So I have two original SNES controllers from 1993. All the buttons work except for the start buttons on both. I have to push down really hard to get the buttons to register.

I opened it up and there was some sticky stuff on the board, which I cleaned off with rubbing alcohol. I put the controller back together and tested it. While the buttons are a little more responsive, they still require a lot more pressure than the select buttons.

Is there anything I can do to fix them or are the boards just shot? Thanks for any input.

does the select button work fine? you can always switch them around, I did that with one controller that didn't have a start button. :D

Yeah, the select button works with no problems. How would I switch them? Would I have to make a bridge on the circuit board or something?

Not sure if this'll help or not, but you might want to at least give the guy an email and see what he says.

Thanks for the info, I might try emailing him. Although I think the rubber parts are fine. The select one works fine and I've tried pressing the start button with the select rubber button but have the same problem.

Maybe I'll just order the ones at estarland. It comes out to $16 shipped for two for official controllers.

Dang, that's not a bad deal at all. I might have to do that too. ;) Don't bother with the "new" controllers on eBay. They suck, a lot, as expected.

Yeah, I see what you mean. A lot of them say they're official controllers but when you look at the picture, they look like 3rd party ones.

Thanks for the heads up on this, friend and I ordered a combined 4 controllers, and I got the Naruto Art Book there. No more worries for SNES controllers for a long while now! :)

Now, to find some original Genesis 6 button pads...
