Dreamcast! Totally underrated. Although you can go wrong with any, get all three!

If you like fighting games get a DC
if you like RPG's get a SNES
if you like platformers get a NES
can't ever recommend a Genesis to anyone as I still have not found any worthy games

Dreamcast definitely has some fun fighters, but getting an NES bundle with some games wont cost you much at all.

The dreamcast. It has great games and if you are into emulators you can play snes and nes games on it.

Really did like Vectorman at all, and Sonic is good and all, but I never seem to be able to get into a Sonic game like a Super Mario game.
Not saying the Genesis was a bad system, but its big support was from sports games, which typically do not age well.
I will however give you Kid Chameleon. That is an awesome game (got a complete version for 5 bucks recently)

As a cheap ass, I would reccomend DC.. the games are fairly cheap and there are tons of Homebrew games.
If you DO like RPGs and is leaning towards SNES, be preparred to shell out some $$ for those SNES RPGs.
Between Genesis, SNES, NES and DC, Id get an SNES if price on games was not a factor.. but as a cheapass, DC is a wise choice.

snes, it was the best all around system of all time. IMO

Genesis.
Why?
1. A majority of people had SNES during that console war, so they didn't play many sega games.
2. You can pick up a genesis for 19.99 at most places, and with some bartering or shopping at flea markets or pawn shops, even less.
3. You can buy a power base converter and play Master System games as well.
4. Even the RPGs and other games that are "rare" or in high demand are cheaper than most of the games with the same distinction on the SNES.
ex. PS4 can be had for 10-20 dollars. You'd have to pay a minimum of 25 at most places for any of the SNES Final Fantasies.

I recommend Genesis just because I think the sports games are a tad better and the games are cheaper. You wouldn't go wrong with either Genny or DC.

A SNES is a good choice. But as others have said, the games will cost ya.
A NES is a good idea too, these games will be cheapest.
I can't recommend a dreamcast because I haven't played it.
But in the end, I think the Genesis would be the best overall bet. You can find a handful of games cheap and the system itself is great. I would highly recommend the second generation model. First is too big, and the third doesn't support CD or 32x.

I'd go with a Genesis or a Saturn. Both have some really great games that you can't play anywhere else.

The first ToeJam & Earl on the Genesis was one of the best games for the system, even more fun with 2 players.

NES. Best system ever (it has the best games).

if you get a Genesis they have both Shining Force and Phantasy Star 3 over at Gamestop on Capital.
They also have Sonic 3, Toe Jam and Earl 2 with the box, and a sonic classics cart

Dreamcast, it has a great selection of games, most games are still easy to find (even some brand new) and the games are very inexpensive.

Dreamcast.
Its only 19.99 and they still make games for it (sorta you gotta import them and the new ones are all pretty wierd)

Genesis, for one reason: Gunstar Heroes. If ever a game was deserving of a sequel, it's this one. Treasure at its absolute best. Life changing. I'll shut up now.

I would say Genesis, because I'm mostly a Sonic fan. Though I never had a SNES, many of its best 1st party games have been ported to the GBA (except for some like Super Metroid :( ). Still the decision is ultimately up to you. :)
