My godparents gave me a $50 gift certificate to a local mall. I really don't have anyplace better to spend it other than GameStop, so I figure I might as well pick up some games for my spankin' new computer!
Just throw some good games out there. I don't really want to drop $40 for a new game, so a few lesser-expensive-but-still good titles will work.
I'm thinking about getting Morrowind: GotY Edition. I think that runs at $20...
Rome: Total War looks awesome, but maybe too expensive?
I don't want Half-Life 2 or Doom 3. I don't like first-person shooters that have that theme to them. I prefer games like Call of Duty (which I have) and Medal of Honor.
Real-time strategies are very cool. I loved Diablo 1 and 2 a few years ago, but they grew old and stale.. it's too repetitive. I really like being able to make towns, especially really detailed ones. I saw a game by the name of "Imperial _____" that looked pretty sweet? How is Swat 3? Or would it be worth waiting till Swat 4 drops down in price?
Just throw some suggestions out there!

"That have that theme"? What theme are you talking about?
You'd love Battlefield 2. It's $49.99, but it feels like a steal for that price.

Never!
Regarding Swat 3: So far, it still stands the test of time. It's worth the purchase. I can't say much for Swat 4 because I couldn't run it well, but it was awesome as well.

The "theme" of Half-Life and Doom being the "alien" theme or whatnot. I like "real" soldiers and "real" guns, not gravity weapons and large ass-kicking aliens. Just not my thing!
What about the first Battlefield? I saw that for $10 at Wal-Mart..And are the Battlefield games mostly multiplayer, or do they have good single-player campaigns, too?

well you can play counter strike source if you get half life 2. far cry is pretty good. If you've never played a MMORPG try guild wars since it's free(to play online)

I guess you can tell that you haven't played Half-Life 2 before trying to judge it. I can only think of a few "alien" creatures in HL2, the rest are zombies and real soldiers.. and good work at basing all weapons in the game around one.. did you bother to research HL2 before making a judgment, or do you base all sequels on the first game?

Themes don't tend to change much in the game from original to sequel. Even still, you make it sound like it has many zombies, which is along the same lines to him, since he wants a realistic FPS.
And I wouldn't bother with BF1942, especially if you have Call of Duty.

Get the original Half-Life:GOTY edition which will be like $20-$25, and then go to www.steampowered.com download steam, and download counter-strike. The original counter-strike isa free add on mod to the original Half-life, and what a game it is. I have been playing since 1998 off and on. Yes its old but the graphics aren't that bad at all, they are playable. And the gameplay is amazing. Terrorist vs. Counter-terrorists. You play either defusing the terrorist bomb, rescue the hostages, and escort the president. All online multiplayer. Great game for under $30.

Rome Total War is really really good. Its less "build a huge city" than "use thousands of soldiers to storm ancient Europe". As far as more mainstream RTSes go, Rise of Nations, Command and Conquer Generals, and Warcraft 3 seem to be the mainstream hits. I don't think you could really go wrong with any of the three (I have all of them :)).
As far as Half Life 2: you're really missing out on something if you don't play it. Sure its bending things a little into the sci fi realm but its mostly very realistic. HL2 is a game that really knows how to tell a story.
Other than that, check out http://pc.ign.com/choice/ . Sure IGN isn't the *best* place to get game info from but that list will generally be the stuff you'll want to give some attention to. From there maybe head to GameRankings and read a couple reviews.
Much luck! Tell us what you decide on getting!
