Thompson calls on police to shut down Penny-Arcade

Ellie Gibson 12:05 19/10/2005
Notorious videogame critic accuses satirical site of 'criminal harassment'

Anti-videogame campaigner Jack Thompson is making headlines once again - this time for writing to the Seattle police department requesting the arrest of the satirists behind online webcomic Penny-Arcade and charity fund Childs Play.

Copies of the letter were also sent to various US websites and a scan can be found on Penny-Arcade, itself. In it, Thompson claims that PA has "decided to commence and orchestrate criminal harassment of me by various means."

This, according to Thompson, is because he appeared on the CBS programme 60 Minutes to discuss a wrongful death lawsuit he launched on behalf of two Alabama police officers and a dispatcher, "who were shot in the head and killed by Devin Moore."

Thompson claims Moore "obsessively trained on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to kill them," before describing the game as "a 'cop-killing' murder simulator."

Thompson makes no mention anywhere in the letter of the fact that Penny Arcade recently gave USD 10,000 to charity after Thompson failed to keep a promise to make the donation himself.

He does observe that Penny Arcade is selling "I Hate Jack Thompson" t-shirts and claims this is "just the tip of the iceberg," before supplying an incorrect URL for the site.

The letter concludes: "I look forward to working with your fine police department to shut this little extortion factory down and/or to arrest some of its employees."

But the question remains as to whether the police department ever even received the letter - they hadn't by the time US website Gamespot called to enquire yesterday morning.

Gamespot then received an email from Thompson saying that he had fixed the incorrect URL, and confirming that the letter had been faxed - "They have it now," he added. In the email, he also took the opportunity to describe Penny Arcade as "moral midgets" who saw him as "some kind of pixellated pinata in a game."

"I'm not," Thompson clarified.

Around four hours after the email was sent, Gamespot contacted the Seattle PD again to see if they had since received the fax. Police told the website they had received no communications from Thompson whatsoever.

Penny Arcade business development manager Robert Khoo said the site was unconcerned by Thompson's actions, telling Gamespot: "I've spoken to our legal team this morning and every one of his claims that he has made is pretty ridiculous, especially given the fact that he's a public figure."

"His grounds for harassment, criminal harassment, is pretty silly. He puts himself out there as a public figure going up against the game industry. Does he really not expect that the game industry's going to fight back?"

This isn't the first time Thompson has tried to get the police to come to his defence. Earlier this year he discovered an AIM buddy icon featuring a cartoon Thompson figure being attacked on BadassBuddy, an affiliate site of Bolt.com. As chronicled on Bolt, Thompson requested the immediate removal of the buddy with a letter in which he wittily misspelled the site's URL as dumbass.com. Despite assurances that the buddy would be deleted, Thompson went on to request the arrest of those responsible in a letter sent to the New York police department and the FBI. No actions were taken.

You know, I shudder to think what would happen to our beloved hobby if this guy got half his wishes. I'm looking forward to his email, website and any other personal communication devices he owns overwhelmed by spam.

You know what would be great? Get his FAX number and do a fax loop. Basically it's 10-15 pages of paper that you tape together in a big continuous loop. You start the FAX machine and let it run overnight and come morning the fax machine on the other end is out of paper and toner. If anyone had a machine and unlimited LD it's an easy legal prank.

What's even funnier is the letter that he submitted points to pennyarcade.com, which is not the website. Penny-arcade.com is the correct link. He should probably get things straight before even thinking about taking legal action.

It's so funny. Everyone's turning on him and thinking he's a crazy old bastard (which he is). I hope he sees this and just gives up, but I doubt he will. He'll continue whining. I should probably edit out the comment 'crazy old bastard', he might try to sue me.

He was probably 20 something when the 2600 came to market. The dude is in his 50's. If he's not, he sure looks like it.

Penny Arcade has an update about him appearing on CNN last night. I wish I had known this, I might've tuned in to see the lunacy unfold. It seems he was taking aim at the new Blitz game, citing that the NFL wouldn't allow their name to associated with the game....couldn't possibly be because EA has exclusive license could it?

