Probably a YMMV, but I saw it today at a Radio Shack. It's the version with the year of Live, headset and demos of Whacked and Moto GP.

I don't think the year of live that comes with that set is good anymore.

I am sure if you called up they would give you a year. I have heard them doing that with those 2 month trials.

I'll have to check it out. So is this a sale or clearance at your RS.

Great deal. Can someone see if the year still works, or if its dead?

I think the cards just say they are expired, but I think they are still good. Call the xbox number FIRST then go buy from RS second.

I could be completely wrong but I don't *think* the retail cards have any expiration date. I think only the trials do. That'd probably be a lot of hassle dealing with people who paid good money for expired cards. A few weeks ago I activated the 1 year from a 2.0 starter kit. I don't have the scratch-off card anymore but i don't recall seeing an expiration date.....I still have the starter kit box and there's no expiration on it. If I'm wrong, forgive me...

You'd think that if the contents of something inside the package expired they'd want to put an expiration date on the outside to avoid this kind of problem. And if there were any problems I'm sure Radio Shack (crappy as they are) would give you a refund. So if you find it and you want the xbox live time I'd say go for it....

There is an expiration date on the retail box. It's just in fine print on the bottom flap. I think they expired March 31, 2004, but don't quote me on that.

I remember I got one for $20 at my RS a couple of months ago. The code still worked too.

Yeah on the version with MotoGP & Whacked! the instruction manual (pg. 7) states "You must activate your account with the provided subscription code before June 30, 2003". Most likely the Live account is dead I wouldn't gamble on it. If you don't own Crimson Skies the new bundle is the the best deal (headset, Crimson Skies, and 1 yr Live for $70, $65w/ Best Buy GGC)

I got my XBox only a few months ago and it came with Tetris Worlds/Clone Wars. I activated the trial and then I traded for a Starter Kit 2.0 and entered the code in there. It took it fine and now my account shows my current subscription to end soon and after that the new 1 year subscription to kick in. This makes me think that the code worked perfectly. If there's something wrong with the code I entered AFTER I've already had it entered into my XBOX I'm going to go NUTS!

But I think it will be fine honestly. If you get the 1.0 even and try right away I don't think it's much of a gamble you can just take it back - they have to give you your money back. If you're worried about a hassle make sure to pay with a credit card and decline the charges it if they give you a problem.

I just picked one up for radio shack for 29.97 - $5 coupon (off anything, from slickdeals/radio shack home page) so it was $25 + tax. I don't see any expiration date anywhere, including the bottom panel. The one I got has moto gp and whacked, isn't that the 2.0 starter kit?

I'm still having a hard time understanding that...Microsoft decided to offer a 69.99 Starter kit 3 for $30? That's like 60% off! If it's true that was a fantastic discount.

Oh and as for before I think I'm wrong both games might be demo's. But I personally don't care for any of those games or Mech Assault...I'm interested in the headset and the time that's why I got the kit.

I just checked it myself...it's even the new kits with Crimson Skies.....that is pretty amazing....

But I wouldn't mess with that since I don't work for one of those retail stores and none of my family/friend's do either. If I knew someone they sure would have ordered one for me!

Yeah they're discontinued....they're not going to have them back in anymore...who even knew they carried them in the first place? I'm surprised I was even able to find one, because a starter kit at 49.99 (price until recently) is a good deal even the older version....but at 29.99 it's more than half off.

I did one of those live chats and asked the Microsoft Rep. about the older starter kit, whether the card inside would be good. This was the response:

"There is no expiration date on the 12 month subscription card. Though, we recommend that you used it upon purchased. "

Which I'm sure means "Please use it quickly and don't save it for when we raise the monthly rate again." You never know when someone can be giving you wrong information but in this case I think it's safe to say these starter kits with whacked and motogp will be fine. I used one a month ago to extend my trial and it says next account prepaid subscription, already paid for. It's one thing for them to expire free trials, but imagine how irate people would be if they bought a card or a kit and then found out the code didn't work.

My friend got this email regarding the XBOX Live kit from Microsoft retail site after he had ordered it and then asked what he can do because he is not part of any retailer:

If the site allowed you to place the order, then you may keep the order. Thank you

If we may be of further assistance to you, please let us know. Have a great day!

Its a legit deal now straight from Microsoft. If anyone gets hassled from Microsoft just ask me and I'll send you a copy of the original email. I just don't want to post my friends personal info if its not needed.

Isn't it possible that the rep your friend spoke with didn't really understand about the deal and wasn't informed? It seems pretty clear to me that it was intended for retail employees and that Microsoft may be following up.....maybe not though, who really knows.

It doesn't matter if the rep was misinformed. All that matters is that there is proof from a Microsoft rep that said it was alright. Understand now?

> Earlier tonight I was linked to this page directly: http://retail.microsoft.com/retail/xboxoffer/ . I went ahead and ordered an XBOX Live starter kit, but a few minutes ago I found out from another site that I did not qualify for this order. At the site that I found out I don't qualify for this deal it said you had to work for a retail chain, which I do not. Here is my order number: !#$%@%^^&&. I was wondering is there anyway to rectify this situation? I just don't want to get in trouble for jumping the gun on a deal I thought was legit. Email me with your response. I'm not going to get into a long argument about this....how many times in my life have I been told something by one representative of a store or other entity only to get screwed? Just the other week I had a handwritten note from a CSR at CompUSA saying I could come back in and get Spinter Cell Pandora for 29.99 when it came back in...but when I went in, with the note, I was told that the person had no authority to do so and I got the shaft. I called corporate to have them look into it....I'm sure I won't ever hear from them.

Because this friend of yours got this email, there is yes a very good chance that if someone from Microsoft ever questioned his purchase they would accept the email and drop it. But it's still not a guarantee, because they could always decide to claim that the person was not authorized to say that, was misinformed, sorry, etc. I'm not saying that's likely to happen, but it is a possibility. I just disagree that one rep saying something is "all that matters." I just have found in my own experiences that that's not always how the world works.... I certainly wouldn't say that your friend's email can apply to anyone else placing an order without being qualified.

You have your opinion and I have mine, and that's fine. Maybe they don't care if everyone orders the thing, retail employee or not. I just still personally wouldn't do it.

It doesn't matter if the rep was misinformed. All that matters is that there is proof from a Microsoft rep that said it was alright. Understand now?

Why are you getting all pissy over nothing? Relax... Jeez. You obviously don't know anything about the legal system. So, if you don't want to take advantage of a deal that's up to you. Remember it takes two to argue and you seem to be arguing to a brick wall. I was just trying to help out and this is the attitude I get...

Thanks to the person who posted this. I'm too much of a cheap ass to pay 69 bucks for a starter kit, and I've been lighting people's asses up all day in Crimson Skies after getting my cheap ass Starter Kit. Plus.. isn't it a little "unheard of" for Radio Shack to have any kind of deal period?? They're price nazis in everything they carry
