Today I was at Goodwill and found a Magnavox Odyssey 2 for $10. The system with power adapter and 2 controllers.
Looks like this:

No carts with it :-(
I remember I thought it was cool back in the day . . . mainly because it had a keyboard which the Atari 2600 lacked.
I haven't tried setting it up or anything.
Why do I buy this stuff which always becomes a project? Now I have to find Odyssey games and get it working.

This is a question that can't really be answered. My reply will be, "..."

Well to each his own, there's plenty of worse things you could have invested in ;) , enjoy memory lane...
I'd have bought it, just to have it. The grand daddy of consoles.

I almost bought a Power Glove for $6 the other day. I'd never use it and it would just sit in my closet...
Similar situation, but I resisted!

I think it has something to do with these boards. Ever since I joined CAG i have accumulated more games than I have time to play (but hey i got 'me at a great deal!), yet i continue to buy more.... :::shrugs:::

This is a good point . . . I have such a stack of unplayed games and I know as soon as I get my hands on We Love Katamari everything else will be pushed back further.
But I also have been collecting all this old junk as well.
Granted, if I stumbled into a bunch of O2 carts then this purchase will be great.

KC Munchkin, fool! Pick Axe Pete!!!! Aw yeah!!!
There's still one at my mom's house, but I think the controllers might be fried. O2 was a pretty good system, but got obliterated by Atari 2600. Have fun, if it works.

I have so many games that I haven't played yet and games that i'm looking to buy that it's getting crazy. I feel you. For example I love RPG's. But I have N O time to play the games.

I woulda done the same thing. Even if it never works, it'll make a great display piece. :D
I bought an Atari 2600 waaaay back in school... no hookups. I got it tested at a retro game event up here, but they couldn't get it working. One of these days, I'm gonna get hookups, clean it up as best I can, and try again. if it still doesn't work, I will do one of the following:
1- I'm picky about wanting a 'Vader' model if I have an Atari hooked up... so I may gut another working system and put it in this one's casing so I have that.
2- Get a big display box with a lil plague (Atari 2600, circa 1984 or similar) and set it up with era-appropriate accessories... old coke can, vinyl album/8 track...
3- mount the board in a shadow box, hinge the yop, install a clock in the cart slot, and use it as a paper tray on a desk.

CPU: 8-bit Intel 8048 (1.79MHz)
RAM: 64B (integrated in CPU)
Colors: 16 (4 on screen)
Resolution: 280x192
Sprites: 4
Sound: 1-channel mono
Game Media: 2K programmable game card
Gotta love those specs. :) It's quite insane how far the industry has come in less than 30 years. I did the same thing with an intellivision. Bought it just to have it (and the D&D cart that came with it). I've never gotten it to work though...

There is a thrift store in my town that has a one of those consoles and a bunch of carts. Unfortunately, they want $20 for the console and $3 per game, there are 20 games. What makes it worse is that the games are all with their original boxes. I'm not paying $80 for a console and games that are over 20 years old. If it was a garage sale, I would be tempted to offer $5 for the hole set, considering its age. That console and games have been sitting there for at least 2 months.

This is a good point . . . you can do better at a yard sale on this stuff. I just can't get away to go to sales.
Also, buying a lot on ebay makes more sense then your thrift shop.
