View Full Version : Will 360 be a hot item for Christmas?

Yes yes, I know we here are all vehemently against hoarding and profiteering here, but you know you have to draw the line somewhere. My question is, do you think that the X-Box 360 will have any sort of additional second market value this holiday season beyond the MSRP? All game stores around here have long since stopped taking pre-orders and claimed to be filled up untill Christmas, but will the 360 appeal to kids who will convice their parents taht the 360 is the must have toy, or will it just be out of the price range for most gift buyers? Despite the fact that I do have a midnight pre-order for the 22nd guaranteed, would it be a wise investment to wait outside Wal-Mart with the huddled masses to snatch an extra console or two for eBay, or would the profits to be had be so minimal that it would not be worth the time and effort?

:dunce: of the year award goes to spmahn, beating out the previous owner, who asked if Halo 2 could be played on the 360.
How about you leave that extra 360 for a guy that isn't a jerkass and actually wants one.

do it fuck the kids and hoard all the 360 and make parents like mine pay 700-800 dollars on consoles and go hungry for 10 months!!

I say hoarde away! If you can make money on the secondary/eBay market I say do it.
Why people here have a problem with profiteering I'll never understand. I'm firmly against the practice when it comes to penny guides but there you're talking about making $5-10 on eBay as opposed to a few hundred. For a $200-400 profit I'll take all the slings and arrows you wish to throw my way on a message board.
I'm just not confident enough that the 360 is going to be as sought after as the PS2 was and the shortages will be nowhere as severe. You didn't see a big secondary market for Game Cube, Xbox or Dreamcast consoles so honestly I think you're taking a chance shelling out $400 hoping to make a profit.
However if there is a secondary market that develops I'm definitely going to cash in. I have always been good at finding and getting hard to find retail merchandise during 4th quarters and making my Christmas buying cost very little out of pocket.

It's really hard to tell. It's pretty risky. I can guarentee it will be a hot item but its up to MS whether or not there will be enough units to go around. IMO, its not a good investment. There is too much of a chance that you will end up at a loss.

I'm going to try and pick up two and see how the ebay market is. If they're selling high then I'll sell, if not I'll just take it back to the store.

How are you taking a chance? Worst case scenario is you sell it to a friend for your cost or simply return it to the store for a refund. The only thing you'll be out is the time spent waiting in line.
I'm planning on buying an extra 360 and trying to make a few bucks on Ebay. I have 1 or 2 friends who are going to do the Wal-Mart thing for a system so i'm going with them. We all waited from 11:30 till 6 am to get a PS2 at launch and we had a great time hanging with all the other people waiting in line. I sold a PS2 for $800ish shipped at launch and sold my opened and played system for $600ish about a week later and the guy drove almost 3 hours one way to get it. Both people were very happy to get them even for the jacked up price since they were impossible to get where they lived. The $800 system went to a lawyer in NYC and the guy who drove up here to meet me was from BFE and they got like 2 systems in there town.
-Do I think the supply/demand/price will be as much? no way
-Will there be a market on Ebay? i'm guessing about $100ish profit including $ from inflated shipping, at least for the first 4-5 days before people actually get a feel for the availability.
-Is it worth it to make even just an extra $100 or so? hell yea, money for nothing since I'm going up there with them anyway.

I actually thought some more about this last night, and I've concluded that as far as scalping goes, this is actually a different situation. These aren't penny guides that have no value, or q stockpile of old games that Best Buy arbitrarily put on clearence. you've had months of oppertunity to pre-order a 360, if you truely wanted one that badly, you would have done so, so it's not like by scalping these things, you're taking anything away from other gamers that really want the system,.

