Hey cheapy and wombat,

I've just started listening to the show and i've started downloading past episodes. I think its great! Anyway I have a ps3 and im getting a 360 soon. Can you suggest any first purchases or must buys for my new 360.

P.S. I'm really hyped about fable 2. I heard about Peter Molyneux making promises he didnt keep for fable 1 but he says now he is only showing features that have been already put into the final game.

P.P.S. Wombat, dont be afraid to get hyped about fable 2.Hype is a good thing!

Hey Cheapy,
Now that the format war is over, I wanted to take a minute to take a look at BlueRay. In the last CAGcast, you said that the visual jump from DVD to BlueRay was not as big as it was going from VHS to DVD. I agree, however, you overlooked that DVD not only offered better quality picture, it also offered more features and usability. Can you remember when it took you 20 minutes to find the part of a movie you wanted to show your friend? Or how you had to turn the VCR off before you rewound, because you didn't want to damage the tape? When special features (rare as they were) either had to come on a separate cassette or after the credits?
But it got me thinking about when I was in middle school and my friend bought the Record of Lodoss War boxed set for $300. It was the size of a house. I think it had about 40 cassettes. Now, I believe the DVD boxed set is only 4 discs and goes for something like 60 or 70 bucks. I'm was a TV studies major in college, and that field really blew up because DVDs made it affordable to own and store. Now BlueRay has been waving this MASSIVE STORAGE in my face, yet I haven't seen them use it to offer TV series. Wouldn't it be great to get entire seasons or even series on one disc? That's a benefit of BlueRay that can be taken advantage of, even to those who have no HDTV sets. Shouldn't Sony or whomever get on someone's ass about this?

Hey Cheapy,

ESPN has reported in the last couple of days that Barry Bonds is saying he will play in Japan this year if a Major League Baseball team doesn't sign him. Right now the only team talking to Bonds even a little bit is the Tampa Bay "Rays", and even they don't seem to be interested. So what do you think of Bonds in Japan? Is the Japanese media on to this already? Do you think the Japanese people would hate him for being a steroid-using cheater? Or just for being a jerk?

Hey everybody, I have a quick and gross story to tell. I was having problems with my PSP, it wouldn't read my memory card. So while taking a piss I took my memory card out of my PSP and guess where it landed. I couldn't flush the toilet to get rid of the piss because that would be bye bye memory card so i had to put a plastic bag on my hand and go fishing. After running the card under the tap, washing my hands and drying it off I put the card back into my PSP and to my delight, IT WORKED! I don't recommend it but if you happen to have a problem with your memory card and a toilet full of piss, you can mix the two together. I know it's gross but I thought I should share my pain (and glory) with fellow CAGs. I also thought it would be something that Cheapy might be interested in as we know that he has done some pretty gross but funny things in his past times (sorry for mentioning that Cheapy).

Thanks guys, love the CAGcast.

This is a question for Wombat

Regarding last week's show featuring Mrs. Wombat...

Did both you and Mrs Wombat go scuba diving, or just her?
Where did you go to learn scuba diving and did you/do you enjoy it?

(I'm big into scuba diving, so I'm just curious)

PS Green Lantern Underoos? CLASSIC!

Hey Cheapy,

My birthday is March 3rd (next monday), and was thinking about getting a psp. do you think I should? or should i get a ds? you can pitch in to Wombat :-P

Hey CAGIronMan, I thought I would give an opinion with your gaming troubles. Getting a DS or PSP pretty much depends on what you really want out of a console. If you want a system with alot of other features as well as gaming then go for the PSP, but if you want a system with a more gaming based protocol then definately go for the DS. If you want more classic games that are alot of fun then go for the DS, or if you want more hardcore gamer type games with better graphics then the PSP is your best option.

I got my PSP about 6 months ago and I still use it alot, but I'll end up getting a DS soon. It just all comes down to what you want out of a system, and what genre of games you prefer. I like both consoles equally so people please don't start calling me biased or a fanboy.

Hope i've helped CAGIronMan.

Hey Cheapy, I have both the 360 and the PS3, and have been through no less than 7 360's in my lifetime due to them breaking. Right now I have an elite and boy is it loud! I used to be die hard xbox but now my ps3 is where I look for all my gaming needs. It is quiet and never had a hardware problem what so ever. My question to you does the noise (fans) of your xbox make you crazy like it does for me to the point of not wanting to play the 360 no matter the game?

Seriously though, have you ever wondered why some of us go bald up top but are otherwise, how should i say, protected from the elements? I'm in the same boat as you and often wonder why science hasn't come up with a way to redirect some of that hair growing action to my scalp.

If there was a way to redirect to your scalp would you go for it or do you like the faux Mr Clean look too much? What are your thoughts?

Hey guys..

As you've discussed on the show before, DMC4's ridiculously long install is basically a result of the slowness of the PS3's Blu-ray drive as compared to a DVD.

Do you think Sony can/should/will eventually just upgrade the PS3's 2x Blu-ray drive to a 4x or 6x? It would certainly improve the load times for games and probably make some hard drive installs optional... at the expense of pissing off the early adopters.

Thoughts?

Here's a question for Wombat (that I think he'll love to answer):

I was a HUGE comic book kid back ten years or so ago until Onslaught came in and ruined comic books for me. I'm thinking of getting back into them but don't know where to start. Is there a series I could pick up to get back into the swing of things? No DC unless it's Batman please :-P

Cheapy....

You named my name in the CAGbag section this week, had me all excited....and then never answered the question :(

So....here it is again :)

Have you ever seen the show on G4 called Ninja Warrior? Besides being quite the crazy Japanese competition, G4 now seems to be more concerned with this type of import game show than actual video games.

