It isn't a set percentage but rather Best Buy's cost plus 5%.

i think you have to work at bestbuy for like 4 months to be able to get the discounts. i heard it was crazy discounts like 40% electronics.

You get a spiffy blue shirt and the "Anti-CAG Manifesto" for starters. I think you can eventually work your way up to disgruntled postal worker.

yeah its cost + 5%. you can get some really good deals on certain things. i think you have to wait like 30 days though before you can use your discount.

No, the cost as in what any individual item costs best buy to purchase it from the manufacturer. This may come as a surprise to you but Best Buy has to pay companies for their products...

I thought you meant like for a new game, $49.99 + 5%. I thought it was a joke. I didn't understand your statement, you definitely could have made it clearer. But that is a ridiculously good discount... I think at least.. :D

I'm not exactly sure how to make it more clear. Now, if I had said Best Buy's PRICE plus 5% then I could see confusion but I did type cost...

i worked in their geeksquad for a while. some of the discounts were awesome. i bought a $31 firewire cable once for $1.50. blank CDs are also cheap and everything where there is a big markup. but normally, you get a $50 game for around $42.

It's not so great on games / dvd's / cd's, since they don't sell them for much more than what they pay for them.

The discount is really nice on televisions, computers, and ESPICALLY car audio.

I can 2nd that... I got a 10" Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 2 speaker for $54! Those suckers sell for over $110!!!

But as for the electronics... nothing happening. I inquired about an iPod... ya. right. i think the discount was less than $10, so somewhere in the nieghborhood of ~$290 for the 20 GB (?).

I AM a disgruntled postal worker, but it isn't all it is cracked up to be. They won't even let me bring a rifle in to work! ;)

Actually you dont get much of a discount on computers, just computer accesories. The computers themselves have incredibly small mark up.

As people stated, it's cost + 5% on the item.

If Best Buy is making a lot of money on an item, like an ink cartridge, you'd get it for very cheap. If it's something they don't make much money on, like an iPod, then yes, the discount isn't good.

It all depends on the item. As one of the posters above said, the $31 FireWire cable was $1.50, which shows you how much profit they're making on a cable. An assload of money, so it's dirt cheap for an employee to buy it.

If it's high profit, it's cheap to the employee, if it's low profit, then it's not that cheap. I'm sure all their house-branded stuff, like the Insignia items, are all uber-cheap to employees.

A guy I worked with used to work at BB, and he bought me a 512MB USB Flash drive back about 2 years ago, and it was $110 for him with tax, and $150 + tax for retail sales. The main draw for him was the inside sales stuff, like buying a $500 HP digital camera for $200, when he went through the HP online testing for how to sell it, or buying processors and system boards on the cheap from Intel, which they let employees do like once a year.

My friend who used to work there says the same thing about the cost + 5%, but he also said they got 50% off tvs...

50% off tv's? nope, never got that, and I bought my tv from there when I used to work there.

And to get the discount, normally it's 30 days, but I think around the christmas holidays, it starts right away (or a very short wait time). At least, that's the way it was a few years ago when I worked there, assuming they didn't change it.

So, theoretically (sp?), you can just join for a day, start training and go buy your holiday list. Then quit next day. Heh....had a few people do that at my store before. I loved them.

You can say that again, i got a sweet deck for my gf car for a crazy amount off. Its really great on accessories, but on software and hardware its little to none.

I think there cost they give you is inflated....I worked there a couple years ago, for 2 months with the sole purpose of buying a tv, and surround soud setup...So I did ok....but it was my belief the cost they give you, is the cost to buy a single unit at wholesale, not the large purchases they make...so lets say a single game wholesales for roughly $40, and then add the 5% for the best buy price at $42...but they aren't buying a single copy of said game, but thousands of them, and so I would assume there cost is lower.

Don't see any other way to put it. cost + 5% MAKES SENSE...

Best thing to buy? Monster Cables 100+ dollars for a single cable, will run you maybe 20.

i've worked at best buy and I must say the discount sucked. companies dont make much on games, i only saved $5 on a new release if I was lucky. I did get a few good cds that were 50% off. The best thing to look for as a BB employee is Dynex brand stuff. I got a $55 webcam for $5 :)

After two weeks of my gf working at best buy, it is my opinion that best buy actually inflates and lies about the cost of items on pay week.

Evidence?

a coke was 51 cents after discount on off pay week, 73 cents during pay week....
