Burghardt, of Huntington Beach, Calif., started his third tour in Iraq trying to beat the insurgents to the IEDs - improvised explosive devices - and disarm them before the insurgents could set them off.
As is often the case, Burghardt and his Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were accompanied to a bomb site Monday by the First Platoon, 167th Cavalry of the Nebraska National Guard.

One IED had blown up a Bradley fighting vehicle and killed a U.S. soldier. As often happens, the insurgents left behind more IEDs. Burghardt disarmed two bombs that were found - quick action that probably saved the lives of several Nebraska soldiers.

But he couldn't get to a third.

When word spread that the third device had been found, 167th Capt. Jeff Searcey of Kearney, 1st Lt. Matthew Misfeldt of Omaha and their men hit the ground as a blast exploded skyward.

Burghardt was wounded.

But with two new young Marines in his ordnance disposal unit - and the insurgent attackers undoubtedly looking on - "I didn't want them to see the team leader carried away on a stretcher," he said.

So after the Nebraskans tended to wounds that reached from his boot tops to the small of his back, Burghardt rose to his feet and reached back with a one-finger salute for his attackers.

"I was angry," Burghardt said.

IEDs - which can be roadside bombs, car bombs or other booby traps - increasingly are the weapons of choice for the Iraqi insurgents.

Unwilling or unable to attack U.S. forces head-on, the insurgency has used the hidden explosives, often detonated by remote control. Some analysts have estimated that nearly 12,000 IED incidents occurred in Iraq in 2004.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal units are assigned to locate, identify, disarm and dispose of IEDs. The Nebraskans alongside Burghardt's unit provide security at the scene, guarding the perimeter while the EOD teams do their dangerous work.

The 1st Platoon has been on 80 such missions, including some false alarms, since the 167th Cavalry arrived in Ramadi about 90 days ago.

Working together, the ordnance disposal Marines and the Nebraska National Guardsmen have developed a mutual respect - there's no Army-Marine trash-talking here.

"The biggest threat to us in Iraq is IEDs. We love working with them. They make us better soldiers," Misfeldt said.

Burghardt, an 18-year Marine with 15 years' experience disarming explosives, returns that admiration.

"I feel part of this Army team," he said. "They take care of us like brothers."

Burghardt received the Bronze Star during his last tour of duty for disarming 64 IEDs. This week's incident was his first injury.

Burghardt, 35, wouldn't accept painkillers when he was brought back to camp by the Nebraskans. He knew he might need them later. And he's not looking to leave Ramadi for five more months.

"I don't want a ticket out," he said. "I want to stay here so we can take as many people home as possible."

Soldiers all the way up to the brigade's commander, Col. John Gronski, viewed a photo of Burghardt - on his feet, arm extended and middle finger raised - as the embodiment of the American warrior.

As for Burghardt, he said he wanted to send a message to the insurgents who failed to kill him.

"I knew there was somebody disappointed out there."

No, that you're a dumbass. You bitch about me "bitching, moaning and complaining behind [my] keyboard", and try to use this man's story to make that point, yet what the fuck are you doing? Are you neck-deep in a trench outside Fallujah with insurgents shooting at you? Fuck no. You're sitting on your ass posting on an internet message board, just like the rest of us.

I think you proved MY point. You're all worked up, swearing like a sailor because you know you're exactly the worthless POS I've described. It's okay to be identified as a do nothing coward, life is full of them and they're the majority of the population. It's okay that you can't acknowledge or thank anyone for protecting your freedoms. That's not why military people do their jobs.

So keep swearing, keep calling me a piece of shit, dumbass etc. You made my point clearer than I ever could have. Since you'll never say thank you to a soldier in uniform I'll say thank you for illustrating you're the kind of person I was talking about.

You're worthless liberal coward who neither appreciates, respects and dare I say deserves the freedoms you enjoy and take for granted.

That man and his spirit are very heroic. I understand and appreciate him. However, in this country it is not only our right to question our leaders, it is our responsibility. ( I love that quote, even if the movie's views are liberally slanted.)

That being said, you did label liberals as cowards, which was unfair and out of line. It would have done you better to simply make some sort of tribute thread, rather than creating something that was obvious flamebiat.

So wait, the only way for liberals to be respectable in your eyes is to go to war and give our lives to a cause that we don't believe in? That would be behaving like sheep. What about the liberals who are beaten up by police in your back yard:

Gone was the fury of Aug. 20, when police used pepper spray and a Taser gun on a war protester and arrested her and three others.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05240/561432.stm

Or, earlier in the year when police attacked nonviolent Iraq war/bush protestors on my campus, sending some to the hospital (I did personally know some of the people):

http://auto_sol.tao.ca/taxonomy/page/or/154?PHPSESSID=afb412ee45ae89387ea4ab73223ac8aa

or other protesters who essentially offer themselves up for arrest (ie. lie down in the middle of the street and refuse to move unless forcible carried or arrested).

A person who is against a war isn't anything but sheep if they put their life on the line to fight in that war.

