So you've all heard people complain about EB Games, Gamestop, and Best Buy employees giving bad advice. I actually overheard this today...I guess it was only a matter of time:
Some guy working for Fedex was in the store and he asked about the upcoming Xbox 360. The gamestop employee told him that it was totally overrated. He told him not to bother (buying/preordering) one because the PS3 is coming out soon after. According to Gamestop dude, the 360 "doesn't compare to the PS3" at all. "you should have seen the game footat of Killzone and Metal Gear 4. It blows away the Xbox."
I heard everything, by the way, because I was at the counter checking out the GBA games. Anyway, just thought I'd pass this on. Seems kind of dumb since they could make a lot of money off the 360.
Needless to say the Fedex guy decided to "wait for the PS3."
** Note ** I have nothing against the PS3 and I'm sure I'll get one eventually. I already pre-ordered a 360.

When I was at EB last week paying off my 360 pre-order, the guy behind the counter talked a guy out of buying 2 PSP's for his kids.

in some ways thats cool---psp is geared more for the adult gamers. kids will be more happy with a DS plus they'll pay less for it. they could almost get two DS for the price of one psp---and they can share games on a DS with one cartridge.
so if i'm thinkin' of the customer, i would've point out what is beneficial for them---instead of just thinkin' of makin more money for the store.

Instead of telling us, you should have told the guy at the counter.

I've heard much dumber things from game store employees, but it is strange for someone in that position to talk down any system. He should tell the Fedex guy that the 360 is going to be incredible, then a few months later when the same Fedex guy is back in his store making another delivery he could start talking about how great the PS3 will be. Maybe he's just a Sony fanboy.
I once heard a Best Buy employee tell a woman to buy a PS2 for her boyfriend because it was "much more powerful than the XBox, and it was going to have better online games". To be fair, this was before XBox Live had really established itself as the best online option, but still.

They're supposed to just be about doing/saying anything to get you to put money down for a pre-order right?
"I want to preorder a dinosaur."
"You'll have to put $5 down."
Except now I actually want to go into Gamestop and try to preorder a dinosaur. Just to see what they'll do.
No.. wait. They'll probably just assume I'm confused and put me down for a dinosaur-related game. I'll have to come up with something even more arcane; something so totally improbable as to never be available for purchase in any form.
I guess I'll preorder a Phantom.

I refuse to purchase any next generation system until I see some proof that I'll actually enjoy it.

I think that these salseman might honestly believe what they are spewing off. There is one thing to be said about fanboys: they usually have significant knowledge about what they are talking about. But fair, unbiased, rational, they are not.

I try to avoid conversations and eavesdropping at my local Gamestop (I'm in there on average once a month), but I'm continuously surprised by how behind-the-curve their sales reps are on news. I'm talking 'plastered-all-over-the-home page-of-IGN-and-Gamespot' news, not the esoteric stuff that can only be learned on super-secret message boards that you need to get invited to. The customers, even the 'Comic Book Guy'-looking ones, are predictably even more unaware. Let's not even mention the Mike Jones or Everlast lookalikes that are just there for the latest EA sports game.
***Speaking of these B&M misadventures and misunderstandings...I saw a post here yesterday (can't find it now) about some guy (read: kid) who claims that he preordered a 360 at an EBGames and they're now making him get a bundle.*** A bundle at a B&M EBGames?? Wait...what'd I miss? I have one preordered and partially paid for at my local Gamestop, and they've told me repeatedly that they have NOTHING to do with the website bundles and vice versa. Since I'm an "X-Files" fan, I'm always skeptical and paranoid, though. I keep imagining a bait-and-switch in the eleventh hour, something they were planning at corporate HQ all along.
IF this were true, wouldn't the websites be exploding with protests about such duplicity? Did this guy/kid get duped by another amoral store manager? Is this an early leak on some very bad news that was supposed to drop in another week or two? Is this EBGames only? Already debunked bulls***?? Anybody?

This is kind of OT, but I found it funny that a mall security guard came into EB one day and asked how much the PS3 would be because he wanted to blow some off on eBay and make money like many did with the PS2.
and they can share games on a DS with one cartridge.
Is that option for all games? I know PSP supports it for Burnout and Namco Museum, Burnout alone is worth it.

I've mentioned tales like this to the one, lone, single Gamestop manager I'm friendly with. He had a Ninendo rep in his store (Secret shopper, not with the usual "rep" getup and material.) and one person came in and asked for several Nintendo games and a Game Cube (Not the secret shopper.) and the GS employee said the Cube sucks, it doesn't have this, doesn't have that, insert your favorite Ninendo criticism here.
The Nintendo employee was so furious that an employee was disuading sales from people that WANTED to buy a Cube he/she called GS's district manager and tore him a new one. The employee was gone by the end of their shift.
People like this have no business working gaming retail. Message board fanboy trolls should be left at home. Just because you pick up a Dual Shock 2 controller every day doesn't make you an expert on every game you don't play or competing system you don't own.

You know what is funny is that I have heard so many people say they want to pre-order the PS3 and the employees laugh because we don't know when it is coming out.

Something I don't understand is the fact that we don't allow multiple threads on the same topic (say discussion of Socom 3) but we allow 50 (pointless) EB/GS threads at a time?

It never surpises me how ignorant minimum wage store clerks can be. You job is to make the store as much money as possible by selling as much product as you can. If a customer clearly wants to buy something, why in the world would you try to talk them out of buying it?! That doesn't make any sense from a business standpoint.

To answer an earlier question, I work at an EB and doubt that there is any way that they are making all pre-orders...or any pre-orders at all for that matter...bundles. I haven't heard anything about this at all, and it was probably just a store manager duping some kid. It's unfortunate, but it happens. What wouldn't surprise me would be if the extra 360s we get (if we get any at all) are sold as bundles because every year EB does this "holiday bundle" business where they package a system and a bunch of things together. I can see this happening with the 360. Oddly enough this is also a practice being taken up in other places I've noticed, namely Best Buy and Hastings.

Ha! I wonder what his definition of "game footage" is. I could film myself doing a sheep up the ass and it would be just as valid "game footage" as the PS3 vids.
