I am evacuating Houston in the morning, and my cousin wants to drive her Range Rover from here to Kansas with 5 people in it. The problem is that it will take us 4-5 hours to leave the Houston city limits due to congestion, and cars are running out of gas sitting idle in traffic. My question for you guys is, should I recommend that we take my '96 Accord instead if we are going to be sitting idle for that amount of time? I realize the space constraints could make it uncomfortable, but I also don't want to run out of gas on the middle of the highway at 3:30PM during the hottest part of the day. Or am I overreacting? Any advice would help. Thanks.

Take the Accord. Better safe than sorry. Besides, if traffic is going to be so bad that you'll be sitting there that long, just get out of the car and walk around a little bit to stretch your legs.

The accord would probably get better mpg so that would probably be the more logical choice, but my friend who works at cheveron said that they are expecting more gas to come tonight to stations all around town supposidly. As far as the car, take what you would be most comfortable in. By the look of the traffic on 290 and 45 your gonna be in it for awhile. Load it up with all of the things you want to take with you. Im trying to decide if I want to leave or not, thoose 120 mph winds sound scary.

They sound even more scary when they're 175mph which is what everyone has been telling me. Did they downgrade to 120mph winds? All I heard was category 5 and I said seeya. If you stay, be safe. I have a friend staying but I swear, if it was my choice I'd beat him down then take him with us. ha. See you on the roads. Look for a black range rover with 4 adults and a baby, or a green accord with the same. I really hope we take the accord though...we'll see I guess. Hey, we can be CAE's. Cheap ass evacuaees. Horray for us!

Well, you said you had about half a tank of gas, so why not drive out as far as you can, while leaving some gas in your tank to get to a gas station later and have your cousin meet you outside the city. That way the traffic shouldn't be as bad, and you should already be to a point in which the hurricane can not reach you.

Take the RR and just try to stasy off of the highway itself, you'll probably make better time on the access roads.

The RR could do a little off-roading if you get stuck behind someone that ran out of gas.
Don't forget to cut the engine off anytime you are sitting idle for long periods of time.
Good luck to you and and everyone else going through this.

That probably won't be until just before the storm is projected to hit on Saturday. You would like to be out before the threat of the storm and getting out of that area is going to be a nightmare for the time being until the storm.
Isnt the storm supposed to hit you Friday night? You would probably have the best luck leaving when the storm has come onshore when most have left and or hiding. Then take the RR for any debris or offroad activity you might come into contact with.
Syphon gas out of cars your not going to use and bottle it up if you have to. Most of luck to you man... take care... thought are with all the people in texas and all the cags in texas....
