A good idea for Sony would be to take a page from Mircosoft and Nintendo and make a deal with Sega to have Sega's past games and systems emulated on the PS3. Sega could develop the the emulators and sell games from SMS, Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear, 32X, Saturn and Dreamcast on the PS3 through an online service that would download the software to the hardrive or memory sticks. Sony would be able to say that their system plays PS1, PS2, PS3, CD, DVD, Blueray and classic Sega games as well. It would be a direct hit to Microsoft and an even bigger blow to Nintendo. This could also be a good move for Microsoft, but I think they are having a hard enough time worrying about emulating the Xbox and it's library.

WTF? That wouldn't be a good move because I wouldn't want to play games with that fugly controller.

Emulating a saturn and a dreamcast is a lot harder than you think.

Plus, that wouldn't make me want to buy a PS3 any more than I do now.

I think the only thing that might make a system more worthwhile would be Sega CD/Saturn emulation, and giving us free access to games like Radiant Silvergun, Snatcher, Policenauts, and all the other $200-300 eBay games that I wish would sleep with me at night.

What's with the b#tching about the controller. Jeez it's not that bad. Yes emulating Saturn and dreamcast would be hard, I didn't say it would be easy, but to has master system and genesis games to answers Nintendo's revolution plan would be a good idea.

Apparently the controller isn't as big as it looks. Don't judge until you use it yourself.

Wait - it can't?? I thought mine was just defective when I stuffed it with ground chuck.

I sure hope it can clean itself.

Sega's games are good but not nearly as heralded as Nintendo's first party games. I could see Sega partenering with Microsoft before Sony. Sony's PS3 will play PS2 and PS One games already. That is still a huge advantage for Sony IMO. The 360 will only play select Xbox titles. With a hard drive and Xbox Marketplace set up, it would be the perfect avenue for Sega to provide older games for download.

Only Nintendo is doing that, and with their games so its not costing them as much as it would for Sony to pay sega for each game available. I dont see how that would be taking a page from Microsoft when they arent doing anything like that either.

One big thing your not taking into account is....theres a reason why Sega isnt in the hardware business anymore.....they werent good at it! The playstation owned the saturn and Playstation 2 hype never gave dreamcast a chance. So why would PS3(which can play PS1 and PS2 games) want to play the games from the system, that failed against it?

No one(even yourself) would pay the price tag to play an old game on an old system, with the price it would cost to have the titles available. Not only that but Sony fans will buy a PS3 because of the PS3 titles....and Sega hardware fans STILL own those systems and have those games because they are diehard fans, it wont make anyone decide to buy a PS3 over an Xbox 360 or revolution if that were the only factor.

What would be a better idea, is if Sega released compilation titles like Namco, Capcom, Tecmo are doing.....oh wait they have :-O Sega Classics, Sonic Mega Collection + etc

Easy? It may not even be possible.

It is possible. If some coders who haven't worked with the actual hardware and dev kits can make emulators from scratch that run a few games, Sega should be able to emulate their own systems.

Hm... if they did that, I don't think most people would care. Lets face it, Sony's core audience only cares for style, not substance (that's why unique/new games rarely do well).

And another thing, if Sega allowed Sony to distribute their games via emulation, that would be kinda costly as Sony would have to pay for the games (so Sega gets something out of it), pay for distribution, and I'm sure they'd like to turn a profit as well.

Besides, this is something that Nintendo is more likely to do than Sony is..

When Sega made the Sega Smashpacks for the DC the emulated crappily. I never realised how bad till I played the real version fo Streets of Rage 2 on my Genesis. Everythin was faster and the music was really diffrent. Animations were also clearer. Im sure its possible with genesis games and Master system as well bu i dont think that the DC is a good idea due to the DC's control design woould completey mess up the gsames to play them on soemthing else.

Your argument is completely baseless.

"If the Dreamcast is power enough to emulate the Genesis, it follows that the PS3 is powerful enough to emulate the Dreamcast".

It doesn't work that way.

main problem is the hardware... also Sega Fees alone is enuff... Think about the testing than recoding, testing... recoding... for each game...

This is Highly costly... A nice Ideal...that Sony Sony should consider... Any Way Sony... got more (useless) important things to worry about... like... getting PS3 to make me coffee in the morning...

If people can create emulators for the computer for saturn and DC then the parent company can easily create one for a console. It wouldn't be "easy" but its not impossible.

I don't think Sony would want to do that, they don't want to be the nostalga system, they want to compete with microsoft and offer new innovations to the industry not rehashing what happened on Sega's consoles. and I agree a DC isn't that expensive and games aren't that expensive (relative) and the saturn failed in comparision to everything else and why would you want to bring a failed system to a proven track record that Sony has.

I think we'll see better compilation discs next gen, but don't expect them to distribute them a la Nintendo or even like XBL marketplace.

I think Sony should make the PS3 able to emulate Nintendo Gamecube and XBox games ......... that would really show Microsoft and Nintendo who's boss and it would pretty much kill both of those companies

One does not follow from the other.

And anyway, are there fully working saturn / dreamcast emulators for the PC?
