I need to make a movie for a college project which utilizes a soundtrack, but I'd like to remove the vocals from a few of my selections. My question is; what sound utility can I useto do it, and can it even be done on home systems? Any help would be appreciated.

If you aren't set on the songs ask your teacher if he (she) has stock music for that purpose, my video teacher (in high school) always has that stuff.

Download, by whatever means you may utilize, "instrumental" tracks.

I ran across software that apparently can do this while searching for karaoke equipment on eBay awhile back. I'm sure you can find a BT of this program somewhere.

Goldwave can do it, depending on how the song was recorded (Some songs it has no effect, and others (like NIN) it removes it completely). Just look for the "Remove Vocals" option.

Yeah, usually if your song has the vocals mixed directly in the center, these programs will work. Otherwise, you will need some expensive, heavy-duty programs to remove vocals. There are some high-end programs out there that allow you to remove sections of the audio (for example, if you want to remove a guitar, and it is located in the range 40%-70% left channel; kinda hard to explain).

Give it a shot.

If this guy comes back with pirated software, then he probably copied the music as well.

Check around for software, use Dogpile.com (Better then Google!)

As mentioned, it's impossible to remove the vocals from a track if you don't have the master tracks.

However, you can find points in songs where there are no vocals, cut and loop 'em enough until you've formed the original song sans-vocals. Of course, this don't always work, especially with dynamic music. This is called sampling. I did it with The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" for some mix I was working on.

I used Adobe Audition (formerly CoolEdit).

If my memory serves me correctly, I think that the software built into a sega saturn can do it. It doesn't realy remove the vocals it just mutes them. Most karaoke machines will do it to...
