Reuters - The U.S. video game arm of Sony
Corp. (6758.T) said on Wednesday it would not update some of
its sports titles this year, mirroring a similar move by
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) amid intense competition.

This is entirely due to EA, in my eyes...they've almost got a damn monopoly on the market. Other games sell decently, like the Sega titles, but it's always Madden that tops the best-sellers lists. EA is the big name, and that's why they sell.

Then again, what do I know?

Why compete when EA and Sega are #1 and #2?

I don't think its necessarily just that EA has the big name. To be honest, the EA sports games are usually better. I buy a lot of sports game, and every time I read reviews and play demos to see which game i like better. Its usually the EA games that I like better. Sometimes there are good reasons why things sell better.

Unless you demand up to date rosters and are willing to pay $50 a year for the privilege, I don't see this as a bad thing.

And has daphatty been away for a while or what?

Yes...he was in the coal mines of Africa, liberating three year olds from the dreaded Black Lung.

Looks like Sony is now following Microsoft's lead?

Nah I doubt it's a lead following thing, they probably just thought... geez have you seen how many used copies of Gameday are sitting onthe shelf at EB? screw this lets take a year off.

I couldnt give a rats ass about sports games but I really think it's time these guys start offering downloadable updates for all there sports games rather than ask you to buy a brand new game every year. I can see sports fanatics doing it because they;re kinda crazy but you shouldn't exploit the mentally ill. :P (You do realize I'm totally joking right? okay good.)

I believe if EA doesn't watch out, this may really hurt them, if another competitor...sega releases a title for example xbox advertising updatable rosters. Though i think it would be best done for the whole community if they had a fee attached.

EA's market share doesn't amount to a monopoly. I love how this word is misused to imply there is impropriety on the part of the winner (EA).

The fact is that 989 sports sucks ass. they haven't put out a decent sports game since the Playstation 1. Their 'success' is the result of making a great game that everybody wants to buy, why is this a bad thing? Do you honestly believe people buy it because it's called MADDEN, or because it has EA stamped on it?

Are we all prepared to bad mouth the next game company that knocks Madden of the top of the hill because they did a good job? jeesh!

The name madden sells games, it's no joke. He wanted to take his name off it untill EA offered him a truck load of money to keep it on. When people think "video football game" they say "madden" it's that simple, unless you're a big 989 or segasports fan.

Yep im glad sony dropped there sports titles they all sucked besides NFL GameDay 97 in which they were the first to use 3-D graphics but other then that all there games sucked

EA RULEZZZZZ

The name Madden doesnt sell the game. I dont even like John Madden i wish they get rid of his commentary on Real NFL games and i also wish they replace him in the game.....John Madden just babbles when he gets the chance and thats why they make fun of him on Mad TV lol......So all in all his name doesnt sell the game.

The name Madden does contribute to some sales, name recognition has been proven already in business. A parent for christmas may buy his or her son/daughter Madden because its familier with football games. In a similar situation the kids may already have a football game..etc "10 yard fight) and the parent may say "that madden football game looks old"

some prolly but i remeber when Madden wasnt even that good.....NFL 2K Series when it was on Dreamcast was the best........thats when i was a 9th grader in High School and no body was talking about madden they were all talking about NFL2k.........ppl will always tend to buy a better title in the same series.......Just like Splinter Cell compared to Rogue Ops...even if Rogue Ops was made for 10 years prior to Splinter Cell which one would u choose......Just like Madden to Gameday.......Madden was and is still better then Gameday would have ever been...

does it matter? i mean ive heard good things about mlb, but the rest of sonys sports games really suck anyways. and im all for less bad games being made

Yeah I find it hilarious when people say they're "playing Madden" liketo them it was a regular home appliance like "watching TV".

I knew this thread would turn into a Madden is great/sucks discussion(argument).

And no I wasn't in the coal mines. :P I got married. I've wanted to dive back into the CAG Community head first but many of the topics of late have been really lame (mainly adolescent flame wars and dick sucking...). So I've stayed in lurk mode...

So what do you say when you're playing your video games?

ElwoodCuse

no surprise here, MLB 2005 is the only 989 PS2 game that wasn't complete ass, and it still lags behind Sega and EA.

So what do you say when you're playing your video games?

I say "I'm playing video games", simple no?

What I mean it Madden somehow becomes a slang word for playing a game sometimes like people will automatically understand when it's said. It's like when you watch a tve show and you hear someone say "stop playing those nintendos" or some equally ridiculously bad phrase while they're holding a saturn controller.

That is the truest statement I have seen in years. The ONLY thing 989 has done that is even close to good in the Syphon Filter series. The butchered the hell out of Twisted Metal and the sports game have been bad for awhile (although I thought the last Gameday game was an improvement).

And I believe it was Gameday 98 that first used 3-D graphics, not 97.

except the first year of 989 football. i remember i think it was 1998 when gameday was actually better and outsold madden that year.

Yea i think i posted that, GameDay 97 or 98 when they were the first to come out with the 3-D gameplay yes Gameday was better.........also Alpha, Papi is right about what do u say when ur playing games....would if they ask u what gamne ur playing.....do u just say no im just playing video games...ppl say they are "playing Madden" just becuz it sums it up, eventually whom ever ask what ur doing and u tell them playing a game they will ask o what game are u playing, If someone asks me what im doing and im playing lets say Breath of Fire 2 i will say "Im playing Breath of Fire 2" So when ppl say they are "Playing Madden" that just means they want to tell u exactely what they are doing so they wont have to answer any more stupid ass question lol

It wasn't a case of it being better. It was because 989 had a 3-D engine for Gameday 98 and Madden 98 was still using sprites.

Sony should just forget about their 989 lineup forever and improve on other games, or specialize in sports that have a better chance at selling well. I think Microsoft should stick with Top Spin, Rallisport, Project Gotham and maybe Links. Sony should do the same.

PapiChullo
05-07-2004, 04:19 PM
I don't think they should forget about it totally, because some people still play those games. I'm not one of them, but I think they should take a couple years off and devote that time to improving their sports titles, and try to compete.

I think that part of EA Sports' success is due to their brand name. Why else would EA sell more of their NBA Live series than Sega's ESPN NBA 2k series when the latter consistently gets better scores?

Theenternal

Or change the name of their studio, and come out with a new gimmick...sorta like in wrestling.
