Since the Southern CA Thread is up, I figured it might be a good idea to post a thread for the locals of the Bay Area. Maybe we can do some face-to-face trades, make posts of inventory in various local stores, post any local sales, etc.

I sold a copy of AC/DC's Black in Black (old mastering) for $5 at Amoeba. I had another copy of it; Thats why I sold it.

Since its a popular record, I would think that $5 was on the high end of things.

So... I just moved here (working in south of market, near the Sega building) and I need to figure out where I want to live. What areas of town are fun? What should I avoid? etc etc.
Here is a site that helped me find some good 'hoods when I moved here not long ago. It is kinda cheesy, but very helpful.

SSF isn't too far from SF. It isn't that bad of a drive as long as you aren't going there during rush hour.

Also... Kitaro is in the city. It's up in the richmond district, which is next to Golden Gate Park. Good luck.

This is the first time I've seen PS3s in the wild in SF city proper. I spied a single 20GB model at the Colma Target (Junipero Sierra) last week, but as far as i know PS3s are still a rarity in most of the Bay Area. I was suprised to see so many of them at that BB - it is pretty new and right on the main drag of the residential side of town.

not game related but...

say does anybody know where to get funnel cakes around the fremont area? I used to go to Daly City with some friends now and then and would sometimes hang out at the Qcup there, and they had funnel cakes which were quite the yums. Unfortunately the local Qcup here (in the fremont hub) doesn't sell funnel cakes, and I wonder if people even frequent that location often, since I was there today and it was absolutely deserted (that whole area center alley area seems to be....might have been cuz it was a Tues night though lol). Been craving funnel cakes lately and tried to make some of my own recently, but I completely fail at anything dealing with the culinary arts, so I made something terrible and promptly threw it out lol. I caught wind of funnel cakes being sold at the farmer's market on Sunday mornings, but I was wondering if there was a place that sells them regularly?

On another note though, I finally found out where the Gamestop in that Fremont Hub area is... right next to the Hawaiian BBQ place I go to every now and then! Had no idea...

they have like a bunch of bbq'd beef/chicken, katsu chicken, grilled fish (mahi? i think), burgers with those various meats, some spam sushi (cooked spam on top of a bit of rice wrapped with seaweed), some noodles with those various meats, etc etc

Their meals come with a large portion of meat (and I mean laarge...~1lb or more of meat), two scoops of rice, and a scoop of macaroni.

I usually get the katsu chicken...i like the katsu sauce. They're pretty good but not really something you'd go eat everyday since I get sick from eating too much mac and meat lol

I believe the two ramps that are closed is the one connecting I-80W to I-880S and I-80E to I-580E.

I was out yesterday and even on a Sunday during non-rush hour traffic, traffic going towards that area was really backed up. I don't want to imagine how it was today

Thanks. I'm going back to Santa Cruz in about 2 weeks, so I'll keep checking the news for updates. Even though it doesn't look like the 580E/880E is affected, I would assume (as you said) traffic would be hell because of all the diverting.

Man, that truck driver fucked it up for everyone. Was there an expected time frame for fixing this section of the freeway?

Anyway, this looks like a really useful forum. I have a small budget but always need more games, heh heh. And since I'm just about to finish grad school, maybe I'll actually get a chance to PLAY something this summer.

By the way, on the Hawai'ian BBQ thing, my friends from HI swore to me that L&L was far better than any of the others. I tried L&L, Ohana, and a couple others, and I have to say: they're right. L&L is just tastier and less greasy (though it's still not health food, for sure). I like their mini kalua pork. Tasty.

I dunno. I like Smash Bros., but some of those guys get way into it. I don't think I'm playing the same game.

Those prizes are pretty amazing, though.

I don't plan on going to it. Some people are saying they're going at 7 AM.

Yeah, forget it. I'm not that crazy for the damn game.

So, I decided to go to the Brawl tourney to check it out with a few of my friends.

The thing was located in some bar/club. Nothing special to look at on the outside, but inside, they had a few Wii podiums set up.

Go down this ramp and that's where the Brawl action is. There were eight podiums set up, two people at each one. Rounds consisted of four minute battles and the only stage they could play was Battlefield. It wasn't that the only stage unlocked was Battlefield, it's just that Nintendo made it a requirement for that specific stage to be played, only.

Place was kind of crowded, but died down after each round.

I only stuck around for the first ten rounds or so. I saw lots of Peach, Kirby, Fox, Zelda/Sheik.

The only Dedede player I saw was owning face, along with some Olimar players. Ike was doing alright. Pit seems really good. Pokemon Trainer is awesome, also. Someone I know +10'd a Link player with Pokemon Trainer, haha.

Wondercon was so fun. Great pics!

I didn't see the rest of the Cobras on Saturday. When I first got there I saw a couple of the blue Cobra troops walking in front the parking garage a block away. Awesome costumes.

