What is the deal with this game? Is it as much like a card game as I'm imagining?

Are there RPG elements? I'm not a fan of card games but everyone keeps raving about this one so I'm starting to feel compelled to try it out.

theres a story thats told in an rpg form, i.e. cutscenes of your 2d characters talking to other characters between battles, but the story is kinda weak. theres no levels or anything but as u get more cards you become more powerful, obviously (if u know how to use them)
this game is 90% gameplay, 10% everything else
ive had a single game take me up to 2 hours...and then lose...

In that case, I will pass. Lost Kingdoms was enough for me.

2 hours per game, having to be done in one sitting, is not a selling point for me and my old balls.

Are the graphics for this piece good? It seems fairly ironic to have a next gen system, and then play cards on it. Not that I would be surprised if Nintendo released SUPER MARIO SOLITARE because I'd be all over that.

this game's totally not for everyone, and 2 hours is a long game, however games usually go about an hour, which is pretty long too

they fit perfectly. they're really well drawn 2d sprites mostly, and the artwork on the actul cards is great

I saw a bunch of used copies for this at my EB for under $20. If someone is desperate I can pick one up for them.

And just to clarify, you can suspend a game before any turn, so you can stop when you need to...
And keep checking on ebgames.com... they pop up every now and then for this price...

I just recently got this game preowned for $17.99 at EBX. It's now $19.99 new at EBs now I think.
The graphics borrow a lot from Strategy/RPG games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, and the like. Cutesy 2D Sprites, but beautifully done
As for the gameplay, as most people have put it, it's a combination of Monopoly/Magic/Yu-Gi-Oh!. You go around a board placing Monsters, casting Spells, and using Items in battle. The goal is to gain the set amount of G (total magic) for the board and to be the first to return to the castle. This borrows a lot from Monopoly is that you can level up your lands and essentially a chain of same element lands (like having a Monopoly).
This game is not like Lost Kingdoms, Phantasy Star Online Episode III, or Baten Kaitos. It's more a Card game than an RPG. For people that are fond of CCGs and TCGs, this is a must have.
Also, let it be known that the computer seems to more often than not roll exactly what they need ;-).

Let me just second what everyone has been saying about this game., it is a great, great game but it does have a niche audience. It's slow paced, easy to learn the fundamentals but takes some time to really get the hang of it and it can get aggravating as a few bad die rolls can ruin your game. And the story is kind of non-sensical but if you're into card games like Magic: The Gathering, this is definitely for you. If you're not, it isn't. But out of all my recent purchases for both Xbox and PS2, Culdcept by far has been getting the most play. It doesn't have great graphics (basically on par with FFT for the PS1) but the card artwork is amazing and the gameplay is solid.

Just picked this up at EB yesterday. They had a bunch of "used" copies for $17.99, but they were still selling it for $39.99 new.
As for the game itself, it's very fun and totally addicting. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes strategy/board/ccg's.
