View Full Version : My Target Story - How I almost finally got a cheap Donkey Konga 2

I went into target last night, they just redone their game section with all new cases so all the clearance items were moved to a new section.

I walk to the clearance section, and there it was, Donkey Konga 2 with Bongos sitting there with a 20.98 price tag on it! I nearly peed my pants, I've hit at LEAST 5 Targets in different towns looking for the 14.44 one that had been posted a while back with no luck. I found my diamond in the rough, this made my evening.

I picked this up and a set of bongos and took them to the scanner just to be sure, scanned the bongos and they were still 14.98. :( Then I scanned the Donkey Konga 2 and it came up as 49.99. Oh no, but I figure I'll talk to a manager and hopefully he'll just price adjust it for me, either that or I'll demand to get them at 20.98.

I put the Bongos down back in clearance, find a manager, explain that it had 20.98 on it and it scanned at 49.99 and that I'd like him to do a price adjustment for me and let me get them at the 20.98 marked price. He said it was an accident and wasn't supposed to be like that, and he said "sometimes people swap price tags and expect to get them cheaper but chicken out and leave them on the shelves" and then insinuatingly said "You know..not that you'd do that or anything, I'm just saying". I told him that they were on the shelf with that price tag on it, and I want them for 20.98. He said that he couldn't do that, the best he could offer is 30% off the original 49.99 price...take it or leave it.

I pushed a little more, and he wasn't budging, and I realized that no matter what I did I wasn't going to get Donkey Konga 2 for 20.98 and I was not paying 35.00 (after 30%) when it was priced at 20.98 on the shelf.

So I left, very sad and broken hearted...maybe one day I'll get that set cheap. :(

That just happened to me the other day... some idiot put at least 20 + copies of Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects for ps2 in a slot that had a 29.99 price tag. I didn't really want the game, per se, but for $30 I'd buy it, try it out, and sell it on here.

No dice, the employee wouldn't budge, and said "someone must have moved them all". I said "Yea, obviously an employee, since they are behind locked glass... there is no chance you'll honor your own mistake?". He told me no as he ripped the price tag off.

Target really sucks when it comes to shit like that. At my store, I own a price if it's marked wrong, since it's my mistake.

I got lucky a couple weeks ago at my local Super-K. They had Metal Slug 3 with a $4.99 clearance sticker on it, but at the register it rang up $24.99. The girl balk at all when I pointed out the sticker. She called to her manager and she overrode it. Best deal I've snagged in a while

I've done it before at my store too, I priced a 200.00 necklace at 79.99 once, I caught it before a customer did but if I didn't and a customer seen it priced at that and wanted it for 79.99, I'd have lost money, but I'd have happily sold it knowing the customer would be back. It's good customer service that keeps people at your stores, not half-ass accusing them of price swapping and refusing to honor your own mistakes.

The number to Target Guest Service Representative is 1-800-440-0680.

Call and complain about this. I got screwed over a few years ago when they left a TON of PS2 DualShock controllers on a peghook for $24.99 (and even the tag said PS2 DualShock). They wouldn't honor the mistake when it came up at $29.99. I left the DVD I was buying along with the controller and left it there for the employee to put back.

I would've taken it straight to the register.

Once you (or we, true for anyone) gets excited about a deal the adrenaline gets pumping. I bet you looked like you were pulling a fast one . . . even though you weren't.

You should have brought it to the register with some cover purchases and pointed out the price after it scanned.

Better yet, have an adult female with no stake in it do it for you.

Still might have been shot down, but there is a better chance at that point to get it through.

I actually snagged a good deal at Target once. It was on the Star Wars Lego AT-AT kit. They had been $99.99 but then after christmas I was walking around the store and spotted a clearance isle with the kit sitting on the bottom shelf along with 5 others. The sign in front of it said 75% off original price but the red tag wasn't even close to that. We got someone to come back there and they said the same thing about someone changing things around and so I just said listen all of these sets are in order and not just mixed about (there wasn't even another place on the isle that was open or large enough for the boxes). I said that if they really felt that way then they should have an employee go down the isle more often to pick up and that I expected to have the 75% off. After a few moments of thinking the manager finally agreed to the deal and told me that at the register when it rang up to have the cashier call back to the toy department and that she'd straighten things out. I think that's probably the best that I could have done but it was definately luck that I got that one.

I got my Donkey Konga 2 from EBGames. I was at the register adn I see that there are two (preowned) DK Bongos sitting there 12.99 each. I as for the game and they say it's 19.99 (Actually it was 29.99, but I didn't care) so I got 2 Bongos(with lifetime warenty) and Donkey Konga 2 for for $50.22. Not cheap, but I really wanted it badly. Also, My Target had nothing DK-wise

Did they do anything for you? I plan to call anyway, but I want to know if they'll compensate for it somehow.

I just got off the phone with Target Guest Services. They took down all my information and my side of the story, and the guy I spoke with told me that he'd call the store and get back to me with what they say. If they don't allow me to have it at 20.98, Then I'll just report them to the BBB. I'm tired of playing around.

Well, they offered to send me a 10.00 gift card so I took that. It was either take that or nothing I suppose.

Now, should I still report them to the Better Buisness Bearau or not? I've accepted their compensation but I'm still not happy with the outcome.

Are you frickin serious? You get a $10 gift card for nothing and you still want to make a stink?!?!

That would be an extreme waste of your time. The BBB is a joke, and it's not like a negative report on frickin' TARGET is going to have an effect on them.

a 10.00 gift card does not equal a 20.98 Donkey Konga 2.

I'm still pissed I was accused of price swapping and refused the on-the-shelf tag price.

Well it sure as hell got me my 20.00 Paper Mario Gift Voucher from EBGames.

Report them for what? They made a pricing mistake. We've all made mistakes. They even gave you compensation when it wasn't needed. We've all missed out on a great deal; suck it up and move along...

Well maybe you can use the $10 gift card to buy grape jelly and then force the manager to lick the jelly out of your ass crack. Would that make you happy?

I think that's what I may wind up doing.

I just really wanted the game. :/ And yes, making the manager lick jelly out of my ass would make me feel peachy. LOL

Have you checked the local Wal-Marts? Mine had DK2 with bongos for $20.XX a while back in their clearance area...I didn't pick it up, but they no longer have them at mine.

My Wal-Mart's never put a THING on clearance. Hell, everyone in my area still has N64 games for 49.99 and PSone games for the same. :/

DK Bongos at ebgames.com: $9.99, plenty in stock (only 7 have sold since 9 am or so); free shipping w/ SAVER if purchased with any used item

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/244944.asp

Donkey Konga 2 @ Best Buy: $14.99 after GGC

Total: $25.98 + tax. $5 more than the Target mistake, but totally do-able and not reliant on being at Target at the right magic moment; BB.com says that there's "limited store availability" of DK2, but there are tons of copies in my area, so I don't know which stores are seeing limits.

Wow, serious?

Shit, I could care less about their pricing error on Marvel Nemesis and the fact they wouldn't honor it, but a free $10 dollar gift card sounds good to me.

You know what? Go back to the store, and talk to the manager again, and try to get him to the 30% discount again. Then use the giftcard and pay the 25 dollar difference. Then you get the game for almost the same price as tagged.