I saw the Brain Age guy walking around during the day. It was pretty funny.

I do have to say that it was a bit sloppy in terms of how it was run this year. Shutting down the reg upstairs and having everyone go to one of the ballrooms downstairs was annoying. Mostly because that area is really heavy on traffic anyway and making it even more congested.....ugh.

It was definitely more crowded this year than it's been in a while.

Soo.. are we having a CAG meetup? They CAGcast talks about one in NY and Japan. The one in NY is going to be at Dave & Busters. We could do the same but to be honest D&B isn't that great. Last time I went there all I did was get drunk and play Mario Kart.

where's can i find the cheapest rent if i wanna work in the game industry? i'm looking around the redwood shores area. i attended the game developer's conference and most people said i should look in san jose because rent is cheaper there since its spread out.

right now, i kinda live an hour away from san fran in the north bay, where there's not too much video game companies.

What's your price range? Rent is pretty brutal around Redwood Shores and on the peninsula in general, unless you have roommates lined up or are OK living in a shady area. Around San Jose the rent will be better, but commuting to Redwood Shores will be pretty bad. I think Namco has an office in Santa Clara, which would be a little more manageable.

i guess from the craigslist postings i've looked at...around 800.00 (with roomies?) or less would be good. how come the commute will be bad? isn't santa clara and san jose in the same vicinity? thanks.

metaly

I don't know how rent is around San Jose, but it'll be tough to find a place on the peninsula for $800. (Unless you mean per roommate?) When my friend in Ohio told me his place cost him $400, he laughed when I asked if that was per person. :[

Santa Clara and San Jose are close, but I don't know how bad the commute gets that far south.

Yeah, I'm lining up at a GS in the Daly City/Colma area. Might play in the little tourney, too.

Wii+Nunchuk is kind of sketchy, though.

He didn't wanna tell me where he got it.
Lucky we were at a store XD

I heard Wal-Mart is selling them.

What's HIN?

I put down my SSBB preorder the other day, at Toys R Us so I can use my Mario Galaxy giftcard. I'm just planning on showing up sometime during the day, so no lines for me.

Although, it was pretty fun hanging out and playing Mario Kart in the Wii line way back then. Hmm.

I still don't know what to do.
I sorta don't wanna line up, cuz I feel like a loser, but then I don't wanna be driving around looking for a copy :/

Why don't you just reserve it somewhere? I'm not sure when stores usually put in their orders, but they usually order enough to fulfill at least the number of preorders they have. Plus at Toys R Us they actually give you a preprinted card specifically for that game, so they seem even less likely to oversell.

I did, at EB.
How ever, my local store sometimes sell out for the more anticipated games.

HIN = Hot Import Nights

It's in San Mateo. It's basically a car show with import models, with an additional concert later on in the night. The Dream is performing that day. Don't really like him, though. Not sure who else is performing that night. Last year, it was like E-40, The Pack, Mistah FAB, and some others that I forgot. Basically, all the Bay Area artists.

Anyway, apparently the line for the GS I reserved at, starts at 8 PM. Don't know if I'll go out that early to line up. I have to see what my friends want to do first. Really isn't that bad chilling in line as long as you have some friends with you, otherwise it's kind of strange. There's usually some major weirdos lining up and it gets really awkward.

metaly
03-02-2008, 04:47 PM
8 PM, huh? I hope that means they're doing a midnight launch and aren't expecting people to be waiting in line until the next morning... Actually, does anyone know what day stores are actually selling the game? Having the release date on a Sunday is weird enough. I'm assuming stores will have their shipments by then and will just be holding them.

I'm tempted to change the thread title to "

I don't know if those guys can take a joke though.. :)

is ssbb going to be sold out in seconds or something? I honestly didn't anticipate it to be this popular. Or maybe I'm just not hyped up about it. I had it pre-ordered at TRU months ago. I don't really care if I get it a week late or something.

metaly
03-02-2008, 09:50 PM
I'd only be worried about supply if I hadn't preordered. When I picked up SMG at Toys R Us, they were turning away people who hadn't reserved because they "only had enough for preorders." Whether that means they sold all their non-reserved copies earlier in the day (this was around noon) or if it was because they only ordered enough to fill preorders, I don't know.

I'd guess this will be harder to get than Mario Galaxy because it's the one all the Nintendo kiddies are rabid about.

03-02-2008, 10:07 PM
^oh yeah thats right. I got galaxy pre ordered and some people try to come in and buy it but they only had enough to fulfill pre orders. Then again they were offering a $25 gc with it that's a total steal right there. I thought this was the reason why mario galaxy had so many sells.

Anyone else applying for this? (http://blog.capcom.com/archives/971) I wouldn't mind taking a day off work to play Bionic Commando. (Please, let it be Bionic Commando.)

The toughest part is listing the games I've played in the last six months. Am I going to scare them off if I give a colossal list?
