View Full Version : Could CAG make a videogame?

When I looked at varsitygamer's thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68177), it made me wonder if an individual could cut through all the red tape and get a game made. It seemed difficult, but maybe possible, for someone to convince a company that they were a professional game designer, working for some company or other. But what about with a dozen people working together to scam a videogame company? I bet you we could find web and graphic designers, artists, economists, someone to actually interact with the developer: enough people to make a shell company to BS with. Any thoughts?

CAG can barely afford a new server to keep itself alive, so I doubt it.
I used to think about a CAG fighting game...it could have many of the CAG's that are on Zenith's 100 best CAG's or whatever that was called...but that was a long time ago. Still, I thought it would always be cool to have our online personalities fighting it out...

Sorry, let me clarify. I'm not saying CAG itself would be involved, nor would it necesarily be about CAG, just a bunch of people from CAG working to get a game made.

Definitely using DDF as an announcer...
"That move sucked. These fighters suck. This game totally sucks. Send in King Awesome..!" or something to that effect...

Depends on who knows what. Together, yeah, probably. I can script (sorta) and I can skin to a very, very limited degree.. but I think blended together we could, yeah.

It could be a GTA clone but you are just trying to find deals on games, beat up annoying store clerks and horders, and just being an all around devil customer

I was thinking it would be a combination Beat-em-up/Adventure Game/Whatever else.
It would feature:
- Camp out at your local Electronics retailers and beat up Hoarders or fussy store clerks!
- Browse an accurate recreation of the CAG forums - barter with users, argue with P.A.D., and try not to get banned!
- Sell your cheap ass finds on eBay! If you get scammed, jump in your car, drive to the person's house, and beat them, their families, and all their friends up!
- Elaborate Cheapass-Combo system - try to buy as many cheap ass games in a row as you can to get point multiplyers!
- Decide whether to buy online or whether to drive down to the store!
- Real Emotion System allows you to wade through endless menus of speech options to argue with store clerks! Then just press the left trigger to attack them!
- Post your beat Cheap Ass finds on Live!
- Team up with your friends on Live to exploit coupons and sales as much as possible!
Anyone else have ideas?

I miss King Awesome. I just checked earlier today, he hasn't logged in since May when the hate DDF OTT was happening.

It's not unheard of, it's basically what happened with Alien Hominid, released as a flash game on newsgrounds, got wildly popular, then updated, lengthened, and released as a $30 title.

Ozzkev, Onetrackmind, and a couple more CAG Sig Designers could create the cover for it together.

Could we make a game? Yes.
Could we make a GOOD game? Maybe.
Could we make a game that would sell more than 5 copies? Probably not.
As for a fighting game, theres a program called Mugen where you can make your own sprite fighters and load them into a Street Fighter-esque game.

OooH! I want to be in the videogame! I could help! I know a little about programming(very little), and tech stuff in general...but I could be a creative designer!

The GTA idea isnt actually that hard to make. Just make it sorta like Urban Dead. For those that havent played it, its a free MMO about zombies, but its flash based so it can run in most browsers.

Aite, I've been thinking about it, and based on your guys's thoughts got an idea, just let me know if I've totally gone off the deep end. Ok, so GTA, free-roaming city idea, and your goal is to collect rare games. So, you could have a mission like, Best Buy's having a sale, go kill all the hoarders and take the games for yourself. Or, like, someone calls you, tells you there's a rare game at a pawn shop, but as you get there, someone else is leaving with it, and you have to do some kinda car chase.
My other thought is that as you collect games, they give you special moves; like if you pick up some Sonic game, you gain a turbo run move. Or Pilotwings gives you a plane to fly. And maybe you could play these games in game? I dunno, these are just thoughts, let me know if you guys have some feelings.

... i would rather prefer CAG to make a game NOT based on CAG... but whatever.
I've actually been trying to pull a team together of people to work on a game. I'm currently working with the Toque Game Engine (www.garagegames.com) and need people to work with to get a project rolling. I already have a couple of ideas that most people may like, plus the Torque Engine can be ported to the Xbox with given time... and if people were to upgrade to the Torque Shader Engine, then we could actually port the damn thing to the Xbox 360 (yes, THE xbox 360...) very easily. If anyone is interested let me know (though I think I have to clear out my inbox sometime soon)

Someone should make a CAG game, even just a short, crappy 2-minute Flash game.
However, the ultimate CAG game would have Xbox Live support, and all types of genres in it... RPG parts... survival horror parts... etc. And the fighting engine would be the classic AKI wrestling engine. Each CAG would have a custom theme song, too. Guaranteed best seller! :)

Making games and playing games are two seperate things. They always stress this.

if anyone wants something really easy to work with for making a game, google "gamemaker"... get the program and post what you made here if you make anything ;)

Think about this idea, what if we made a Suikoden, but with 108 CAGs, instead of Stars of Destiny.
CheapyD goes on a quest to stop the evil BB from using their newest plan! Only by uniting the many CAGs across the land, will we have an clan strong enough to defeat them!

That garage games site seems interesting. I'd love to find a way to just make my own 2D homebrew shooters for PC or possibly DC in the future.

yes they could, but everyone on these forums would wait till they could get it at the CC $5 sale.

Someone also showed me a link to a way to make games via Python, www.pygame.org .. certainly not as polished as the garagegames stuff, but this is free and Python is pretty easy to use... Looks like you could make some decent 2D games... not so much with 3D, though... so you might have to make your Best Buy level much more like a Gauntlet level/game with sales reps spawning from areas like ghosts, a nice sound voice over that says "(player name) needs Cheap games, badly"..

i can contribute my drawing skills.
Here is a recent example. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/newtikki/obgyn.jpg)
I draw a strip for our campus paper. Anyway, if a simple 2d fighter DOES get underway, I'd be down to help out. This would be a pretty sweet collaborative project.

to everyone interested in anything 2d oriented:
http://www.gamemaker.nl/ is your friend! use it! easy as hell!
I'm down for a fighter if I can get someone else to work the logic of the basic game flow... I was going to do it earlyer in Gamemaker a while ago, but alot of work needs to be done to get a fighter made.... a shooter on the other hand is almost too easy with gamemaker...

I suppose, but everyone who does this sort of thing, even as a hobby, has to start someplace at some time... my games may suck, but at least they'd be my sucky games.. I might opt for the Python option I posted simply because it is free and I already know python..

Not to beat a dead horse, or revive a dead horse, or whatever, but I just had an idea. http://gc.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=5883. For those of you too lazy to read it, it's basically this anti-gaming lawyer (Jack Thompson) who's kind of insane offering to donate $10,000 if the videogame industry makes a game like GTA, except you go around killing the people who make violent games, the people who sell the games, the lawyers defending these people etc etc.
Anyways, I figure this might be a good project to work on. Would probably be fairly simple in 2D. Plus, it would totally piss this guy off and make him put his money where his mouth is. Thoughts?

I'm possibly up for it... if the guy sticks to his words, then that'll make us $10,000 richer.
