I think my housemate has this (or an earlier verison of this). I think he got it free when he was helping out some chess master doing a website or something. Didn't know they sell for so much.

The regular editions sell for a lot less. If I'm a hardcore chess player, I would buy this version, just like how I bought my HL2 CE for $70 :)

You have to realize - chess players typically only care about one thing in a program (unless the usability's really bad): How good the computer player is (measured by its ELO rating). That's it. So there's a market for quality here.
That's why it's funny to see, say, gameboy chess games. These never have an ELO rating on the packaging, and for good reason - they're weak. So they're bought mostly by parents to hope their kids pick up chess, but never by anybody who's serious about the hobby.

Deep Fritz 8 is a beast, dont know if my ego could take being trounced over and over again. It's the same engine that tied Shredder 7 in the World Computer Chess Championship and tied Kasparov in their match.

Oh, and if you're looking for chess software, you could give GNU chess a try - it's free (of course, being a GNU project).

And to play online for free,

(and many other places, of course)

It's still there! GO! :)
Impressive though...I think I'll just stick to my cheesy "BattleChess" or something like that though. I might have a chance of actually beating the computer then...

Nifty!
Chessmaster or Battle Chess on Novice always used to own me back in the day. I'm sure this would own me even worse :D

By a combination of minimax,

alpha-beta pruning,

and of course a good evaluation function.

Deep junior & Deep Fritz are about even.
Kasparov has left chess
FIDE is still a mess
And there still NO real world Champion (less you count Rustam Kasimdzhanov who won the FIDE world Championship last year ).
FIDE messed up big time in the 90's and now still got problems