Fighting a war in a place that was of no threat to us anyway has nothing to do with protecting our freedom. It's essentially no more than an empty slogan, anywhere the military goes people claim they're "protecting our freedom", when most of the time that isn't the case.

mykevermin
09-24-2005, 10:59 PM
If you can't consider that people opposed to the war are exhibiting spirit, then you're lying to yourself.

Evidently, PAD seems to have mistaken "going to war in a country unrelated to our experiences in terrorism thus far" for "being against a war against terrorist organizations."

In the end, your ideology will lose for the simple fact that you incorrectly assume that all liberals are cowards, and that liberals are against any war at any time. Your assumption is proven to be CLEARLY wrong if you consider approval ratings both for the president and military action post 9/11, and how both have dwindled to less than hald of what they were 4 years ago. Over 9 in 10 Americans supported a war against terrorist organizations 4 years ago, whereas fewer than 4 in 10 support the war in Iraq today. The trends over time simply show you to be nothing but incorrect.

Also, in the future, please don't mistake circumstance for heroism. Almost getting blown up is very rarely heroic, and almost always circumstantial. Sticking around the military after almost getting blown up is not heroic either (unless you'd like to argue that its necessary corollary, "leaving the military early after almost being blown up makes one a coward" is also true; you can't have one without the other). Finally, flipping someone off is not heroic; it's symbolic, but more pedantic than heroic.

I agree with the other posters that labelling people who disagree with the war "cowards" is a McCarthyesque attempt to stifle dissent, PAD.

You know from my postings during the campaign that I am 100 percent supportive of the troops, and would wish not a one of them ill. Why, then, am I a "coward" for disagreeing with an action in which I think their talents, training and lives are being horribly misspent?

If I were you, I would save your venom for the 101st Fighting Keyboarders, those chickenhawk right-wing bloggers who argue wholesale for the war, but refuse to offer themselves or their children up for military duty. I would say the hypocrisy and cowardice runs much deeper there, because they are refusing to participate in something they allegedly believe in.

Now that's not helpful. They are over there, we can applaud them for heroism, or we can scream "illegal war" till our face turns blue.

If you have a problem with the policy, you take it up with the policymakers. Write your congressman, vote out the administration, heck, even run.

What details do you want? Basic training Fort Knox, AIT Fort Knox Kentucky, assigned to 28th Division for Army Reserves during college, deployed to Saudi Arabia October 1990, combat south eastern Iraq 1991, occupation of Kuwait, return to U.S. June 1991, graduate college with B.A., served active duty 1993-97 assigned to Fort Hood, Texas 2nd ACR, applied for and transferred to Fort Irwin, CA as OPFOR platoon commander to train U.S. and allied armored units, attended War College Carlisle, PA 1996 3 month advanced manouvering and attack tactics, honorable discharge May, 1997.

Why aren't I serving now? Simple, no slots. That's why I accepted discharge. The ranks above Captain were very hard to come by in the mid 90's. That was one real problem with the military reorganization after the Gulf War many junior grade officers were unable to make a career out of the armed forces due to force drawdown requirements.

The intel being wrong does not mean the war was a bad idea, if it was merely a means at accomplishing a greater good. If the intel was the main basis of your decision, as it seems to be pad's and the administrations, then it's a bad idea.

Actually, Quillinon, I think it's perfectly acceptable to call a chickenhawk a coward if the person beats the drums for war but won't put the lives of themselves or their loved ones on the line.

What would you call a person who picks a fight, then runs and hides behind someone else? A coward. Same difference.

"Interviews also show a side of Pat Tillman not widely known — a fiercely independent thinker who enlisted, fought and died in service to his country yet was critical of President Bush and opposed the war in Iraq, where he served a tour of duty. He was an avid reader whose interests ranged from history books on World War II and Winston Churchill to works of leftist Noam Chomsky, a favorite author."

"Yet other Tillman family members are less reluctant to show Tillman’s unique character, which was more complex than the public image of a gung-ho patriotic warrior. He started keeping a journal at 16 and continued the practice on the battlefield, writing in it regularly. (His journal was lost immediately after his death.) Mary Tillman said a friend of Pat’s even arranged a private meeting with Chomsky, the antiwar author, to take place after his return from Afghanistan — a meeting prevented by his death. She said that although he supported the Afghan war, believing it justified by the Sept. 11 attacks, “Pat was very critical of the whole Iraq war.”

PAD not even worth posting here if you are a conservitive. 99.99% of everyone on these boards is a liberal so if you start a post that doesn't go with a left wing liberal point of view you'll never here the bitching and moaning end. Have fun Msut77 with making a wise ass reply!

Ya know, your point would have carried more weight if you had spelled conservative and hear correctly.

Or was over 15. MrFriday isn't known around here for being very bright or very old.

dtcarson, elprincipe, derwood43, and *occasionally* (but very rarely) bmulligan present arguments that can be construed as conservative (even if they are more often libertarian than conservative), and they tend to do so in a cogent and respectful manner.

