What sort of time investment am I looking at if I want to play through Earthbound? And is it linear, or are there lots of sidequests? Thanks in advance for answering some n00b questions.

Its a really fun Easy RPG game. I enjoyed it when I was younger and I say its worth a play through. The story was pretty cool. About 25 -40 ( cant remeber) hours of gamepley. Awesome game.

Hmm...It's been a while, but I'm gonna say:
20 - 30 hours depending on your RPG skills (Not that it is hard, but people always say Final Fantasies take a long time)
It's pretty linear, but there are sidequests if I remember correctly. Not as many as most modern RPG's, but comparable to say Final Fantasy 6.
But it's a great game. Any RPG that came with scratch and sniff cards, and features trout-flavored yogurt is a must play in my book.

I'm 30 minutes in and I have to say that the tongue-in-cheek style already has me hooked. I really like that it doesn't take itself seriously. Thanks for the quick responses; now I know what to tell my girlfriend when she asks how much of my time it is going to eat up.

I actually don't remember any side-quests in the game, though there are plenty of opportunities to get rare items (yay for 1/255 chance of getting the Sword of Kings from a Super Star Man).
Overall it's a classic game that's easily worth at least one play through. This is also one of the few games (like Lunar) where they make it fun to talk to every person in a town, so be sure to take advantage of it. Also, piece of advice, take your time after you beat the game, there's lots of fun stuff to see if you look around for it. :D

Yeah the game is really fun, I wish there were more RPGs that put you in a current day neighborhood. Talking to people is really cute, I was laughing the first time I called dad from the phone at home to save.

I thought there were a few.. can't name specifics since we got a newbie playing it :P
It's a great game. Later on, you can add stuff to food (as in add ketchup to them or other ingredients).. depending on whether or not it "tastes good", your health could double or triple..
and this game has one awesome soundtrack, I love listening to it!

On the contrary! If you can spare the cash, DO give it to Orange kid first and use the item he gives you. It's good for a laugh.
