Hey all,

We've been kinda into speed runs as of late, and in that we came across this little gem. It's "tool assisted," yes, because it's the only way this could ever be done. This guy is playing Mega Man X and Mega Man X2 at the same time, with the same controller... and far better than I've ever played either of them.

Video is near the bottom of the page.

Just curious on people's thoughts; thought some on here might find it interesting.

Someone on that site actually did a speedrun of Out of this World. Anyone who has played that game know just how impressive that is. I don't think I even made it out of the dungeon at the beginning.

I know it must be cool but a lot of the videos on the site are "computer assisted" or patched together frame by frame... it just seems less impressive to me...

Actually, all the videos on that site are tool-assisted. Read this page (http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/WhyAndHow.html). If you watch some of them you should be amazed, IMO. Just because they are tool-assisted does not make them less impressive - they are doing things that are practically inconceivable, and you would still NOT be able to do if I gave you the same tools, most likely.

yeah, but if someone handed me a guitar I wouldn't be able to play it either - there's a million things I can't do. Editing game footage on a computer isn't really on my list of impressive feats I guess... even though I'm sure in the right circles it is quite an accomplishment...

Ah, I see the issue. You didn't read my link and are viewing these in the wrong context. They do not edit game footage at all. They use an emulator to slow down the game and play it at very slow speeds so as not to depend on reflexes.

No cheat codes or anything of that nature is used - those emulator play files are actually just very long sequences of button presses which can be fed into the emulator to recreate the play-through. These play-throughs are on the real game (emulated) and could in theory be achieved on the original hardware if a God-like being with perfect timing and reflexes was playing the game. The skill is in figuring out exactly the fastest route and how to utilize every little nuance and even some bugs in the game.
