Here is a thread just for us Michiganders to talk about the stores in our area that have good deals. Post any Mom & Pop Stores too so we can find the best deals. I need help gathering a list so I will update the OP from time to time. I will try to list all of the stores in Alphabetical order by City.

Not really great, but the K-Mart in Farmington Hills next to Worst Buy had some PS2 games for $5.99, including Dead to Right and The Getaway. There were a few more at that price but I forgot what they were.

I remember that place, still have a business card I picked up. I was only in there once, but was impressed. They had a ton of import ps1 games at a time when I had just modded my playstation. It was like a more hardcore gamer's version of a Funcoland.
As for other stores, there are the Blockbusters with Gamerush stores and in SE MI there are flea markets like Dixieland in Waterford and Gibraltar in Taylor and Mt. Clemens that usually have a booth or two with new and used games. There is also a Hollywood Video Gamecrazy store in West Bloomfield at Haggerty & Pontiac Trail.
It's surprising how far one will drive in the traffic & road construction we have here just to save some $$ on games.

The gibraltar in taylor has got some very good gaming stores, 3 or 4 if I remember correctly. I found Thousand Arms for the PSone there for ten bucks. Gibraltar is definitly recomended, also its located near a gamestop and an EB!

play source was awsome. I went there at least every other week. Loved it. But then both stores just kind of closed suddenly, no going out of business sale, not much warning, just bam. I wonder what they did with all those extra games? And speaking of it, does anyone know what happened ? Did they move, set up shop somewhere else, etc?

Not really.
Gibraltar has really dried up in terms of good deals... now you're starting to get "collectors" trying to sell thier games at a premium, and only want to deal with PS2 and Xbox games.
I used to be able to go there and pick up early PSX RPGs at almost silly prices (Suikoden 2- $5), old hardware (Odyssey2, Atari, etc) for about 5-10 dollars a console, and every so often a rare gem would pop up.
That's hardly the case anymore... you'll rarely see a random person show up that doesn't really know the going price of what they have.
I blame the mainstream acceptance of Ebay... 5 years ago, I used to be able to pick up 2-5 uncommon or rare games a week for under 30 dollars.
Now, I'm lucky to see a game that's reasonably price there at all.

Game Spot in Westland reminds me a lot of the small independent shops I saw in Japan. The owner is Japanese, so I guess it makes sense. Definately overpriced though. Now that video games are so main stream, there aren't that many place left other than the usual chain stores and the few other smaller stores already mentioned. I have heard that sometime early next year some of the Best Buy here in SE MI area may begin taking game trades. I wonder what kind of values they'll offer.
While we're talking about our old favorite shops that no longer exist, does anyone remember "My Games People Play" located in Waterford along M-59? This place was great. They opened during the old NES days and closed midway during the PS1 era (too many robberies and a blockbuster opened next door). They had 4 TVs set-up and would let you try out any game, kept a call list for popular rentals letting you know when it was turned back in, and was the first place I ever saw used games being sold. My favorite part was that older rentals were 99 cents, new releases were $2.99 for 2-3 days and you got a free rental for every 10 games rented. The 8 bit days were so much simpler and cheapass.

Hell yes, the owner's name is min and a complete ass! Import games are way way way over priced and i'm scared to trade in anything there. They wanted $10 bucks for madden 06, 2 days after it came out. a friend of mine wanted to trade it in there, no can do now.
but I got a universal PSone from them for $50 with a brand new screen and the box. pretty good I guess...

my ps2 will boot however i think the optical drive got messed up hardcore. when i moved up here i opened my door to get my stuff outta my car, and the ps2 decided to take a swan dive. i bought that mug new and kept it in perfect shape. 0_o

Kind of off topic but still on topic...
Anyone who lives in Kalamazoo/Portage area, there is an old Kmart on Westnedge right on the main strip across from the mall and NO ONE buys games there. Always tons of rare stuff. They even have a nice selection on ps1 and dreamcast games last time I checked. Some of their stuff is overpriced (even the stuff that is listed as clearance on the kmart clearance thread, maybe they didn't get the memo?) but there selection for older/rare games is pretty nice.

I got the newest Microcenter ad in the mail a few days late, NBA 2K6 for PS2 or Xbox is only $29.99 now (started on the 17th actually) through the 30th, plus you get a $10 gift card when you buy it. The ad didn't mention if the GC was given instantly or through a mail in.

I used to go there all the time. At the end, I missed a huge going out of business sale they had. 80% off everything. Fuckin sucked missing it.