PAD and MrFriday, among others, are the more outspoken variety. Their threads, and the caustic nature of their posts, tend to get greater attention than the rest. In my little world, where everything can be tied into professional wrestling, people like PAD are like The Ultimate Warrior; charismatic, flashy, and ultimately superficial. They *have* to resort to outrageousness to survive, because they lack the necessary skills to do anything else. Others are more like The Dynamite Kid, who received very little credit (during his time, anyway) for being a fantastic wrestler, despite his ability to entertain a crowd. Dynamite lacked the charisma that The Ultimate Warrior had, but he had all the substantive qualities that the former lacked.

Hmm, that post just went in a rather strange direction. I hope it makes sense.

Mykevermin, you do not know me, so to make such a false statement is outrageous. Yes, I am 16 years old, do I care about spelling and grammar on an online message board no. Why would I care about spelling and grammar, I am not here to impress anyone on these message boards. The only place I care about spelling and grammar is when I am in school or when I engage in an adult conversation. Mykevermin, since I am not so bright maybe my 3.7 GPA is lying about my intelligence. I'm not saying that a 3.7 GPA is amazing but it's better then most. I suppose with my small dumb witted intelligence I can get into Honors classes in High School, (Honors US History 2, Honors Constitutional Law, and Honors Physics). Also, you bring to notice my relatively young age, yea I am 16 years old. mykevermin what are you possibly in your 20’s-30’s? In my opinion, age sure doesn’t bring along a strong intellect because you’re a prime example of that. I can’t wait to get flamed for this one, it just makes my day watching you insipid people bitch and moan all day about people you do not know.

*sigh* alright, here goes. It is correct because *here* you aren't known for being very bright or very old. You may not be seen that way by everybody, but that isn't what I said. I'm not known for being sober at my bar, but that doesn't mean I'm never sober. Your breathless and incoherent babbling are crystal clear evidence that reinforce the very point I made several posts ago.

Yes, I am 16 years old, do I care about spelling and grammar on an online message board no.

I wasn't the one who chastised your spelling or grammar. I said you weren't very bright, and that was an indication of your incapacity of debating politically at an adult level. It's not meant to be offensive, precisely because you aren't an adult. I don't expect you, as someone who embraces conservative ideology, to be able to cite Adam Smith at will to reinforce your points. On the other hand, if you want to claim to be intellectually capable, you ought to produce more posts that don't immediately refute that claim.

Why would I care about spelling and grammar, I am not here to impress anyone on these message boards.

Well, you sure are getting upset about failing to impress people.

The only place I care about spelling and grammar is when I am in school or when I engage in an adult conversation.

The latter is, as you claim, what you are trying to do here. Please be consistent in the future.

Mykevermin, since I am not so bright maybe my 3.7 GPA is lying about my intelligence.

Well, I'm a quantoid, so I respect numbers. Are we talking out of 4 or 5 here? On the other hand, high school courses serve as college prep. Critical thinking skills are, lamentably, not taught until your third year of college or so. It's a shame, really, because anything prior to that is, as far as aptitude is concerned, merely a marker of your recitation ability, and not indicative of any deeper cognitive skills.

I'm not saying that a 3.7 GPA is amazing but it's better then most.

Okay. You win a twizzlers bar.

I suppose with my small dumb witted intelligence I can get into Honors classes in High School, (Honors US History 2, Honors Constitutional Law, and Honors Physics).

I thought you weren't here to impress people? Why do you feel the need to give me your academic resume? Those are impressive classes, and indicative of excellent work in your freshman or sophomore year. Not to slight your academic work, but I see nothing here, not in your conversation, that indicates you deserve any attention whatsoever. Your first post here was nothing more than an overgeneralization of how conservatives are looked upon in the vs forum. I pointed out that there are several who often make cogent points and arguments, and then there are those who engage of pedantics, hyperbole, and blatant falsehoods. You, I am afraid, have shown no indication of being part of the former cohort, and every indication of being part of the latter. Again, no offense, you've years ahead of you to learn.

Hell, if you're so smart, perhaps you can put together a treatise refuting Karl Marx's criticisms of capitalism (in Das Kapitale), given that most conservatives like to falsely refute him by pointing to multiple real-world examples of communist failure (in the meantime, of course, failing to recall that Marx did not specify any kind of political system as Marxism, and the critics of his also erroneously gloss over all of his criticisms of the inequality inherent in capitalist relationships). So, if you've the time, there's a task for you.

Also, you bring to notice my relatively young age, yea I am 16 years old. mykevermin what are you possibly in your 20’s-30’s?

Yes. 26 to be precise.

In my opinion, age sure doesn’t bring along a strong intellect because you’re a prime example of that.

I can assure you that, if you want to play the game of "my academic resume is an indication of my intelligence," you'd not win. I get paid to study for a reason.

I can’t wait to get flamed for this one, it just makes my day watching you insipid people bitch and moan all day about people you do not know.

Hmm. I merely said that you are young (which you admitted you) and that you aren't very bright, based upon your posts on this board (none of which refute that claim). You can extrapolate that all you want, but the fact remains is that your fervent response to my post was based on the realization that you have nothing to show me that says I was wrong in my characterization of you. And, prior to this post, "bitching and moaning" about you all day was one line in one post. You truly aren't that important, child.

Book smarts don't always mean you present intelligent arguments. The least socially conscious people in my high school tended to be in the AP courses.
