View Full Version : The CAG Forums: Your thoughts?
CheapyD

I'm thinking about losing the "CheapyD's Game Club" forums and adding an Auctions forum as discussed here (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13847). People can post links to their own auctions or other auctions they come across that they feel may be of interest to other CAGs.
If I decide to add an Auction's forum, those posts will not appear on the front page's Latest Message Board Posts.
I was also thinking about adding a single "DVD Deals and TV/Movie Disccusion" forum?
Any comments, suggestions, ideas?

I like the DVD deals part. It would keep me from having to go over to dvdtalk.com

i like those ideas, but it kind of strays from the "cheap video game" theme. doesn't matter to me though b/c i visit this site the most and being able to get deals on everything else would be great too :D keep up the good work.

I love talking about anything and everything with my fellow CAG's...
I trust the judgement of the Big CheapyD as well...

I think the DVD deals would be a great addition to a already kickass website !

All good ideas. I think there should be restrictions to the auctions board (like you must be a registered CAGer for at least 2 months with 100 posts...) And I approve of a DVD section as well.

I'd like to see mods come down harder on people discussing/planning/bragging about scams. It generally ends up in a flame war and in the end only makes things hard on legit consumers.

Funny, I was just talking about how my dvd collection needs a little help. I think it's a great idea.

I think a minimum post count for not only the auctions forums but also the trades forums would be in order.
oh and one rather obvious and simple rule for an auctions forums is that if you are gonna post your own multiple auctions that you must do so in ONE thread....that will cut down tremendously on spam

i dunno about that, ive traded with n00bs 2 or 3 times, and big dirty traded with me when i had like 4 posts...while i see your points, i think its up to the individual people to police themselves. if they're new and have no feedback, make them send first! send yours insured with delivery. use common sence and a little initiative if you have more feedback.

I understand why you would want that, but I think the best defense for that is if you see a topic dealing with scams, simply ignore it. I see too many times where an "offending" topic is posted and everyone feels the need to "sound off" about it. It not really logical because the topic serves as a warning and there is no need to go into that topic once someone is warned.
I am not accusing you of anything ElwoodCuse, I am just making a general statement.

I think the minimum post count (or registration date) requirement will help newbies from flooding the forum. For me, it's more about that than the trust factor.

i agree. for instance joeboo has very little posts but has one of the higher feedback ratings here. but i dont think this was the point of this thread.
so yeah ill say again: yes to dvd forum
no to auction forum
you should probably add a poll to this one cheapy.

The Game Club has been neglected by just about everyone and should probebly go.
The TV/DVD forum is a great idea. My first thought was that it may be trying to cover too much in one forum, but we'll have to see about that.
An auctions forum sounds ok. Maybe just a simple 10 post count along with a 2 month register wait would be good to keep out the spam. The low post count will keep spam to get into it at a minimum, but will still allow people that have been here a while access to it. Same can be applied to the Trading Forum.

Agree with punqsux. A lurker newbie is trading me a ton of good Saturn imports (sorry if he feels bad to be called that, but expressing my point). A post count or time on boards requirement would be pointless. I know if someone would not have taken a chance and traded with a newbie over at their boards, I would be lacking the great deal I got on the real bout and KOF collections I have

Instead of a dvd forum, what about an All Other Deals Forum? I like the idea of an auction forum.

