Im about to purchase my third memory card, sheesh would it be so hard for some to just put out 32mb memory card similar to what nintendo did with the 1019. I dont think Ill ever be able to fill that 1019, but some of these ps2 games take up ridiculous amounts of memory, I mean dammit my third memory card, its freakin ridiculous.

Sony doesn't have to so they don't, pretty typical of Sony if you ask me.

HDD baby. I figured it was just as good an investment as buying three memory cards (for retail of $25 each...)

get a max drive, or if you have a psp the max memory manager.

Ditto.
And I can't believe you're complimenting Nintendo on their memory cards while you slam Sony. Sure, they came out w/ the 1019 - but how long did it take them?? I have to have 4 or 5 Nintendo cards at least stacked around.
BTW, what's the size comparison of the 1019 to Sony's card? I was under the impression that the 1019 finally got the GC card up to around the size Sony started at.
One last point...you know, there ARE 3rd-party cards that hold more for the PS2, right?

I have 3 also...but its also my most played console so thats why. I have 2 Sony 8mb ones and that Datel 16mb one which I store files on I doubt I'll be using for a loong time.

Still that one 1019 holds all of my GC games, GC games in general dont take up the ridiculous amount of space alot of PS2 games do, therefore sony should provide for us with a larger memory card. And as for the HDD, WTF THEY DONT EVEN SELL IT ANYMORE!!!! They sold it with FF11 and that was it, if they sold it just as a harddrive I would jump all over it but they just dont. It bothers me because I think of the PS3, its using a memory stick and I have this image of spending around 90 bucks give or take for a Gig stick and then having it fill up and having to buy a new one because the new games will just take up that much. Sure it seems crazy but imagine if that gig stick becomes the new 8MB card, my god the lost cash....I cant fathom to think it.

I have the HDD as well. Which is good since I'm a save whore. When it comes to RPGs I have like 5 saves, at least, for each game. Like someone mentioned, still way better than the PS1. I have 5 memory cards for that.

Just head to TRU and pick up one of those memory extenders. Even if they aren't green tagged anymore, and cost $7, it doubles your memory card space. They've worked for me in the past. Got a 16MB memory extender for like $3 making it a 32MB memory card.
I delete my saves after I finish the game. Or at the very least once I sell the game I'll delete the save. Since I rarely play more than 2-3 games at a time (and limit myself to 3 rotatings saves per game) I don't think I'll ever need more than 1 card *knock on wood* :)
I figure if I ever re-buy or pickup a game I decided to keep after a long time away I'd want to start over from the beginning anyway.
However the Xbox's HDD did come in very handy with Ninja Gaiden. I rented that the week it came out, and didn't complete it over the rental. A loooong time later I bought the game and *bam* there was my save waiting. Very nice. (Although come to think of it I ended up starting over from the beginning anyway...)

I have a Nyko 8mb card for gamecube and it holds 123 blocks, so the 1019 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 64mb.
I have two Sony 8mb cards for my PS2, and I really would like something larger, I bought one of those memory expanders and apparently they don't work with the slim PS2, I tried two of em and my PS2 wouldn't recognize it.

Agreed. Since I play a lot of sports games, when my card gets full, I just throw it on my max drive and free up space. But then you can always go back and get the save if you want to pick up from where you left off.

i dont get why game save data takes up so much space anyways... i mean i can see RPGs to a point... but sometimes its just ridiculous.

i finally gave up on buying regular playstation memory cards and just bought a 32mb mega memory card and I still have a lot of space left. One of the best investments I ever made and it only cost me $20 (some sale at cc a while back)

"If you don't have the PS2 HD, I highly recommend the Datel MAX memory cards..."
(etc.etc.)
I have to eat my words. While some people have had NO problems with these, there have been reports of data getting corrupted, even with these cards. The lesson (although we're getting reamed by Sony on its tiny, expensive memory cards): only buy first-party memory cards or the HDD.
I didn't lose any data, but my 64MB Datel Max card eventually was corrupting every file I tried to copy onto it (from my first-party cards). And this was after 5MB was already transferred. Nothing will transfer off the card. Also, while I was trying to save a 150K save file in-game (not a very large file), it would not recognize the card and left a block of corrupted data behind.
Mine was a piece of junk. Don't risk your saved games. Is it THAT hard to produce reliable memory?

So between the Max drive, the HDD and the Datel max, which would be the better investment? Also I know for some games like Outbreak, having the HDD can help load times but other than that does having a HDD make a difference in other games?

I think Sony deserves somewhat of a break... Nintendo had a 59, then a 251, and finally a 1019. It took them 2 tires to get one that was big enough for all my games (I have about 40 saves and it's not even half full).
I agree though that Sony should release a bigger memeory card or at least make the current one cheaper. At least it's not as bad as the PS1 memory cards... I have 6 ot 7 of those and I still might need more.

I would get the Max drive. The good thing about it is that once you have the software, you can use just about any flash drive in place of the 32 MB one they give you. I broke mine, and now I'm using a 128 MB drive that I bought for like $15. Plus if you play any sports games, you can download updated rosters and stuff using the max drive (the main reason I got it). I haven't used the other two, but the Max Drive is a reliable option.

You don't need to use the HDD bundled with FFXI. There is a list out there of all compatible hardrives that will work. I don't think that getting a third party hard drive is against any rules and it should work just fine.
There are some that work and they are a measly 5Gb and really cheap.
