I HOPE its NOT a console. I love my DC more than any other system, but i do not want to see them fail. and they would fail. They dont have the $$ of either sony or MS, and dont have the console record of Nintendo.

I'd rather them continue making good games and not blow money on something thats really cool yet no one will buy.

It's called hype. Sega's notorious for it, and regardless of whether or not it's the Matrix Online, just be prepared for a huge letdown. Everybody's so excited about a new console or a handheld or a merger, but I think it's going to be something much more mundane like a game title announcement.

Does anybody remember the rumor about the Xbox being backwards compatible with Dreamcast games a year before the xBox launch ? They should have done it. They'd have probably sold a lot more consoles and a buyout of Sega would have given MS a lot more game development resources. I had to get it when it came out even after being very disappointed with the Saturn. The DC was a huge disappointment. The games were slow to come out and very few in-between. I am glad Sega is exclusively a 3rd party developer...but I am somewhat disappointed in that so far.

They jumped ship! Nobody baught it cause they said they were dropping it! It was really slow though. I loved the controler with the vmu that was cool but not used enough to make it really cool. I liked that when you played football they couldn't see what you were picking cause it was on the vmu. There was a lot of really breakthrough games cause of the DC though. Shenmue helped to create Streets of La and dead to rights. If sega had stayed with their products they would do better. They said they were pulling out of the DC and it soon could be found in any Eb/ videogame store. They jumped so everybody eles did too.

they jumped ship because they knew there was no way in hell they could survive aganist the PS2. I bought one when it first came out and was never disappionted with it (my least favorite console of all time remains the N64). I played so much Marvel vs. CAPCOM 2 there is no way I could hate it.

I did sell it to get GCN games though, and only recently got big into the DC again. Mainly because I have become obsessed with fighters. The DC and Saturn have become favorites not because of SEGA games, but CAPCOM and SNK games.

I can tell you why. Because Nintendo singlehandely revitalized the gaming industry. Most people thought video games were done, but Nintendo knew better. Nintendo executives have a lot of pride in what they do. They believe they are still the leaders of the gaming industry. It's this reason why they will go down to the death before they become a third party.

Also, I don't think they want to have to pay royalties and be under the control of another company on what they can publish and develop.

Furthermore, when platform companies become third parties, that just is one less competitor against the industry leader. And when there's no more competitors left, it becomes a monopoly. Then the product becomes stale because there's no competition for the industry leader and no real reason for it to continue to innovate. They can do as they wish and know consumers have to buy their products if they wish to enjoy whatever product they love.

It's this reason why it's more important than anything for Nintendo to stay profitable and continue to push other companies to do better, because in the end, it only benefits us, the consumer.

Actually, releasing an upgrade was in Sega's plans from the beginning. If you go look back at some of the DC's history you will find it. It was also reported in ODCM.

Also, the Dreamcast is STILL the only system with an internet browser. And it was like four versions of it. Talk about innovation. The Dreamcast, I believe, is the most innovative console that's ever graced our gaming hands.

I was actually talking about console companies having to innovate more because of their competition. ABut I still think Nintendo is pretty innovative. They were, afterall, the first company to introduce handheld-to-console connectivity. Although Sega kinda did that in a very small way with the VMU, I still give the credit to Nintendo.

But yes, I agree with you that Sega is very innovative, which is why I believe it would be better for us to have them making hardware again. It would be pretty nice for Sammy to be backing Sega with its money.

I Realize they make money from the console but the actual money making comes from game sells. It cost millions to produce and develop a new console. If they cut the console making and just make games their profits then go to millions more just because they are not using that money to develop. Thats why I think they wills top making consoles. Personally I would like to see Sega enter the PC gaming market. I'm not talking about console ports like crazy taxi or virtua tennis but new concepts. I remember a while back ago they had some original pc games that weren't all that bad that were made by Segasoft. Also a few years back I remember playing the pc demo for PSO but never saw a commercial release for it. But this is probably less likely than them putting out a new console.

This could be what the Segaton announcement is. That Sega will release a limited number of portable Dreamcasts again and maybe they'll release a new game on the system.

I think it's probably suprised Sega by how much of a cult following the Dreamcast has gathered.

I was mildly stoked waiting on the various hardware manufacturer press conferences on Monday and Tuesday. Nothing truly earth-shattering came of them though, and I was left mildly disappointed. E3 2004 will surely be remembered as the year of the portable gaming device. With Sony's PSP announcement and Nintendo's DS unveiling, this year's show has already had more than its fair share of portable goodness - but Sega's shock revelation that it is developing its own device must top the lot.

However, according to Yuji Naka, who unveiled the machine to shocked games industry representatives at a Sega E3 press briefing held just half an hour ago, with their new creation (code-named 'Prometheus') Sega are not attempting to directly compete with either Sony or Nintendo. 'Prometheus' is instead being billed by Sega as "the videogame equivalent of the iPod", and with the machine's pearl-white colour scheme it is obvious to see that the company wish to invoke the design-chic of Steve Jobs' ultra-popular music-playing machine. The similarities do not end there, however: rather than purchasing games from their local GameStop, gamers will download 'Prometheus' titles (called 'gamebits') from a special Sega online service which, Sega said, will operate in a similar way to Apple's iTunes software. With the use of a supplied USB cable (also white) users may then transfer up to twenty 'gamebits' on to their 'Prometheus' system's 15GB hard drive for play any time, any place.

