a 5500 will not run battlefield (5700 and up for Nvidia).

Actually a 5500 will run Battlefield 2. Any nVidia card from the 5200 and up will.

Granted you wouldn't want to run it on anything less than a 5700.

Yout best recommendation for bang for ther buck is the new Sapphires X800GTO2's. they can be found for around $200-$225 and can be software modded to an X850. Which is the high end of last generations ATI cards.

It's not in sock but sign up for auto-notify.

So how about a Radeon 9600? Are they any good? Do all OEMs have similar performance? (IE a Saphire 9600 equals an ATI 9600?)

OEMS have similar performance. Actually I think Sapphire is the buiilder of Retail ATI products. They just also sell them under their own name.

Performance is practically the same.

Those games you want to play are huuge resource hogs, you are going to have to shell out more money than it seems you want to spend on them. A 9600 will not really cut it, except maybe on the lowest settings. Of equal importance, esp. for Battlefield and WoW is RAM, at least 1GB necessary. A 9800 pro is probably the best "budget" value (it's what I have and plays all of those decently.) GeForce 6800 line or ATI's X800 or better will keep you closer to the cutting edge for longer. I'm expecting to find an upgrade absolutely necessary next year.

if you don't mind a refurb for that same price you can get the AIW version of the 9600.I have a barebones ATi 9600 and can run every game out there. Can't run them at real high resolutions, but nothing really looks all that bad. The only thing about the 9600 is it is about to be put out to pasture as newer games don't look very good on it. They run, but not as well as I would like

If you can wait though I would recommend getting a card on Black Friday. I got my 9600 two years ago for 70 dollars after rebate and graphics cards always seem to have really good deals on Black Friday. I plan on snagging a new card on Black Friday
