Ok,

I have searched here. I have read mixed things.

I am getting my first MP3 player this weekend. I wont have access to the net so I dont want to waste my time and come monday find out I need to do it all again.

So if I want WMA files will Windows Media Player automatically do that for me? Os is Winamp or some other such program recommended?

I want WMA as it is supposedly close to cd quality with the obvious space savings..

Currently I am going to burn songs from my CD's.

If you have a CD Windows Media Player will rip the disc to WMA. If you have regular mp3s that you want to convert I'm not sure, but I'll check.

It does also convert mp3s to WMA, also make sure your MP3 player support WMA files.

Thanks i am not at my computer and I couldnt check.

With MP3's there are optional kbps or whatever. Is it the same with WMA or is it only one bit rate?

Windows media player didn't allow me to change the frequency but I could be wrong. A great conversion free program is dbpoweramp music converter found here

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

You can use it to convert and rip, I use it to make ringtones.

Well, I haven't upgraded mine since forever, but [my] windows media player will encode wma from 48-192kbps.

Well, you'll have to find that out on your own. Take several songs and encode them at all possible bitrates, then listen to the wmas from the highest bitrate on down for each song and determine where the quality cut-off point is for you. Make sure you're listening to them in the conditions you'll be using the portable in, (i.e. headphones if that's how you're going to mainly use it.)

Yaeh, I've heard of that program as being a great conversion tool. I have question though, can it convert .ra (real player ugh) files to mp3s? Also, this may sound stupid, but can it be used inconjuction to CDex?
