Does a cd have to match the original key that came with it to complete the install?

The registry on one of my computers was recently corrupted and I decided to just re install xp, I have an xp disc from another computer and my dell still has the cd key sticker attached to the side, so do I need to try and find my original disc, or can I complete the installation with what I have right now?

I've actually have had some bad luck using CD Keys from other copies of Windows XP. I think as long as the CD Key matches the build of XP you have you should be all set.

When I say build I mean:
Windows XP Home
Windows XP Pro
Windows XP Home SP1
Windows XP Pro SP1
Windows XP Home SP2
Windows XP Pro SP2

I'm wondering, aside from those that CapAmerica pointed out, if OEM and Retail version have different sets of keys too. I kinda remember this was a problem w/ some other versions of Windows previously, but I don't recall. Perhaps I might just be making it up.

You can always enter the key you have from the Dell and see if it flows. Good luck because if it doesn't work, it's a pain to match CD keys w/ XP versions.
