View Full Version : I hate Unicru, help me pass this Shaq-fuing test
Several people on this board work for CC/BB/<insert major chain here> and since moving back to school I have been searching for a job at these employers. Most stores these days wont even speak to you until you've filled out their application online. Yet most of them have switched over to this online systen called Unicru. The thing that fucks me up is their personality portion where you have to go through 20 pages of questions and answer them in 4 different ways. Even though I have filled the same damn form out almost 20 times now I cant seem to get a callback even though they are hiring. Was wondering if anyone here who has been hired could give me some tips on what answers I should choose since they're looking for consistancy. I'll post the questions and my answers as well.

Physically going to the store and asking to speak with a manager about employment is still your best option. The couple of times I used that Unicru shit I got no response. Talking directly to someone is the way to go because it shows that you have the initiative to work there.
I think those online applications never even get looked at.

I have been to Best Buy here about a dozen times now. Everytime I ask to speak to a manager about employment they try to smooze you over with bullshit even though they have job openings on their bulletin board. Last time I went in the manager took my name, number and SSN and told me they would give me a call. Of course that never happens

They key to passing the test is be strongly one side or the other. Don't be in the middle and be sure to take it as fast as possible.

If they aren't willing to give you the attention or interest in hiring you, then it's probably not worth it to work there.

Oh it's not I can assure you that. This site has some great stories from people who have worked there at one point or another.

This is right on the mark. I used to grade these things for my last employer. Not the same system but the same questions. Choosing either of the middle options is generally considered to be wrong no matter what. You need to choose only strongly agree or strongly disagree to have the best chance.
You need to pass a test... yet you fail miserably at being your own person. ;)
Q: Are you the shell of a human-being?
A: Am I?
I'm just giving you a hard time...
However, call them. Don't wait for them to call your. You have to appear to be assertive (which is border-line dickery, but that's how all "higher-ups" are, anyway). Whatever you do, don't call in sounding mealy-mouthed.

I am bumping this just because I hate Unicru as well.
Last summer I was looking for a job and I would first go to each place where I wanted to apply and then I would be told to apply online, and every time this Unicru shit would come up. I mean, I am fine with the regular application stuff but the personality test is just shit, that is what interviews are for.
And now this summer it is the same damn thing, Unicru personality tests abound. I mean, what the hell?! Do they seriously help you get better people or just liars. Everytime I do these things, I get half way and always think of just saying "Fuck it" and quitting.
Seriously, a waste of my damned time. This isn't freaking a Myspace quiz where I can see which Backstreet Boy I am, it is a god damn employment application!!

Ok, I hate this Unicru crap too! I ran across this thread while doing a search. I just quit my job after 6 long years. I was a hiring manager! We did not use UniCru but im sure it was coming. Well I just received my first interview today a UniCru company. We did have a sheet of ?'s we were supposed to ask applicants. I never once used it. My advice on that test is LIE! I believe it was written for more customer service oriented businesses but I just took this one for a factory. One ? was something like you like being in large crowds of people? they wanna hear I LOVE IT! Personally for me im the most hateful person of the general public. But I can grit my teeth at work. The rest of the ?'s seem to be employee relations. One I can think of Is you feel another persons problems are none of your business? I would answer disagree. I think thats aimed at looking for leadership type people. Say you are the boss and an employee is obviously in a very crappy mood do you ignore or do you see if u can help? Just my two cents on it, but pretend you are the manager when you take it. Maybe that will help. I did score one interview on about 15 I have taken this week. If it was made easy for me I would take one final test online for this site. I did it once maybe I can help someone out. I do feel they ARE unfair. I have had some very good employees that probably would've failed these tests miserably if they took them.

Oh I also forgot to add as a hiring manager I am busy enough, er was! Do not harrass the crap out of them! I have a few of those calling on the phone morning noon night weekends etc! Call during business hours. Monday through Friday only! The people who call constantly are more an annoyance and their aps get shifted to the back. They do that before the job, what happens after they are hired. I ran a 24 hr 7 day a week business including holidays! 98% of applications we got were no weekends first shift only! Hello, the store doesnt close after 2 PM and on weekends! Those apps hit the trash instantly. Keep you schedule open! Nothing worse to a manager than a staff full of employees that will only work weekdays and first shift. Wanna get in, put you will work weekends and you would love to work second or third shift! Even better to keep the options open put down ANYTIME, and mean that!

Hate to bump an old topic, but I got an email from a reporter who is looking to interview people about Unicru. If you are interested in being interviewed for a major publication, drop me an email and I'll hook you up.

I hate this test. I answer pretty much the same each time. For the most part I don't get any calls back and the ones I do hire me. It's pointless since jobs that do use this will pretty much hire anybody anyways.

though hilariously old, i'm still replying to diagree with this post!
reason: back in 05 my freshman year i decided to get a job at wal mart (nobody else would hire me down here in MS because i made way...way too much in IL at a young age and 7 dollars an hour scared people)
i filled out the unicru shit and got a call from wal mart. the woman loved me, but she had a problem. the problem was this; i told the truth too much on my test. some of my views were....not wal mart friendly to say the least!
the solution: she "let" me review my answers (wink). i was laughing on the inside. the funny part was she put stars by the ones i had to "review". so the notion that they don't look at those things...bullshit. depending on teh company, you can be discriminated against based on the answers!

Oddly, this test is a variant on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, which the same thing the Scientoligists plagiarized for the tests they try to flog on passersby.
My brother, who does the business side of Geek Squad (mostly offices rather than residential) was trying get a friend of his hired and learned that a few questions are guaranteed fail for the wrong answer. For instance, there will be a question about whether you enjoy going to events with lots of people and loud music. Saying no is a fail. What they're really looking for here is whether you'll be driven insane if you have to spend long periods of time in the Best Buy store you're attached to rather than out on site.

Unicru sucks.
It has nothing to do with answers.
Basically, just make sure you pick a minority for your race. I never see white people get jobs via unicru.

I just did a Google search on 'unicru cheat sheet' and while it didn't produce the actual item, it did come up with some interesting items. The first three hits were from a autism discussion group.
That may explain a lot.

This test could be really cool. So many sites are using Unicru that if they would let you sign up there, and only have to take the test once and then have it go to all the jobs you apply for. Or like a one stop app place.
