I wish they would have included regular ol' headphones without the weird plug. Just some regular headphone jack headphones.

Just don't plug them into the remote. Voila, regular headphone jack.
As for the OP's question, that's just the way it is. Personally, I don't have a problem with it, and it's not an uncommon design. All it does is make a loop under your head, no big deal.

hahaha--ok guys you are going to smack yourself when you realize this.
The PSP headphones are designed to go around the BACK of your neck--not hang down the front of your neck/face like most headphones do. Try it, and it will make total sense after you do it this way. Put the left side in, pull the right side around the back of your neck and voila...the reason why the cord is lopsided is revealed.

They should have just done it normal though. I switch between these and a different pair of headphones, and that's the only thing that really bothers me about these.

I only use the standard headphones when I need to drown something out. They make fucking terrible sound, but they go right into the ear, which means less of everything around me. This is why I'm getting an iPod to use instead of mp3 playback on my PSP.