I think you will be able to make a good deal on them...If they are sold out at all the places that take pre orders, you are left with a limited number of stores that will be getting them in and selling them...I think you can make a good deal of $ on it on ebay, hell the guy selling 250 mountain dew every10minutes codes, wants .45 a pop...that is $112 to possibly win an xbox 360

What you fail to realize is that nearly every other hoarder on every other site has already thought of this well in advance. It wouldn't suprise me if some people (read: fatherofcaitlyn) didn't already pre-order about 10 systems just to bank on eBay alone.
There will be a flood of systems available and you will be lucky to get over MSRP on eBay due to all the hoarders that will try to sell these things.

Secondary market value really just depends on how many Mircrosoft ships to the US territory. That is not a value anyone knows at this point, even Microsoft. Yes there are guesses, but that is all they are-guesses. Personally I think demand will vastly outstrip supply and you will have them going for over a grand in early/mid December on ebay. However, there is always a chance that it won't be as popular as expected (not really likely), that Microsoft could be lying about how many are in the pipeline (to artifically inflate demand-y'know, take a page from sony's book), that other territory ones could be converted to US and shipped here (like, oh, say, when it sells 5 copies in Japan [to be honest, I don't know how feasible this is, but if it is possible, I can almost guarentee it will be done]), or that the second and future shipments are bigger and closer to the first one than they are leading on. I actually think it will do decent in Japan (not great, but a hell of a lot better than the first one), but I don't think there any chance in hell that they will sell the estimated 1.3 million units going there in the first shipment in a year, much less in a month. Hell, if there is ANY way around the regional coding, you will probably see Japanese units on ebay cheaper than the US ones.

I heard since it's a worldwide launch, there might only be 350,000 in the first initial shipment. not a huge # if you ask me. and Only 1 more shipment before christmas. There is a high probability for profit to be made reselling.

Allright, well additional question then. WHEN do we guess the best time to sell on Ebay will be? Right away? Closer to Christmas?

Closer to chrismas but not too late. Just watch ebay. You will know when people are getting desperate.

either right at launch when they start to sell out or about a week before christmas when they're sold out. It's possible to make more at christmas.

Moutain Dew winners get their 360s delivered on saturday the 19th, the public release date is tuesday the 22nd. You can't send it till monday and even then if you sent it overnight they'd receive it the same day as everyone else so dont expect that HUGE premium like i first thought there would be. Even if the system came out on thursday or friday you know these idiots on Ebay would pay hard to get the system even 2 days earlier than their friends did.

It's all about supply and demand. The demand will surely be higher right after launch, if no retailers have any to sell. You should post any extra systems right away to get the maximum return on investment...

With the original Xbox it was better to put up the auction and have it end right before the release date. I tried to sell mine the day after it launched and I didnt get too much profit as opposed to my friend that did the previous. The Hype itself and fear of shortage itself will drive up the price

That's not a bad idea. I won one through the dew contest... I might have to do that. We'll see... I could alway set a high reserve or something too.

Unless the 360 comes with a coupon for home heating fuel I will say it won't be a huge deal.

That's very unlikely considering all the preorder sellouts and that approx 350,000 only will be distributed initially in the USA. It's mostly due to having a Global launch.

I doubt 360 will light the xmas season on fire. No, I perdict this coming Xmas season to be an all out, balls-to-the-walls war between PSP and DS. DS already has the strong sales and promise of the big N titles, while PSP has that 1337ness factor to it and is sure to gain sales through GTA:LCS alone.
I would be absolutely shocked to see the 360 break past 3rd place.

Well, handhelds seem to always sell better so that's no surprise. That doesn't mean that the 360 won't have shortages... I don't know too many frat boys who're going to buy a handheld instead of the 360.

Can't get burned when you can always take the 360 back to the store for a refund.

exactly
The 360 launch titles are not very impressive so unless the 360 has great backwards compatiblity, I see a lot of people waiting till early 2006 when the better titles become available. They have not even given a solid release lineup which is a little suprising since the system is a month away.

the release list that has been confirmed (12 games)...they have the sports covered with ea games, a racing game...several fps that look ok to great...an rpg...they have it all covered, and they all look better then the ps2 launch lineup, and remember how hard it was to get a ps2 at launch and the prices that were paid..
