I just upgraded the display driver on my ATI 9600xt and man this is terrible. Every screen is super slow (for any application). When I scroll down on web pages it has terrible a terrible refresh rate and is nowhere near as smooth as it used to be. My comp is now practically unuseable thanks to this new driver. What can I do to fix this??
EDIT: Just to add to the list of problems:
- Comp is going SUPER fucking slow now (i.e. just going to my programs list causes major stutters)
- For some reason I can't even run 3dmark03 any more. The program tells me that my hardware doesn't support about 5 different features even though I was always able to run it before. AAARGGGHH!!
EDIT EDIT: Allright problem solved, thanks for the help guys. I just uninstalled the current drivers and reinstalled them and everything is working beautifully now. I guess there was some malfunction during the last install.

Can you disable the driver in Device Manager and/or install the old one?

just select "roll back driver" in the device manager for the display adapter. (driver tab for the lamer.)

Usually you download the old one and run it's executable in order to install it. Which is why I always suggest you keep ALL drivers you download, no matter how old they are. This would require you to search the card's manufacturer's site and see if they have it avaiable. At worst you might need to scour the net. Or if you have original install CDs, that would work.
If wildnuts's suggestion doesn't work, the next option is to run a system restore. Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. If you choose a restore date (only dates that can be used are in bold) that came before installing the driver, it should take it back to the original. You shouldn't lose files (music, documents, etc) in this process. This is assuming that 1) you are running a newer version of Windows (I think 2000 and above, I know it's in XP for sure), and 2) you have it running (which you should as long as you didn't manually turn it off).
Lemme know if these work or not.

Uninstall the new driver
reboot
reinstall the old driver
Did you change the refresh rate manually on the new drivers? ATI always sets it at 60 and mine was doing the same till I bumped it to 75.

Is 75 a common refresh rate? Does it make a big difference graphically? How about performance-wise?

Generally higher refresh rate is better. If your card can handle higher ones, it helps to use them, especially if you do a lot of gaming.
That's the short answer.

It usually is. Most new cards support 60 - 70 - 75; it all just depends on your monitor. When you go to Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Monitor tab make sure the box is checkmarked for "Hide modes that this monitor cant display" because choosing one your monitor cant perform will fuck you up big time.
Edit: Did you try the new Catalyst 5.9 drivers? I've had them installed for a few weeks and they work wonderful. They finally fixed BF2 and it only took 4 months.
