I'm just wondering which component of a notebook uses the most battery power: processor, display (sat at medium brightness), disc drive, processor, HDD, or something else?

Optical drive if it's constantly spinning, like if you're listening to a CD or watching a DVD. (Hard drive's spinning is also a decent drain.) Or your processor -slash- graphics card if you're running processor intensive applications, like 3D games or audio/video encoding. Outside of that, I'd also wager your wireless networking card might also make a good hit on battery life, especially if you're not getting a perfect signal and it has to struggle to keep in contact.

Display, eh? Damn...

I was asking because when my notebook is running on battery power, the notebook goes to the dimmest brightness. I like my screen to be its bightest but I can see that that's why the battery's not performing very well- around 2 hours with word processor and iTunes in the background.

My guess would be the display, follow by any drives that are spinning (HD and CD/DVD drives).