I got the newest Microcenter ad in the mail a few days late, NBA 2K6 for PS2 or Xbox is only $29.99 now (started on the 17th actually) through the 30th, plus you get a $10 gift card when you buy it. The ad didn't mention if the GC was given instantly or through a mail in.

play source was awsome. I went there at least every other week. Loved it. But then both stores just kind of closed suddenly, no going out of business sale, not much warning, just bam. I wonder what they did with all those extra games? And speaking of it, does anyone know what happened ? Did they move, set up shop somewhere else, etc?
I think they just went under. I had no idea it was coming - a month or so before the Troy (?) store closed, a sign appeared saying that the owner was "on vacation." I don't think they ever came back.

Hah.. true. Michigan is a great state, but we're really struggling with the unemployment rate right now. Is it still the worst in the country? I wouldn't want to lose my job anytime soon, even though I can't stand it.
Oh, and I agree about Game Spot. Sometimes you can suss out a good deal, but it's really difficult. You can find imports and rare games there, but you'll definitely have to pay for them.

There was a cool little independent video game shop called Video Games & More in Flint that repaired all systems, installed mod chips, and had tons of used games for older systems (not just current gen). Got one! I got to my Gamerush at 10 minutes to 10. There were about 3 other people waiting in their cars. The store opened at 10 and I was the only one who was waiting that was picking up a 360. One woman waited to see if they had any for sale and another of the people waiting was an employee there to get his preorder. No lines, no fights, no flu, and was at home by 10:20 playing Project Gotham.
As a side note, the 360 is amazing. (Though I'm playing on an HDTV). I find that I keep pausing NBA 2k6 to look at the players and even noticed that you can see the screws and screwdriver slots on the rim. Also, XBOX LIVE seems to work a little faster at connects.

On 360s I called a bunch of stores in the area about them today. The only one that said they would be getting any soon was one of the Targets I called. Looks like if you want one, camping for BBs second launch event is going to be necessary. No one had any in stock.
On another question, anyone know if any gamerushes in the same area have actually gotten any more 360 games in? They were like empty when I was looking to buy some games before my 360 broke.
Update- Found one circuit city that said they are expecting some in before christmas. Probably only 5 or 6 and to call back in a week and a half. Which, no surprise, is about the 16. I wonder if CC is going to try and do something like BB is doing with their second launch thing. Just with a lot less consoles.
Also, their is a post in another thread with Wal-Mart allocation numbers for the next few weeks. Anyone get a hold of any walmarts that expect to get their 3 in this week?

Do you mean for rent at Gamerush? The couple stores I looked at haven't had too many copies available, and most have continuously been rented out. I did manage to snag King Kong for rent yesterday though.
Side note: WTF @ $8 rentals now?! Also, you HAVE to have a credit card approved in order to rent 360 games, and it cost me $1 for them to do so. So the game was a Total of $9 to rent. Still, it's better than paying $60 for King Kong.
Also, I notice that it's a 5-Day game rental. Didn't they get rid of the late fees, so we can now keep them out longer? So what's the latest I can return the game without any additional fees?

Are you talking about the one on Corunna Rd just west of Linden? I scored so much retro stuff there. Man he had everything from Atari to Vetrex systems, carts, and controllers. I'm still kicking myself that I didn't stock up on some of the rarer stuff before he was gone.

Yeah, I got mine at midnight through preordering at Gamestop. It would have been completely painless but somebody that is mathematically challenged miscalculated the costs of the 360, so everyone who prepaid still owed $1.50. Nope I mean to buy. I know it was so wierd. I had $150 in store credit at Gamerush and the only thing I could buy from them was a play n charge kit and a 1600 point marketplace card. They never got any of their normal PD0, even had it predorder, as of last thursday still hadn't gotten em, finally canceled my preorder. They were sold out of controllers and COD2. I wanted to give my business to Gamerush and had to go to Bestbuy instead. It was really wierd.
Does anyone have any Family Videos near them? I noticed at the one by me they have 360's for rent along with a bunch of games. I'm sure there is a deposit for renting but they have pretty good prices on rentals.
$10 a month and you get 1/2 all rentals. It's worth it if you plan on renting some games and a movies a lot. $3 to keep a game for 5 days? Not bad at all.