- The gameclub has been neglected cause Cheapy doesn't make new topics there anymore. You can't expect people to keep talking about month old topics forever. If it is going to be deleted it should be replaced with a 'portable gaming board'. There is no true GBA, psp board and there should be!
- I think a board where people constantly try to sell you their stuff is a bad idea. The more I think about it the more I see the negative outweighing the positive.
Pros
- Get to discuss auctions
- Get to reach more people with the item you are selling
Cons
- Spam
- Flame wars
- Emergence of con artists
- Many complaint threads/posts
- Auction threads spilling into other boards and discussions
- Mods won't/can't police it properly
- I think a dvd deal board is good, but I also think that it may be pretty empty. Right now there aren't a whole lot of dvd deals in the non-deals board so what makes you think that the dvd deal board is gonna fill up with deals? I also think that deal boards shouldn't be mixed with non deal boards so don't make a dvd deal and tv discussion board. The discussion will only push down the deals people want to see and defeats the purpose of posting a deal in the first place.

since were on the topic of dvds and all, how about a movie review board, or at least a sticky in game reviews? some people are already posting revies in off-topic, having a dedicated place for them could be helpful.

I thought we were trying to ELIMINATE the stupid "lol" and other pointless posts, not encourage them. :D
I'm with max on this one...a post limit on ANY part of the site will just make more spam. Leaving it up to the users to judge who they should trade with via post count and other elements is probably the best method.

I like the dvd movies boards. I am really aginst the auction one however. I am allways selling on ebay. I think if people wanted to help out their other cagers they would. A auction is to try and get the most out of an Item. I just think it would create more probs then the trouble. If i wanted to see some auctions I would go to ebay. I come here to find deals without bidding. The negitve out ways the positive in this one. Yes its a great way to increase your items views but I think it bring lots of people to start bad topics/ flame wars / and trouble between memebrs here.

i dont know if the auctions thread is such a good idea, people will just post their auctions which doesn't really have to b a good deal since auctions always go up to the usual prices. the only good thing i'd see about this would b posting auctions which are going for extremely low prices at the last moments....but even then people probally wont have time to react.

Well, I was supposed to keep the Game Club going, but it kinda became a bit of a hassle.
Just a DVD Board would be quite empty, and thats why TV and Movies can also be discussed there, in a manner the same as the Off-Topic forum, I believe.

Auctions forum, good. Specific Non-Gaming forum, bad. Stay true to the gaming roots and keep those discussions in OT. My 2 cents.

I think people would post some DVD deals if there was an exact forum for it instead of just the non-gaming forum. It would at least attract more attention.

i dunno about either of these ideas, i mean how would the auction board differ from the trading board? how would it be moderated? hwow would it even work?
the dvd board, really dosent appeal to me, because im not a big movie nerd, well, not current movies anyways. if this site incorporated dvds i would prolly become the new denisdfat. i know alot of people seem to be for this, but im not. but its your site, and im confident youll do whats best for it.
btw, banning MWL will help the forums more than ANYTHING!
p.s. axe the game club

if everyone is against auction posts then why do auctions on ebay get posted in the hot deals thread? If you go to atariage.com and check out their auction forums its excellent topics and discussions...I was extremely impressed by it
The site wont go to shit overnight just because a couple new forums are started...if there are problems or it turns out bad then it can be killed...but how you would feel if CheapyD deleted the trading forums because of CloudSpekk? Or the off-topic forums over MWL? Users are the problem as individuals...moderation is the key and I believe cheapy is working on some rules before starting the new forums
I really like the idea of the separate DVD deal forum. I would also like to make a suggestion about forum views. I read all the forums, and would find one master view really useful (I know, I started a separate topic on this, but no replies). For example:
View unanswered posts You last visited on Mon May 03, 2004 10:31 pm
View posts since last visit (240)
View your posts
View all posts
While I can see all posts since my last visit, if I leave the site and come back, I lose that history.

umm...you do realize that VIEW ALL POSTS would include 150,000 posts...
the view since last visit just checks the timestamp from your last visit and will display all posts current..
how would you propose "view all posts" would work?

Exactly. I can't judge something that doesn't exist and may never exist. To say an idea will be great based on things that haven't been implemented let alone tested is premature and unwise. And just cause something works great for one site doesn't mean it will work great everywhere.
This isn't a big deal, but don't expect things to work perfectly because new rules are in the works which a handful of people know about.

The nice thing is if new forums don't work, we can just get rid of them.
