EB to stop Refurbing GCs

gc are the easiest console to fix on your own by far...dre's especially...and since that is by far and away the most common problem...

cag doesn't mean lazy too...fix one yourself....www.gamefaqs.com has an easy tutorial

I have a Refurbished one from GS. It hasn't completley died yet, but gives me DRE's here and there. Also it came with a Platinum controller which I was happy with.

My EB tests all systems that come into the store. Ones traded in and ones that come from their corporate office. GC's seem to have the fewest problems of any of the big 3 systems. From my experience, the GC is the most durable system of the 3. Ticking timebomb?? I dont think so. Just because you had a bad experience with one, doesnt mean everyone else has.

I've never bought a refurbed GC from EB, but when I tried to buy a refurbed XBOX I went through all 6 they had in stock (all crapped out) and they had to give me refund.

EDIT: BTW, I have never had a problem with my or my brother's GC. And my PS2 died after 2 years (but luckily Sony offers free replacements).

Either another price drop is coming or there isn't enough of a price difference between fixing and getting new.

This is why major appliance repair shops aren't around any more. Back in the day, you'd take a toaster in for repairs, now, you just go get a new one.

Got a refurb from nintendo when my original gamecube said bye-bye (still under warranty :) ) i have had that since 2002, and only once have I had a DRE.

i just got a refurb gamecube from GS and i haven't had any problems lately...it's a black one and it has a black controller and i love it. i don't know why they're doing that though. maybe they might start selling Panosonic Qs in stores for like 60 dollars ect

With the exception of perhaps the original NES (the "second edition" NES was much better), Nintendo makes the most reliable, durable hardware out there. Most of the PS2 owners I know have had to have their PS2 either repaired or replaced since getting it. That's simply inexcusable. My Cube, on the other hand, has been without a problem going on three years now.

My launch GC died a few months ago. I tried the gamefaqs potentiometer adjustment thing...that kinda worked. But I kept having to re-adjust it.

For $50 bucks you can send your GC to Nintendo and have it repaired - and that includes shipping! It takes about a week for the entire process. Very reasonable IMO.

Note I had it repaired because I want to use the Digital Video out that doesn't exist on the new GC. I even bought a new GC with the intention of stripping out the dvd player and replacing it in my old one - but they changed the hardware so it doesn't "fit" in the old system. Yes, I'm a very naughty boy since I was then going to return the "broken" new system.

Yeah I think you guys are right, I haven't heard on my gamecubes breaking, so there many not be much demand for referbs. I personal have had 3 different xbox's and they have all in one way other the other died on me.

While reading this I remembered about my friend saying something like he saw this video on the internet one time where these crazy college guys went and bought like 3 units of each system (xbox,ps2,gamecube) and just did some crazy crap to them. Beat them with a bat, cooked em in and oven and dropped them from a roof. The gamecube beat all the other systems hands down, he said it even worked after they dropped it from the roof, haha. I know that doesn't have much to do with normal day to day playing but I thought it was funny. I'll have to see if he still has the video on his computer.

Bought a PS2 from a friend that wouldn't read the blue bottom disks and had it repaired by sony for free. Another year and a half and it did it again so I got it repaired for free by them again. Also, by this time, I had gotten a slim line PS2 as well.

My xbox has never had a problem, both of them anyways. I have a xbox from 1 year after release, and a halo edition xbox and haven't had a problem. My friend's xbox died on him cause of the power supply burning out. I ended up fixing it and adding changing/adding some items to it to make a better system out of it and it's going strong now as well. I'm also in the process of trying to fix another xbox that is having power problems as well. I just need to find my screwdrivers.

I have a launch GC and I've only had one DRE.
Nintendo products are great. You don't have to worry about the quality of the hardware.

Our Gamecube lasted longer than the POS launch PS2, that's for sure. But it still broke. We can sometimes play a game for a couple of hours with no problems, but most of the time it gets a DRE in under a minute of play.

I'm taking it to the local gamestore for repair, he has a HS senior that does hardware repairs for him now (the owner is like 60 and says his repair skills aren't so hot on the new systems). $20, or $40 if it needs a new laser. :D :D

Still, all of our next-gen consoles broke. Dreamcast bit the dust after not too much use (although it was old). Our first PS2 was a typical POS with the DREs about 2 years into its lifespan. Gamecube was bought 6mo after release and just started having problems a few months ago. My Xbox was bought from a used gamestore in January, it has a replacement Thompson II drive in it.

Considering how nice I am to the consoles, I was surprised how high the failure rate seems to be on optical drives this generation.