I guess Blockbuster is losing its edge if they can only get 5 systems at laucnh at the few Gamerush locations they have. Accross AA/Saline Rd. is a Target with NO clearance games at all, and a Media Play that's going out of business. That's where I picked up my 360 on launch day. They received 96 bundles! It's the busiest Costco in Michigan -- it's their Michigan flagship store, so when they get more bundles, it'll be there first.
BTW, the Costco bundles are a deal. It's $470.
Premium pack - $400
Extra wireless controller - $50
Charge & Play kit - $20
Kameo - $50
TOTAL: $520
So you're saving $50 bucks with the Costco bundle. The controller, charge & play kit and Kameo are all packaged separately, so if you didn't want them, you could try to exchange them for something else at a different store (Target, Toys R Us, etc). But Kameo is an underrated game... I had a lot of fun with it, so I think everyone should keep it!

Umm...
It works on a 360 and not a Gamecube? :D
But seriously... Yeah, it is a bit pricey. It's pure quality, though. When people say it might be the best controller they've ever used, they're not kidding.
One feature it has that the Wavebird doesn't is the auto-connect feature: It will automatically detect and connect to whatever channel is available. The Wavebird has the dial on the controller that has to match up with the sensor in the controller port in the Gamecube. Yeah, not a big deal, but it's nice.
It's definitely worth the extra $10 to get the wireless instead of the wired.

It should. Give them a call just to make sure. If anything, Calanders went to %35 off, Action figures to %25 off, Mage Knight to %25 off, and Statues to %20 off. Revenge of the Sith mini's booster are mark down again to 9.99.

So this is probably a lost cause... but I recently decided to try and pick up and Xbox 360, thought I had one through gamestop.com but it got cancelled. Has anyone in the southeastern Michigan area seen any on store shelves or know of any place (other than Best Buy) that's expecting a shipment soon? Any help would be really appreciated!

Anyone here work at Meijers? I would like a lookup of an item and need to know what you need.
The meijer I visited yesterday had Piranha E Foprce Paintball Gun combos kits at $109 from $179 clearanced but they were all sold out....
Everyone should check around. The eforce is a pretty good gun.... Some websites prefer it over the Cocker etc.

Here's a question I haven't seen anyone ask: Is there actually going to be any 360 stock in January? Everyone is kind of assuming you will be able to get one post-christmas. But I have seen nothing anywhere that indicates M$ has fixed their supply issues. So for any workers out there, any news on January shipments at stores?
Meijer on Tittabawasee in Saginaw has a decent selection of clearance games right now. I picked up Riddick, Kingdom Under Fire, Project Snowblind and Punisher all for $10 each. I was going to get Unreal Championship 2 as well but the only copy they had was all cut up with a knife.

I'm getting pretty tired of the 360 "shortage," and I'm quickly losing interest in the console. It's been weeks since XMas and I still have never seen one at a store in my area (Lake Orion/Rochester/Troy-ish). I'm probably just going to forget about it and wait for something else.

I can tell you that I work at Best Buy in Midland, Michigan and I work in the Media department, I would say that we get probably 10-15 calls a day asking if we got any 360's in stock. Some people want core's and most want premiums but even after getting weekly shipments in, there is still a definate shortage and the demand is still there. People want them for birthdays, use their gift cards, you name it. So yeah, just a bit of a heads up. We finally did get quite a few play and charge kits and wireless controllers in stock though.

We've got so many conflicting reports about that from our customers...and even people that worked with the company.
As far as i know, the main guy was in very bad health, handed the store over, the second guy had some personal troubles, sold %90 of the inventory to some guy from Marquette with the intention of opening up a few months later. No re-opening yet.
Personally I think we should open a store up there. It wouldnt have the back issues that CM&C had, but were pretty damn good with the new stuff.

That's what I was saying, I just didn't want to get too specific. I know as close as 10 days before they closed Dennis and I were talking and he said he was hoping to open up shop down the street (closer to that high school towards Grand River I believe) and I offered to help with a website or email newsletter or something like that for free.
I do know that in the last week there I bought stuff with a credit card, and the charge showed up as being from a sporting good-type store in a not real close city. I'm guessing that was a business owned by Marquette guy.

I found a bunch of clearance stuff at the Commerce Township Target on Haggerty. Most of it was on an endcap facing the back wall near the bikes. Here's what I remember.
PS2 Vewtiful Joe 2 - $7.48 (at least 2 left)
PS2 Sega Classics Collection - $4.98 (at least 6 copies, some were in the opened display case also)
PS2 Star Ocean Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - $9.98 -same places as above, however they had easily a dozen copies if not more. I think there was both GH and non-GH versions but I won't swear on it. They were also bundled with a disc in a cardboard sleeve attached to the back of the game case
PS2 Resident Evil Outbreak - $9.98
PS2 Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 - $9.98
PS2 Jampack 13 demo disc - $2.98
Xbox Punisher - $9.98
There was also a Vietnam game, I don't recall which one or if it was PS2 or Xbox. That was $7.48 or $9.98.
Several others that I don't remember including at least one more Xbox game and a GCN game, if I think of them I'll post.