Aye, this was being discussed in the top I started about Jack. At the time of the blurb on tv there was about 4-5 of us all making quick posts in the thread, and I brought up that exact point. Looks like Gabe picked up on it too.

So, not that I'm a bastard person by nature...

Well, okay, I am, but despite that, I sort of hope his office gets hurricane'd. Not such that he's in it at the time, or that his house and well-being get destroyed all together, but maybe just enough to shut him out of the public eye for a few months. In the meantime we can all make mods called DAY OF DEFEAT: JACK THOMPSON VS. HURRICANE WILMA.

I'm baking the cake!

You don't think that Jack is loving every minute of the attention he is getting? He is an attention whore who will do or say anything to get his name in the news so that he can remind everyone that games are bad.

If you really want to hurt Thompson stop giving him so much press coverage and the attention he wants. ALL of the gaming media that continually makes him a story every other day are playing right into his hands.

Does anyone know how to send a fax over the internet?

I remember seeing a free trial for an internet fax program in one of those pyramid schemes.

I dont think the gaming community can continue to ignore this man. As long as the mainstream media listens to him, its a problem. And ignoring isnt going to make it go away.

The Penny Arcade forum effort to defeat him is gaining some ground.

I called the FBA, and I was on hold for 20 minutes, and once I got a rep, as soon as I said Jack Thompson, she sighed loudly and goes, "Dear Lord, what has this man done? That's all we've heard today all day long!" and I told her that I had faxed a 3 page letter detailing the exact complaint, and she said that it would help alot and she will go get the fax. I'm on hold again.
Followed by She recieved the fax, and personally told me that atleast 2/3 of that letter is news to her! I shit you not!

Shes forwarding my letter to her supervisors.

We've got a lot of people contacting all the media outlets they can, and the Florida Bar Association, in every possible form.

Quak:

Here's something that says you can send faxes with Windows XP without need of additional hardware/software:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/crawford_02october21.mspx

Never tried this myself, and I haven't had a phone line in my computer for 6-7 years now, so I don't know how great this works.

http://www.efax.com/en/efax/twa/page/homePageFree

Try using this. They give you a free phone number and you can send faxes as attachments in email. This service also has the delicous tidbit of being anonymous. The number is not listed anywhere, you can't do a star 69 or reverse number look up on verizon.com, 411.com or any other service. I use this for business quite a bit and it's a great service for legit uses as well.

If you cut and paste 100 pages of text and 1,000 people also did it his fax machine would never stop going.

1172 South Dixie Hwy., Suite 111, Coral Gables, Florida, or phone him at 305-666-4366

Call his office with a call block and tell him you're calling from (Insert your local TV station call letters here and wish to get his fax number so you can send an article you'd like him to comment on.). A publicity whore like this won't be able to stop himself or his employees from falling for this.

Once someone gets this number, post it. Post it here, IGN, gamefaqs, eurogamer, gamespot etc and make his fax machine unusable.

I get it now....Jack Thompson is really a comedian whose performing some kind of reality-based satire skit...er....wait....no......he's just a very troubled man with a bad case of little big man syndrome.

Thompson claims Moore "obsessively trained on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to kill them," before describing the game as "a 'cop-killing' murder simulator."

NO YOU fuckING DUMBASS, MANHUNT IS THE MURDER SIM. dude doesn't even go after the right games

It just pisses me off hearing about him. It's all so lovely.

At this point, the nerds swung into action. Penny Arcade forum members wrote, edited and sent letters and faxes to the Florida Bar Association detailing Thompson's activities and urging the review of his license to practice law. Jack Thompson has already received a reprimand by the FBA for his antics in 1998, and according to a spokesperson, the letters and faxes have been received and forwarded to the disciplinary committee.

Ignoring him and having the gaming media not report on every stupid email or threat he makes are two different things.

Not to mention that reporting what he does is hardly going to stop him - unless he is caught in a criminal scandal - which is not likely. If you want to stop Jack you need to educate the public about gaming so people can see him for what he really is.