The 'Prometheus' is roughly the same width as a CD case, and half the height. It will operate on a rechargeable battery (as yet unconfirmed as being lithium) which Sega say will last up to twenty hours. In a surprising move, in order to conserve battery power, the 'Prometheus' screen will not be backlit: a decision which we believe likely to alienate many gamers, and one inexplicable in lieu of recent technological developments which should negate such problems. Is this really a good plan for Sega? I don't see any room in the market for another handheld with SP, DS and PSP already flooding the market. I'm also not to hot on the (as I read it) pay to download a game and play it for a period of time.. it ruins any collector's interest, and you can't go back and play a game 6 months later unless you want to pay for it all over again... All in all.. I'd say poor plan.

That's not a big deal. They've been making games for the GBA since the beginning. Handheld support for the next generation was a logical step. Not explosive.

It was on Gamespot and on a bunch of other sites. Don't know if IGN or Gamespy ever picked it up, though. And, I don't think there was an official press release from Sega on the matter. I kinda thought this was their press release, though.

It may be pure coincidence but I thought I'd let you know something I heard the other night. She told me in no uncertain terms that there was no way she would take me.


I had been a little overserved myself so instead of throwing wine in her face like I do with most women who turn down my extravagant requests I entered into an argument about the coming Playstation 3 and Xbox 2 announcements. At this point she mentioned to me how new console announcements are passé since there were four big console makers and they were always announcing something new. Sensing a small victory I pounced, “there are only 3 console makers!” Like a mother scolding her son she replied, “no, there’s Sony, Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft.” “Sega?”, I questioned, “but they’re out of the console business?” She stopped what she was saying and looked at me, then mumbled something about how I should forget what she said. Relishing my perceived victory over her supposed video game industry knowledge I let the Sega remark slip thinking it was brought on by the liquor. After seeing your post about a possible Sega announcement I figured I’d drop you a line. I agree with your opinion that a Sega announcement is unlikely, but seeing your post and hearing this woman’s drunken remarks is a little interesting.

The Phantasy Star Universe trailer contained only prerendered CG footage starring characters and environments that looked stylistically similar to those seen in the recent Phantasy Star Online games. We observed one character fighting monsters with electro-blades, another animal-like warrior speeding through a desert environment, and a purple-haired girl with some resemblance to Phantasy Star II's Nei as we watched the trailer.

The Phantasy Star series began eons ago on the Sega Master System. After four popular single-player RPGs, the series took a multi-year hiatus and then reemerged on the Dreamcast in the form of Phantasy Star Online. Despite the series' recent focus on online play, Sega representatives are mum about whether Universe will center on off- or online play. Since the combat in the game is real-time instead of turn-based, it could go either way.

We'll bring you more details on Phantasy Star Universe as soon as they become available. In the meantime, keep an eye on GameSpot for the game's first trailer later today.

Sega's e3 lineup this year is pretty weak. The only thing that was slightly interesting is Sega Superstars. Its sad though that they have more games announced for cellphones than the GC and GBA combined.

Yeah. Sega really has made some damn good consoles. Some of the best. But there's been too many dumb execs making too many dumb mistakes for Sega. Honestly, I believe they need to stay third-party.

Even if they announced they were going to start developing a new console. It would either be way late and after all the other companies released theirs, or it would be really rushed and wouldn't be very good.

I would like to see all Sega games under one console, just for convenience sake, though. If that happens, great, if it doesn't, that's okay, too. I just want Sega to continue making money and to start bringing some of their cool-ass older games to the table.

Sega offically announces Matrix Online deal

After weeks of wild rumors, the so-called "Sega-ton" announcement proves anticlimactic.
Two weeks ago, wild rumors of a resurgent Dreamcast raged after Sega sent out word that it would have an "explosive announcement" at this year's E3. However, that news detonated over the weekend, when Sega posted large banners announcing its deal to publish The Matrix Online all over the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Nevertheless, the press gathered at Sega's E3 today so see if the so-called "Sega-ton" had any more bang left in it. After a brief delay, the lights in the Sega booth dimmed and Sega of America president Hideaki Irie emerged to announce…a deal with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Monolith to publish the Matrix Online.

Speaking to the audience, WBIE's senior vice president Jason Hall said he considered the massively multiplayer game "the fourth movie in the series" and hyped up the detail of its urban setting. Them Monolith CEO Samantha Ryan appeared to present a so-called "super brawl," in which a group of Monolith staffers duked it out inside the Matrix Online. Sega will be staging these demo fights throughout E3.

If you didn't have it for it's short existance or have never heard about it, the premise was this: You paid like 10 bucks a month, and you had unlimited access to 50 games that Sega picked out each month. That's where I first experienced games like Shining Force, TJ&E, Vectorman...all great games. If they did something like that, but for all their systems somehow...wow...

I dunno. The Matrix Online seems a bit weak to me. The story's over. Neo But I shouldn't say too much about it until I find out more, but so far, I'm uninterested. But this was far, far from an explosive announcement.

If Phantasy Star is just a single-player action game, it will be terrible. But if they plan on returning to the turn-based RPG side, it may be pretty good. But I'd love to see it as a real MMORPG.

I remember reading an article about Matrix Online before before Revolutions came out in theaters and it kind of spoiled the movie for me. Whoever wrote that article let it slip in that the matrix was still in existence after Revolutions.
