PS2 Slim DRE Question

My mates PS2 Slim has stopped working. We were playing it then switched it off. When we went back it no longer would read any disks. I get the DRE for every type of disk. My mate switched everything off at the plug the last it worked. Did this cause it or is it just a PS2 problem??

I posted in the sony gaming forum by mistake then thought it was more relevant in here.

If switching it off at the power supply worked then it was probably just some hardware glitch or something, but now it is gone and it may never happen again.

The laser may have been fried. If still under warranty, try calling the sony helpline.
