View Full Version : Any solid reasons to hang onto the PSP?
Besides the homebrew and emulators, of course. The way I see it right now, there are like 10 solid DS games out or coming out by the end of the year that I want. The PSP has nothing coming out (short of Katamari, and I can pick up a cheap PS2 for that) that I want. I am a few days away from sticking this thing up on eBay.
I may as well get what I can for it now and wait for the game library to explode along with a price drop so I can pick it up later. Unless there is going to be a Dreamcast emulator for this thing, I don't see much reason in hanging onto it.

the PSPs future looks pretty damn bleak. If I were you I'd do exactly as you proposed - sell now, wait for more games and a price drop later. i have a PSP with 1.5 and the only game i've played on it in the last 2 months is Chrono Trigger.
I'd put it on ebay but it was a gift from someone special so i don't want to sell it for sentimental reasons. so it'll keep collecting dust for a long, long time...
sell dude, don't delay

i brought my psp when i visited my brother, and he was blown away by the graphics and sounds of the psp. he was playing lumines and virtua tennis---two of the best games for the psp. he said he's gonna buy one. I told him to just borrow my psp and rent the games he wants to play and keep it for the next 2-3 weeks. thats enough time to have the excitement factor die down and realize theres not a lot of good games for the psp. hopefully i save him a lot of money that way.
i'll miss my psp for virtua tennis and world championship poker...but i have my DS to keep me occupied for the next couple of weeks.

Sell it! The DS is going pretty strong and a PSP price drop will be in affect soon. The psp isn't selling very well compare to the DS. They where neck and neck in the U.S. but now there is a gap. I read in some japanese mag that the DS is killing the psp in sales and a psp price drop will be in affect soon for the holidays to try and give it a 1up but I don't know if thats going to help. They just need some games now. DS is out selling the psp in Japan, and now the U.S. I guess you just can't beat nintendo at handhelds.

Gran Turismo (If it ever comes out!), 007-From Russia with love, New Final Fantasy game (eventually), FIFA 06'......I agree it is definetely slim. I am into my emulator though and all the other media functions. Right now, as just a game system, I do agree it is pretty slow.

I bought one at launch and sold it to Shadylane on here because there were no games through August. I just re-bought it last night because now the games are coming out. You might want to check out a release list because it looks like a lot of games are coming out over the next few months, and that's not counting movies. I'm glad I bought it.

I just don't think there are enough non-ports coming out for the PSP right now. That's my biggest concern with it. I think there are a decent amount of games for it, it's just that I already own the home console version of just about all of them.

I would sell it and then wait for a price drop and a handful of games you want.
I normally won't buy a system unless there are at least 5 games I want on it or Final Fantasy is on it, I'm a sucker for Final Fantasy games.
I would sell it now also because you can still get a decent amout for it on eBay, But if you wait to long and a price drop happens I think I will be very hard to get your money back.
I'm waiting for it to drop to $199-150 and for Final Fantasy VII (Part 4..or is it 5?). Sadly based on the WHOLE list of PSP games coming out I still can't find 5 that I would want. To many ports, I reather just play the home console versions.
I picked up a used PSP quite some time after the launch and returned about a month later. Right now I think the PSP has to big of a price tag, however I have heard it might drop soon. I know I will pick up another PSP is the next months or so, prob around x-mas, for GTA and Vitrua Tennis. However at the time it was just to much money to have nothing to play.
I wouldn't say sell unless you feel you really feel you are done with it. If you do decided however pm me w/ a price :) .

I am going to say sell it... but remember how much you paid and think about it carefully- it's really your decision.
The DS has a ton of games worth checking out but make sure you'll have time to play all of them.

I said sell it right away but here is another way of thinking of it:
Keep it. Next, think about the money you are saving by not having to buy any games for the PSP because they suck or are overpriced. Then use the money you are saving (say for 3 or 4 games you WON'T buy) and put it towards a DS. Sell/trade the PSP game you have and get some DS games.
In a year, when some decent stuff comes out for the PSP you'll still have it and you can just buy up the new games. That whole year, you'll have fun playing the good DS games that are out now and coming very soon.

I'd wait a little longer. I think that the PSP's final chance at really posing a threat to the DS is GTA:LCS.
I don't really have any interest in GTA. I have not enjoyed the "GTA age" of gaming much.

You must be shrooming. Not only has it been canceled on the PSP, but a rumor that it was being developed for the PS3 is also false. What was left of Makai Wars when Sony decided not to let NIS develop for the PSP, was turned into Makai Kingdom for the PS2.
And cant you just buy a DS while ALSO keeping the PSP? I hear it can play movies.

... really, I say give it one more year. If nothing happens, then you SHOULD have sold it (too late though). Portables have longer life spans than home consoles, so ditching it too early is a huge mistake. It's got at least 5 more years in it and possibly more.
Personaly, if the control issues of Socom 3 aren't a problem, that may be the defining game for the system.

