I want to try this game out so bad-- I hear it's insane. I need something that tops Ikaruga in intensity.
Been playing some Raiden 3 lately, which is a bit too mellow...nothing is the same after playing Ikaruga :(

If this is the same Dondonpachi that was on an arcade machine earlier, then I've played it. It's top-down like Ikaruga, but not even half as hard. The game is fun, but too easy and definitely too short. It doesn't top Ikaruga in intensity. I finished it in 2 player mode with the bf in one sitting in less than 30 minutes.
The power-ups are insane though. Each powerup gives you a wider laser-shot and eventually, it looks like there's a bright blue phallic shaped object coming out of your tiny ship. At least, that's what it looks like to me.
edit: If you want a different type of shooter and have a DC handy, I suggest looking for Sky-gunner. It's a shooter, but you can switch directions on the fly. Hard to explain, I guess. You can turn in all 360 degrees and definitely need to for some of the boss battles.

Don Don Pachi is awesome. It is fully playable in MAME (along with other similar top-down shooters). You should be able to find it somewhere...

Maybe there's more than one-- there's one that just came out for the PS2 called Dodonpachi Daioujou...afaik, it's a ps2 exclusive

From the screenshots on IGN, the one you're talking about looks like the old Dondonpachi on the arcade systems, as far as the gameplay is concerned, but the character selection and story screens look completley new.
