As for deals, on new games it's Fry's hands down. But for used games I find the Blockbusters in Oak Hill and over here on Riverside near the HEB/Exxon/Bodega complex to be good.

Just to let Austinites that don't already know about it, there's a newer game store that sells older classic game stuff (as well as some newer, XBOX/PS2/GC). It's called GameOver and is located in that little strip center at the corner of Lamar and Anderson (near where 183 crosses over Lamar, South of the Bingo Hall across Anderson).
It's a pretty small place, but has some neat classic games/systems as well as some gamer related T-Shirts. The store buys older stuff too. It's basically a Mom & Pop (well, just Pop as he owns/runs the store) type smaller shop. So, if you are looking for something of the classic stuff that GameStop/EBGames doesn't carry, ya may find it there.
PS: No, I'm not associated with the store in any way. A local game store clerk told me about the store (he shops there too) and I just thought I would pass along the info for those that didn't already know about it.
San Marcos is close enough. Im in Lockhart and I act like I belong in Austin so you can too lol.
Not sure what Ushicon is but a year or two possibly 3 ago, there was some gaming thing that was done in round rock in some hotel out in the la frontera shopping center that sucked big donkey d. It was neat seeing the display of old school stuff but the game prices for used were hella high and at that rate id just assume go buy a new copy. The free video games were cool and those were kinda expensive as well. I went there with the impression that the advertisement mentioned trading etc etc. The trading with the dealers was basically if you didnt take a pounding in the ass, there was no trade to be had.

I actually went to that. I also was pretty disappointed in the merchants. Free arcade games were cool.

Stink_Pickle/secretvampire,
I was also there. It was called Austin Gaming Expo (A.G.E.). Some of the Atari Age people were behind helping put it on. It was supposed to be more of a classic gaming gettogether for buying/selling/trading/playing older classic games. However, they never realized their advertising (flyers in GameStop/etc.) how many people would show up. It got a LOT more response than they thought it would (especially for the small venue).
Trading did suck ballz. Most of the dealers willing to actually trade were ones that had the classic stuff and were looking for awesome items in trade. Part of the problem was that most dealers of newer stuff didn't know the whole trading thing was going to be such a big deal. They were looking to get paid for stuff and come out with cash in hand (not more merchandise)...lol.
My biggest disappointment was the lack of Dreamcast stuff there. I was looking for some stuff and hoped there would be some there. I basically came out of the show with a free game guide for my wife and a copy of the Dinosaur movie on DVD for our boys. I didn't find jack for myself. Playing the old games for free was nice thou.
I talked to one of the people involved with Atari Age (who still goes/does shows in other cities) about if/when they are going to do another one around here. He told me they want to, but it takes a lot of effort and they just need the time/place to put it together. I never understood why it just "went away" when they had the kind of turn out they did. Austin is full of gamers that would have gone to another one of these things (especially if some of the comments on things like lack of trading/etc. had been taking into consideration).
Here's the link for the website when it was held...

Westlake is where all the rich people live. That's the "best place."
SW Austin is the Circle C area. Suburbia at it's best/worst. It's a large planned community which in the early 90s almost became its own town, but Austin pwned and claimed circle C. Not a bad place to live. I lived there for 3 years myself. It's kinda remote from downtown like Westlake, but it's close enough.
South Austin area is the second nicest overall since it has the most soul. Pretty much any restaurant in North Austin (more richy) is a knock off or copy of a South Austin original restaurant.
North Austin is more spread out and confused, but not bad.
I live in East Austin, where all the "poor people" live. But honestly, it has more soul than South Austin. So many taquerias/bodegas/etc, good times.
Or you could just be a tool and live in one of the luxury condos over looking Austin that they're building everyday for no reason.

Np. South and East Austin or North Central area will probably be the most economically feasible places to live. The North and West/SW sides of town are quite expensive, and for no good reason.

Wow, can't believe I never posted in here. I guess I should venture out of the Deals section of the forums from time to time.
Anyway, I'm in Round Rock... near Dell, though I don't work there.
I've been playing games since before I could reach arcade game control panels (I used to just pull up a chair and stand on it. :) Now I actually own my own arcade games... and a crapload of other games. I think at last count I owned over 1100 games.
Anyway, if you're ever up in Round Rock and you want to talk or play games. Shoot me in email or googletalk IM to robnava@gmail.com.
Some fun trivia about me:
-I have a bedroom completely dedicated to retro video games.
-I own 3 full sized arcade machines: SF2 Turbo, Killer Instinct, and a Neo Geo MVS.
-I played a *crapload* of Quake 3 competitively for about 4 years.
-I will most likely kick your ass at Puyo Puyo, Street Fighter, and Quake.
-I'm not into traditional sports games (Madden, Tiger Woods, etc.)
-I appeared in an issue EGM in the early 90s for winning a Neo Geo contest.
-I run The Jaded Gamers podcast (http://thejadedgamers.blogspot.com)
Just to let everyone know, the OP of this thread ended his run on CAG this way-