I played Coded Arms for the PSP when I had it and while the controls wern't great I didn't find them as bad as everyone was saying. It brought me back to the N64 days. Anyway socom could be a big hit as long as the mp is good. Heard it's going to have wifi internet acess which is a major plus. *crosses fingers for psp price drop*

Five years into the life of the system and we've got some incredible titles. Hang onto it because you'll just end up buying it again later.

See, but this logic makes no sense to me. I haven't picked up a PS2 yet, but soon would be a good time... I will get it for a lot cheaper than when it launched and also be able to pick up a ton of awesome titles at a huge discount. Why wouldn't I want to sell the PSP now when it is worth the most, and rebuy it when it drops in price and the game library is more established?

I agree. There were quite a few titles shown at TGS that seemed cool to me. Don't be like the stupid fucks who were on here in February and March whining about how they were gonna sell their DS 'cause it "sucked" and didn't have any good games.

That may be, but media outlets have subsequently called both NIS America and Japan only to find out that its news to them. They are reportedly working on a PS3 game but the people that have talked to them, because of the magic of NDAs, will only say thats its not Makai Wars.

Then your logic in buying it so early on makes no sense to me. It's not like you couldn't find a list of upcoming releases on every gaming website on the entire internet. If there are no games that you wanted out now, which you should've known before you bought the PSP, then why didn't you follow your own philosophy and wait a few years and buy it when it was cheap and had a bigger library of games? (Unless you somehow got it for free or something, in which case you should've sold it right away to make more money.)

Yeah but Makai Wars is being brought back to life for the PS3. Sony of Japna confrim it at the tokyo game show.

The TGS reports were what prompted people to ask NIS directly. Unless NIS just wants to keep it secret, I think Sony is just using their name to get attention from their hardcore base. I had planned on buying a PSP solely for an NIS developed (not just published game). I still stand to that, and i still dont have a PSP.

Dunno why you got nothing to do. I got 7 solid titles on my PSP already
Twisted Metal, Virtua Tennis, Guilty Gear XX#reload, Burn out Legends, Lumines, Ridge Racer, Wipeout
Dissapointments were mainly untold legends and bleach.
and plus homebrew? The only thing I'd want to play on the DS is advance wars and castlevania. I sold my DS for a reason, it's simply not worth it. But hay everyone has thier own opinions

I'm the same way. I have a PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PC, and a DS, and the system that gets the most play is the DS. Even when the library for the DS was a bit thin, there were a ton of GBA games to fall back on while waiting on the DS games to be released. Now that there are a good number of quality DS games, I couldn't be happier with the system.
But back to the topic of the thread, that sounds like a good idea. You definitely want to get that money before the inevitable price drop.

If i were you I wouldn't seel it because you will never hear the end of it from your girlfriend. Also the psp does not have a strong library but you can fall back on the mp3 and video aspects of it. Also you should at least wait one more year, the ps2 first year kind of sucked and look at it now there are so many greats games that i can't decide what to buy sometimes. I probably have played the psp for about 20 hours and i got it the first day it came out, but i'll be patient and wait for the games i want. I always get the systems on their first day except for DS, not that i don't want one but i'll wait till it hit the 100 mark.

I' on the fence about this one. I just picked up Burnout Legends and I liked it quitea bit for the first two days. Unfortunately, the XBOX360 release date is looming and I really need some cash.
Its not that I dont like the PSP because I do. I just cant seen anything in its future lineup that warrants keeping the system. While I played Burnout Legends I kept thinking that it was just Burnout 3 in portable form.

I bought a PSP during launch, and sold it about 2 months later. It was hard to swallow the fact that I paid $250 for a handheld. Even with all the functions that the PSP is capable of, I don't think it's worth $250. However, I will buy one again once Sony decides to drop the price to $150 (which probably won't be for a long while). By then, the handheld will probably be improved with a better battery life, and it'll also have a bigger video game library.
Here are some reasons to buy a PSP in the future:
Street Fighter Alpha 3: Double Upper
King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2
King of Fighters (Year unknown for now)
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
and it would be incredibly stupid of SE if they DIDN'T release ports of FFVII or DQ games for the PSP. You know those would be instant best sellers.

I've had both the DS and PSP since their respective launches and, just like PS2 (ironically enough), my PSP has been collecting dust since I got it.
That's not saying its a bad console, however. Its truly an incredible machine and it has great potential. Now if we could just get some more GAMES for the damned thing. UMD movies are swell, but I don't buy gaming consoles to watch movies.
I picked up Taiko No Tatsujin Portable recently which is EXCELLENT and I plan to buy Guilty Gear X2#Reload ASAP. However, after that I can't think of ANYTHING I plan to buy in the next few months unless Capcom puts out its MegaMan/Megaman X remakes, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Double Upper, or Ghouls and Ghosts by the end of the year. Kinda sad, really.
On the DS front, I already have about 20 games or so, and there's at least that many out now or coming out soon that I plan to buy. If you've boycotted the DS for any reason, give it a chance. Its really starting to prove its worth IMO.
