Yu-Gi -Oh series (though I don't really know why, it's a little over-dramatic for a cartoon).
What I'm wondering is - do the card battles they have in the show have any rules at all? It seems like they just make it up as they go along. You know, like when you're a kid and your sister says "My room has special carpet. If boys walk on it they will get stupid and turn green" and then you come back with "Yeah? Well these are special shoes I'm wearing...and if I wear them on your carpet it has the opposite effect and makes YOU stupid and turn green." And then the sister returns fire with "But I'm wearing the pink princess dress, and that means my carpet can never be mean to me."
--It seems like they're making up the rules on the fly "My Egyptian card allows me to attack 4 times in a row" (Oh no!)
--"Yes, but you didn't count on my trap card, which multiplies the number of monsters in my graveyard by 24 and causes them all to attack you every time you use your Egyptian card (opponent is irritated).
--"I anticipated that move, which is why I didn't tell you about my Flaming Blue Antlers card, which allows me to negate any one of your trap cards."
--"I am surprised, but what you neglected to educate yourself about is the fact that the Flaming Blue Antlers card was created 3,000 years ago on a Saturday, and therefore will not work on a Sunday. It is now 12:01 a.m. on my side of the line (looks down at the time-zone marker between Eastern and Central time zones between them) and your card is useless!"
I guess that's a long way around asking if there are any rules to the game they're playing in the show, if it has anything to do with the real game, and if the cards they use in the show exist in real life. Are there actual Yu-Gi-Oh cards out there that they only made 1 or 2 of with special attacks, etc? (clearly I know nothing about Yu-Gi-Oh other than the TV show)

the cards in the show are based on/created from real cards. that way, kids can watch the show and learn different stratgies.

As strange as it may seem, yes! Yu Gi Oh has rules. I may not have read them, nor do I really plan to (for fear of getting sucked into buying the damn cards). It's actually a pretty simple game that similar to Magic, or so I am told. It's just that the anime makes it look really difficult, and that only the smartest people with the best built decks can win tourneys.
I read a post somehweres on my pokemon forum (in the OTHER card games threads) That someone went to mexico and that some kid was boasting about his deck being undefeatable. Needless to say, the tourist kicked his ass, and the kid ran off and left his deck. What did he/she find? A deck full of nothing but Blue Eyes White Dragons and Dark Magicians, and maybe some other fillers. Cheater much?
EDIT: What Shakespear said, too. :3
Also, Beware of buying the Egyptian God Cards online! I read in a magazine that many kids and their gullible parents were ripped off with fakes.

I wouldn't call it a simple game. Definitely not. Yes, the actual card game has rules, lots of them. But if you learn the rules and invest in the cards (or believe in the cards  ), then you'll find it worth it. I've tried about eight different card games and this one is the most fun. But, unfortunately, I don't play it anymore. My cards got stolen too many times and I just stopped. I honestly had the most rare and powerful cards in the game. Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon (is that what you call it?), all three Egyption God cards (English versions), and many more. After my deck got stolen, I just gave up.

The egyptian god cards aren't even tournament legal so they aren't much of a wise investment.
Before the Battle City episodes of Yu-gi-oh, the anime really did not go by the majority of the rules of the real card game. Battle City and on go exactly by them, however (minus the egyptian god cards).

Japanese, Asian-English and Counterfeit cards are not legal for use in Official Tournaments. The English print God cards are also not legal for tournament play.

Yeah, the rules to Yu-Gi-Oh are a little more complex than Pokemon, and the YGO show makes the games out to be even more complex. There can be a lot of face down cards on the field, so that's why you see so many counters.

You know, that's bull. I've built decks for my kid brother to use constructed out of nothing but commons and some of the easy to get rares (black hole, Reborn the Monster, etc).. I've built decks for him that cost less than ONE card in most of his friends decks, and he stops a mudhole in them just about every single time.
It's just like Magic the Gathering and Pokemon... it's all about the metagame. Heart of the Cards my ass. It's Statistics and Probability that dictate success and failure.

How about you not post here since you lied about your age to post here anyway?
I'm not about to take advice on proper behavior from a 12 year old.

I believe the cartoon has no rules that are set in stone since it was created before the card game. So in the cartoon you will see a lot of things that have nothing to do with the card game.

Thanks man, that's exactly what I was wondering. So they actually do follow the rules on the show. That will definitely help me to appreciate the show more in the future. There have been several times that I have been tempted to lose interest just because it appeared that the show's writers were making up rules in order to make it easier for them to write out the script how they wanted it.

Dude, you crack me up. I can't dislike you because all of your posts are so well-reasoned but man, you are one crabby old man. Do you have a porch and a rocking chair? I picture you rocking on a porch and eyeing kids in your neighborhood, lest their ball take an unfortunate bounce into your yard - then they stand around and try to decide whether or not retrieving their ball is worth the verbal assault they will encounter for letting their ball go on your property.
Do you have a cane? You would need one of those too to make noise with and poke the kids with when they come to get their ball.
"Hey, I'm here to get my ball".
"Is this your property?" *pokes kid on the shoulder with cane*
"No"
"Well, *thrusts cain against the ground a la Gandolf in the 'None Shall Pass' scene of Fellowship* possession is 9/10ths ownership"
"But it's my ball, can I have it back?" *runs towards ball*
"Now you're tresspassing! *Follows behind, poking kid in the side as he picks up his ball* You're in trouble now!"
--kid manages to grab ball and runs back down the street--
"I know where you live!" *Waving Cane in the air*

You know a friend and I had this very discussion the other day, I already was aware that the game had rules but man, watching the show it seems like everybody dueling is pulling this stuff out of their ass. Personally I like it like that, adds a bit of surprise.

I am going to go with red flare graf's assessment that they actually do play by the rules in the show unless somebody states for a fact that they don't (and I don't mean they break some obscure rule from time to time, I mean in general).

Yep.

Nope, I would never do that. Of course, if on some occassion (family dinner, etc) a kid came over to the adult table and started talking trash, I'd be the first to apply a verbal thrashing to them.
Do you have a cane? You would need one of those too to make noise with and poke the kids with when they come to get their ball.
Nope, no cane. I do have a shotgun, though.

Nope, I would never do that. I have great respect for children, as they do everything deliberately. They don't try to bend rules to make themselves look like they are right.. they either do it because it is right, because they don't know it is wrong, or because they know it is wrong but they just don't care... they don't split hairs and try to put together justification.
For some reason, this attribute seems to get beat out of people as they grow.
Of course, I was a little harsh in the first post that made him lash out at me... but it's a pet peeve of mine that all of these kiddies that play card games talk about how they have to spend so much money on the cards to do well at all... (hence my mentioning of common decks, etc).
He then lashed out at me, and I responded in kind. If it had been a new user, or someone who hasn't entrenched themselves here, I would have given them a bye and just let it slide.

Wait, are you retarded? You just admitted you were harsh and lasthed out at me and I lashed out at you. Then you still think that you should "put me in my place". Yeah, I know, most ppl who play cards talk alot about how they spent so much money on their cards, etc. But I know you've seen ppl on here talk about how much money they've spent on their game collections. It's a given, if someone spends enough money into something, I think they atleast have the right to talk about how much that was. Oh, when you said you'd give a verbal thrashing to a kid if he started talking trash at a dinner of adults, you weren't referring to me, were you?