Oh Spotted One, question. How much are Marvel Heroclix? I'm guessing they come in booster and starter packs. The site wasn't that helpful. I'm just talking about a random booster pack. The figures would be used for display purposes since space is at a premium and the few action figures I have are now in storage.
I could care less about actually playing with them or trying to put my yet-to-be concieved child through law school. Thanks.
SpottedNigel
05-11-2006, 08:00 PM
The packs are 7.99 for 8...I think. Not at work now so Im not %100 sure. There are also special starter packs for Marvel and DC that are 12.99 or 13.99 and actually show most of the Clix you'll get (pre-set popular characters). We also have a few hulk and a few spider-man freebies left over from old handouts.
JSweeney
05-11-2006, 09:49 PM
The best thing to do for heroclix if you only want them for display purposes would be to visit one of the local sports card shows or comic book shows (some comic book stores will have singles as well).
The characters that most average people would want are usually done as commons... and I've seen common heroclix sold for as little as 10/$1.

Mine in Ypsilanti seems to do it from time to time but not always. It pisses me off, honestly I think it doesnt matter if they have the equipment alot of times you just get lazy post workers not doing their jobs. This is again why gamefly needs to put up an option to just select when you ahve shipped your games, trust your paying costumers.

From 8/8-8/13 you get 20% off your first purchase when you apply for a Meijer card.

Just in case anyone is interested, the Mammoth Video in Commerce Township on the corners of Commerce and Carrol Lake road is having an sidewalk sale. All their used PS2/GCN/XBOX games are $8. The only things that caught my eye were Halo 2 (lots of copies), a CastleVania game for PS2 and Psychonauts. Lots of other games there (probably 200 total when I was there).

All the systems, games, and accessories are 15% off and we have 9 Xbox 360's for $340 if anyone needs one. We have all the new releases through the last week of July so you can get some games on the cheap as well.

If you have a Gamerush near you they have the 12 Month XBL Kit with Game for only $17.50 on clearance. Also, it is a YMMV on the price match of the receipt because most stores don't do it but some do.

Is there any chance that the clearences go lower than 15% and when would they do that?

They have gone to 20% on some products including games.
Computers are being sold too fast and we wont get any more from other stores. We do have a shit load of monitors and actually have a 17inch widscreen lcd for under $200 with a 8ms response rate.

Damn. I'm at the PSP next door once a month. I'll have to pop in next time.
Is any computer software (not games) being clearanced or is it being shipped to other stores?

Since we went to 20%, a large majority of the software was shipped back to the manufactures since most non-gaming software is issued on consignment. We still have some but not as much as we had a week ago.

Any CAGS wanna hear me on the Radio IN the greater Detroit area(Im a professional Radio Broadcaster) Tune into 90.9 FM between 3-6pm Im the traffic anchor. The reports are Usually at the :20 :40 and :50 Each Hour.
Im also on 107.5 FM The Rythum doing the same thing at :10 and :30 between 3:10 and 5:30. I work for a company which provides News , traffic and weather and have no relation with the stations content. Im also the Fulltime News anchor on WDTK 1400am between 12-7pm. Top and Bottom of the hours. :bouncy:
I'm guessing you're a Wayne Stater? Specs Howard tends to put people everywhere else but Detroit.
I did the Specs thing back in the late 90's and went to class with a lot of people that went on to 97.1. I always seemed to get the christian radio stations, though. Last gig I did was weekends at 1500am (I think!) and I left because that I was my second job - my "main" job was I had just started working for Big Blue making about six times what any other station wanted to pay me, plus OT, bennies, 401(k), etc. Not a hard decision to switch...
I do kinda miss it at times, because it was such a fun job - and most people don't realize that you're usually always busy. When I am feeling masochistic, I sometimes consider looking for an overnight shift in addition to my ~50 hr a week day job.
The funniest on-air thing that ever happened to me was I was filling in on the Fourth of July and while I was on the air, I heard a knock at my door. The person I was filling in for NEVER told me she had scheduled an in-studio guest for an interview and CD giveaway. So I fumbled my way through the interview (asking the most basic questions) and decided to give away a few CDs. I said the fifth person to call would win the first of the guest's CDs...and no one called! I felt embarrassed for the guest and when the phone finally rang, I announced them the winner. (Only to find out later that the station never sent the CDs out to them!)
I know...way off topic (and a several month old post), but sometimes, I do kinda miss radio...

