I was wondering, does anybody know how many Nintendo DS and Sony PSPs have been sold. I was predicting that only one would survive but that doesn't seem to be the case since they are aimed at different markets. Is there a website with sales figures somewhere?

Yeah a couple...
DS is ahead by a great deal in Japan
For Japan do Media Create or even Magicbox.com
I dont know of one for the US thats current.
I am unsure of the other territories.
I will leave my personal opinions to myself but I do believe you will see only one survivor in the next year or two.

with games like mario kart and animal crossing coming out this fall, not to mention the new bundles. i would expect to see a DS surge this holiday season, putting it even further ahead... as for exact numbers, some quick googling yielding only old numbers

I read somewhere that the DS and PSP are pretty even sales-wise in the US and the DS is crushing everything in Japan at the moment. I'll try to find the article with the exact numbers for both countries. :robot:

Good God those Xbox sales are even worse than I expected. I haven't seen Japanese sales figures in forever but 10,000 units in a year? That's just embarassing. Then again those Game Cube sales are equally attrocious given Nintendo's relative popularity in Japan.
The PSP and DS aren't going anywhere. They're both going to be around for quite awhile but I think you're going to see a lot of research in the near future that there's a whole lot of adults buying the PSP as portable movie players and aren't buying any games.

Another article on DS/PSP sales in Japan.
http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000837063581
As of the end of September of this year, the Nintendo DS has sold 3.2 million units while the Sony PSP has sold just 1.7 million units in Japan, according to sales figures provided by Japanese games site Dengeki Online.

I think the simple fact of the movies and expensive accessories alone will extend the life of the PSP for some time.
one thing on the gamecube sales is that about a year and a half ago Sony changed the PS2 sales to allow the stores themselves to set a pricing structure on the PS2 system... I partially believe thats why you see such continued strong sales...
Nintendo just announced they are doing the same starting OCT 29th I believe. So Cube sales should pick up from their current price of $129(?).

dont get me wrong GTA will sell many copies and push a lot of systems... but come christmas time when those parents are looking for presents for their kids (who get most of the gifts mind you) and they see 150 dollar bundles of friendly mario kart and nintendogs as opposed to 300 dollar psp + gta, m rated (not that most parents pay attention) i would think that most are going to go with nintendo

I know that GTA sucks, and that parents shouldn't buy it for their kids.
But denying that it will sell systems is just ignorant, the console GTA games sold tens of millions of copies, and as far as mainstream gamers are concerned it is the second strongest videogame franchise next to the Sims.
Yes, it sucks, but it sells millions and it's an exclusive.
Yea, but you are discounting the fact that with this GTA, not only do a lot of people have to buy the game, but also a $250 system. I am not denying that GTA will most likely sell very well on the PSP, but it really can't be compared to the home versions on a CHEAPER system in MANY more households.
I am suprised actually that the DS is doing so well.
I didn't think high thoughts of it, and then I bought one used off a freind for $65 (w/ MArio 64, I couldn't pass up that deal), and I love it. Its nice to see it do well.
Once the PSP goes down in price I may consider it, since it certainly is sexy.....but it is seriously too much money, and not enough interesting games, yet.

actually, I really respect Japan for keeping those sales numbers down. It wouldn't make sense for japanese to like such an american based system so much... just would make sense. Almost like an oxymoron. I like the xbox (not that much, but I like it), so don't take this as somethign negative.
Nintendo really has its base of income from portables ever since the GBA SP was released. It's what they do best.

I agree. For portables, to me it seems the people want games and value for their money more technology in the long run. The Gameboy in any of its forms was never really the leader technology-wise. Whatever version of Gameboy was out, there was always another system with better specs, i.e. Atari Lynx, Sega Game Gear or Nomad, Turbo Express. Heck, the N-Gage probably has better specs than the GBA SP. Nintendo has such a chokehold on the portable market with all its games, brand recognition, and licenses, its hard to knock them off the mountain top.
I like the PSP for what its capable of, but to me its seems like it tries to be too much. The graphics are superb, but because of that, the battery life is nowhere near what you get with the DS or GBA. The screen looks fantastic, but its seems fragile, or at least less durable than its counterparts. And the games look and sound great, but how many are just PS2 ports? And let's not even get into the cost of owning one vs a GBA SP or DS. But to each their own! 8-)

gamespot today reported that sony has shipped 10 million psps worldwide. how many of those have been sold i have no idea. the article seems to imply that theyve sold all the units theyve shipped, which is of course impossible

Keep in mind most retailers are stocking up on inventory for the holiday season coming up. Might as well get them in stock now, while things aren't so crazy.

7 of the top ten games are handhenld Nintendo games. And from looking at these states for the last couple months thats pretty much held throughout most of the year. Connectivety with DS with things a la Zelda and Final Fantasy CC on Revolution just online and no need for them to neccesarily be in same room. Which is likely since DS connectivety has been announced. Man, wait for more news. But just think about it and I think most people will reliaze that nintendo could take back the console throne. Or at least come out about even.

And on top of that the games for the ds are selling on average a lot better as well. This christmas is going to be important though. It's the time when the DS and PSP will have the chance to come out on top. If the ds sells well. Which it might because of Animal Crossing and Mario Kart online then it will come out clearly on top. If the PSP gets a boost from GTA and a few others then they can pull of a balance. And the N64 was a great system. Which I for one played more often the my playstation. Mostly due to Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Starfox 64 and all the other great multiplayer games. Playstation only won because of RPGs. Discounting that it was dam close.
Bit more accurate

well, I just think the fact that the DS is $129 helps a bunch. Then again, I'm sure all the companies care about is making money, e.g., if sony can make just as much money selling a psp at $249-299 as Nintendo can selling 1.5 to 3 times as many DS systems at $129, I suppose it evens out... I don't believe that is the case, but heck, it could be...
bottom line for me, the DS costs $129. if given the guess, I think the cheaper one sells more, a lot more, especially during the hollidays..

Is that what I said? No.
I was merely saying, "Just because N64 have the best-selling games, does not mean N64 was the best-selling console." i.e. You can't draw any conclusion from a games chart. ------>You have to look at the console chart.

True Japan and America are seperate markets and it's not needed. But Sony wins over Microsoft and there main stay is heavy japanese support so it helps. Case in point there current strategy in Japan with 360.
And those are american prices. And at a couple places since launch PSP has been $200 american. It's just not the value pack.
DS was 150. Don't know exact yen. But then they brought in the Play-yan. and it was equal in price to PSP.
19,800 yen or $185 for PSP. and 24,800 yen, or $232 for value pack.
So it's not doubled there pretty close in price. In Japan at least. And frankly you can get a PSP pretty cheap online.
