It's not the programs themselves that'll get you into trouble, it's what you download using them that will.

Stay away from stealing copyrighted material and you should be fine.

First, Kazaa installs spyware on your machine. If you must, use Kazaa lite.

Second, there are file sharing programs other than Kazaa/Kazaa lite, some of which guarantee anonymity. I can't list them because I don't really care about it.

Third, it's OK to use file sharing programs without downloading music.

Fourth, most non-RIAA artists actually want to be heard by as many people as possible, and we can't afford to give the RIAA any money for liberty erosion anyway, so just stick to clean (non-RIAA music and you should be fine.

Fifth, nobody is safe from lawsuits, though the innocent are theoretically safe from a verdict against them.

Sixth, I suspect none of us is a lawyer. Don't rely on strangers' posts for legal advice.

Well I guess the occasional Music Download is fine, just dont stay too long. Most people who get caught are the ones with tons of MP3s for download, but of course RIAA cant do jack about people from other countries..hehe upyours RIAA.

As far as I know you are only at risk if you have and share large amounts of "copyrighted" material.

Make sure also to grab a firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware program ;)

Or you can just install Kazaa Lite, which has all the Spyware removed:

http://www.k-lite.tk/

Also has some nice tweaks to the software.

Kazaa is for housewives and little girls.

That's kind of funny, cause my wife is the one that uses it.

I probably should clarify that. Kazaa simplifies the process to a point where just about anyone can use it. That's the reason for the explosive growth of the P2P clients. Piracy has gone on through the newsgroups for decades, yet it only seemed to get mainstream media attention when it exploded thanks to the ease of use that the Web and P2P clients added to it. As it is, most of the substantial piracy still takes place on the newsgroups, yet you really don't hear about it unless it is in conjunction with a well known P2P client.

I try to stick to mIRC, which is by no means easy, but with packetnews and xdccsearch it's a little easier.

anyone notice that the kazzaa lite site is now a pay site?

i remember i read that Kazaa sent cease and desist orders to all sites hosting Kazaa Lite because its really just a pirated version of their own program. Maybe they worked out an agreement with Kazaa to sell the software and give them a piece of it.
