This going to come out on September 20th. I believe that it is a thinpack dvd complete set. All anime fans who didn't buy dvds from bestbuy (dubbed/subtitled) can purchase this cheapass set for $41.97.

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ADV001326

It is like 2 dollars cheaper than what bestbuy.com has on preorder.

I should waited for the 20% coupon so I could get all 6 dvds for $33.58 (near christmas I believe)

This anime is in my top three of all time, along with Shoujo Kakumei Utena and Princess Tutu. Buy it and be happy!

Buyer beware, however... this is one of the first (of many) "neutered" collections that ADV is releasing. No extras, no cultural notes (which are almost an essential for a series like this) and the fact that the Azumanga "movie" (which many consider to be a part of the series itself) was removed are an absolute turn-off for most people.

I didn't find the translators' notes or the mini-movie/skit collection (or whatever you'd call it) really that essential at all, fun but not required. And the only extras besides those I can remember were sketches and clean openings/endings (which are useless IMO). In fact, I kinda like the way ADV films has planned the recent releasing of some of these series, for once people who buy the original releases don't have to kick themselves because they get a little more and the people who just want to see the series for cheap get just that.

I'm just sad that ADV never included the Azumanga Web Daioh short on any of the DVDs....

Indeed, I wouldn't mind seeing it at least once. Now what I could go for is a new translation for the manga. -_-

I wish I had bought these at BB when they went to $6 or so. Come to think of it, I think my BB might actually have the majority of them and maybe a little BB hunting, if gas permits, and I'll find them all as I think most stores have them in my area stil.

I managed to get volumes 2-6 when Best Buy had them cheap.. I'm still looking for a deal on Dvd 1 + Box, or Dvd 1 (preferably dvd 1 + box)

Isn't the Azumanga short the one that is included on the last DVD in the set? Or am I thinking of something else?

Nope, that was the actual "movie" that was included as an extra on the 6th DVD. The one Kirin is talking about was some online only thing that I wouldn't mind seeing. (I assume it was web only, correct me if I'm wrong)

This is one of the WORST animes ive seen in its own genere. Even with the Cultural Notes this anime still sux. The chars are so lame. the only cool char is the perverted teacher. Ep4 is the only episode that i luaghed at. In my opinion do not waste money on a crap anime when u can get Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu. Thats the funniest anime ever in its own genere.

It's definitely a good idea, but I figured that it may be good to state the fact that this is indeed a barebones release, and not the all-inclusive brick that most were expecting. I recall a seeing a lot of upset people on the Anime on DVD forums, since the Azumanga movie and liner notes were nixed.

SCORE! Been meaning to round out my collection from the BB sale earlier this summer. Thanks for the tip!

EDIT: Picked up Azumanga Daioh Vol 1 w/ Box, Vol 3, and Voices of a Distant Star for $28 with shipping. $7 for FedEx kinda blows, but still a pretty good deal.

Quite nice. I picked up Vol1 w/box, vol 3, and Samurai X Trust/Betrayl for $28 with shipping as well. Combined with my $10 Now and Then, Here and There purchase, this makes me very broke and very happy.

So long as the disks play, I'm happy.

And I'm not too hopeful about my Azumanga Daioh box arriving in any sort of recognizable shape.

At first I thought this was some cool item, but it's just the complete set release - sad. I love this series, and from what I have read about that set here, screw that set. The single DVDs can be found cheap enough that I can't see the total being more than the cost of that boxset. I know you can find some really, really cheap prices at Best Buy B&M for most of the discs and during the once every two month ADV sales - at least for the first DVD and artbox set.

Which, last time my girlfriend bought 3 Saiyuki DVDs and they came brand new and mint, just as if they were purchased from anywhere else. But that is just one purchase, ssssoooo. ^_^

Seriously, How can you not like Azumanga?!

It was just so damn funny. Osaka just cracked me throughout the series...

Azumanga is one of my all-time favorite animes... so I already have the full series, the artbox, and all 5 of those lil' pins that came with certain volumes. I just wish there was an Osaka pin... Osaka rules. :bouncy:

Pins?

Yea, some volumes of Azumanga Daioh came with figure pins. I'd put them on a hat or may backpack if I didn't fear for my "cool" image being trashed. ;)

If anyone is letting their Azumanga Daioh pins go let me know. When we bought the discs my ex-wife was rather enjoying the pins. She'd wear them to work and get compliments all the time. Unfortunately her place is still underwater after Hurricane Katrina. All of her anime as well as the pins and other things she'd collected are now gone forever. Even though she's my ex we're still close and even though I'm an evacuee too and don't have much cash I'm trying to replace a few things she lost as a surprise. And please don't suggest Ebay. I'm not in the sort of financial situation where I can afford to get into a bidding war over pins. Anyway, if anyone is looking to let theirs go hit me up with your price. Thanks!

Yikes, I didn't know the boxset was so crappy. I just bought it too. Fortunately I also have 4 of the 6 regular discs from past ADV sales and just ordered the last 2 from wherehouse.com.