I enjoyed the post. I worked for my high school radio station for two years and we really racked up the MAB and MAEB awards. Being a dj and sports director was a ton of fun and I miss it all the time.

Really? The main (now only) IBM building is right on 9 mile and Southfield in Southfield. I used to work on the ninth floor there until I was trasnferred to a customer account. I loved my desk there. My desk was at the window facing Fox 2 and I would watch the Skyfox helicopter take off and land all the time...
I spent many years though as a "road warrior" before that and also did a lot of POS stuff for Best Buy and Target...things I do not miss at all...

A little late, admittedly, but I got jack. I'm a little short on cash for the next week and I really didn't want to blow what was left on some of the HDTV sales I saw. (However, I came THIS close to buying that door buster one at BB anyway...)

Hey guys, I have a PS3 60gb I would like to sell to a Cagger in Michigan if possible for a local pickup. I live in Canton and am wanting to sell the 60GB PS3 for $860 and avoid the pain of selling on Ebay. I would accept cash and money order only for a local pickup. If anyone is interested leave me a PM. If it works with my schedule, I would even deliver the system.

I'm telling you, try Meijer. Talk up the guy in the games department and tell him to give you a call or something when they get a shipment in. Slip him a 20 if you need it that badly and I'm sure you'll get a call on the next delivery. When Andy Jackson talks, minimum wage workers listen.

Here's a scan for a 20% off at Gamestop (one specific store only). The EB at Lakeside Mall is closing on 1/25 (no, I didn't see any giant clearance/going out of business sales) and on the counter is a stack of these...it's nothing special, just a b&w photocopied printout. Gives you 20% off at the Gamestop in Shelby (45159 Market St in Shelby Township).
Link (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/thekanerobot/misc/ebclosing.gif)
EXPIRES 2/8/07 - Not valid on hardware.
Sorry to see the Lakeside store go, that area of the mall being a game store has been there in one form or another as long as I've lived in Rochester (1990) and probably longer. I guess it doesn't surprise me, almost everything surrounding it has been totally overhauled, and that store was the one holdout. Hell, I remember when that giant food court that's next to it was a giant arcade (Tilt)....that place was the SHIT. Two floors of games at a time when Gameworks wasn't even yet a twinkle in some corporate prick's eye.
Dropped $25 there for a couple used Gamecube games, since I bought a Wii but skipped the Gamecube and I'm catching up.
I'm guessing you're a Wayne Stater? Specs Howard tends to put people everywhere else but Detroit.
Hah, yep. I must have been offered two or three mysterious "traffic jobs in North Carolina" or something similar, but they didn't do dick to help me get something in Detroit - and I graduated from there with honors, it's not like I had shitty grades or anything.
I was at WJR for a little over a year around 2001-2002 (I fortunately knew someone who did sports there and they got me into the newsroom, Specs' placement had nothing to do with it), but they laid off several younger employees due to cutbacks, and that meant I was done there. Really disappointing since everyone from the news director to the sports staff liked me, but what can you do.
I know...way off topic (and a several month old post), but sometimes, I do kinda miss radio...
Me too, but it's too time consuming and frustrating to try to break in in Detroit. I've got shit I need to pay for, I can't risk everything on a bunch of "maybe" opportunities. I'm reasonably content with what I'm doing now, so it never really bothers me too much.

If anyone cares - There are 5 copies of Gunpey (DS) in the Brighton, MI Target for $14.98.
I've never even heard of this game nor seen it on the shelves until Cheapy mentioned it in last week's CAGcast. I thought it was an import only title.

No, Im a rare exception..Im a Specs Grad. They told me outright that id have to move out of state or start in a cornfield radio station to start off. I didnt want to do that so I pushed on locally..I graduated 2 days before Christmas '96 and landed that Job in March of '97. My first radio job was a small country station in Ann Arbor then I was hired in to What I do now since about 1997.
Thats too bad about the Lakeside EB closing...I had no idea. Funny thing is. During 2001 late 2002 I took a break from Radio and worked at that Very EB as the Assistant Manager. I quit and resumed in Broadcasting immediately..Was an interesting little Hiatus to say the least.
I just recently found STEAMBOT CHRONICLES and STREETFIGHTER EX2 new and sealed at the Gamerush on Rochester Rd with a used sticker on them. They had a B2G1F so I got the one 'real' used copy free. That was pretty cool.