On Ninja Warrior, old and young men alike attempt to "defeat" an extremely challenging obstacle course, and on some episodes, not a single person completes the course. A lot of the contestants build makeshift courses in their backyard or at their local park. What do you think about building a course and training Tai to be the next Ninja Warrior?

I'm looking at the Xbox reliability poll, and it strikes me that maybe somebody misquoted whoever gave that 16% failure rate. Somebody had a slip of the tongue and maybe it sounded like 16, but they really meant 60...

While not scientific, I would say that this is more likely accurate for a sampling of hardcore console gamers. You know there are a lot of people who buy a 360 for one game, get tired of that game, and almost never turn it on again. For those people, a launch unit's working just fine.

The next time Wombat's in the room with a Microsoft Exec, I'd like to get a comment on those numbers. :) It really is quite a large sample; well over 1000 responses.

Best piece of advice for Wombat for playing drums on Rock Band…

I read an article by one of the Harmonix folks who's a 'real' drummer, with some tips on playing drums. This piece of advice transformed my drum skills almost overnight.

When playing the kick drum, keep the pedal depressed inbetween hits i.e. keep your foot resting on the pedal, then when you need a bass drum kick, quickly lift the foot up, then put it back on.

It requires you to be a little more forward looking, but it's waaaay less effort on your leg.

Hey guys...great show as always. I'm glad you mentioned Apple possibly moving into gaming and I do agree with you that it would most likely be in the casual space.

However...I sometimes use my Ipod Touch to watch video and while doing so I can't help but think that it has the perfect form factor for a handheld. All it would need is some controls added to the sides of the screen. It's nice and slim and definitely portable. I kind of feel this is where the PSP missed the boat. If the system didn't have UMDs as media they could probably have a similar form factor. I'm not super crazy about not having physical media but with the Ipod Touch already at 32GB and a decent front end like ITunes its hard to deny the possibilites. It seems as Sony is finally starting to move on the PSP store front so could this be the next step?

I think the biggest factor for a handheld is the portability and it would be nice to not have to swap discs. I know some people buy the umds and then dump them on a memory stick via custom firmware...so people do want that accessibility.

If Microsoft was going to do a handheld they should go this route...they already have a pretty robust infastructure so it probably wouldn't be too hard to accomplish this.

I know a big deterrent is also the retail space as retailers frown upon digital downloads but you still have to sell the hardware and you can do your points cards or $$$ amount cards similar to Itunes.

Thoughts?

Hey guys. I was wondering, and would also love to hear from the CAG community as well. Are we just going to assume that the Bourne game is going to be crap because it is a video game based on a movie (and we all know how those games tend to be sooooooooo amazing) or will it be good because I found the video trailers have been impressive.

Also Viking. Crap? What do you guys think?

As far as i'm concerned Cheapy only has a japanese version of Halo 3, and therefore is unable to play online, or what's it all about ? Perhaps i just haven't listened well enough when turning on the podcast, but it seems to me like cheapy at least, haven't event tried the Halo 3 multiplayer. How about grabbing a cheap copy of the US/EU version and try the multiplayer out?

Cheapy,

As you know, we are in the dog days of the U.S. presidential primaries here in the States, and I recently discovered CAG's active (and quite intelligent) political discussions in the Vs. forum. At the same time, I was reading an article about U.S. nationals living overseas and voting in the primaries, and wondered if you had done so? Do you plan to vote in the general election? I personally feel voting is a very important (maybe the most important) aspect of U.S. citizenship, even for those living abroad.

Don't feel obligated to discuss which candidate you favor, though you and Wombat are, of course, free to make endorsements. ;)

this is a question for both of you

About a month ago, I downloaded Rez HD, and I had Rock Band in my drive. As i was ejecting the disk, my 360 red ringed, and I saw a warning screen on the TV. I reset the 360, and it was perfectly fine. I was wondering if maybe some people didn't try to do this and just sent the 360 to Microsoft. I have owned my 360 since about January 2007, and that is the closest I have had with my 360 breaking down.

Cheapy and Wombat,

Do you guys think that some game companies should continue a game series for its fans, despite mediocre sales? Elite Beat Agents and Ouendan come to mind. EBA sold about 300,000 copies which for a Nintendo published DS title is certainly not alot. The series still continued in Japan with a sequel to Ouendan and it sold much more than its predecessor.

As for EBA's lacking sales, was it the idea of secret agents dancing to bad 80's music? The terrible box-art? Nintendo even put out a commercial and promoted DS Download Stations with it. Should Nintendo and INIS keep trying?

Also, I don't recall you two ever mentioning buying or playing these games on past podcasts. If you haven't you must find it somewhere at bargain price. By far my favorite DS game.

Thanks

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

First, I have to give congrats to Wombat on the new baby before I ask a few questions. Since Cheapy mentioned that Tai was starting to recognize the controller in Cheapy's hands and touch it, it got me wondering that if you could pick the first game(s) that your kid would play, what would they be?

What do you guys think of the news that the developers of N+, which has a great and easy to use level editor, had to remove their user-created level sharing network at the last minute because Microsoft feared the dick levels clogging the game's tubes?

And finally, do you guys actually read each CAGcast thread from the first to last post or do you just skim the thread for mentions of your name for an ego boost?

Hey Cheapy D and Wombat. I'm going through some repair troubles on my 360, too. After 20 months it craps out on me while loading a RockBand song. But so far, using the towel trick I've had this thing avoiding death for the last week. But I'd thought I'd like to let you know about the 59% failure rate in question. There is a thing called Survey Response Bias. Where people who actually care will vote. Meaning that of the many who have working 360's didn't bother to vote as much as those who have been screwed.

But anyway, thought I'd use my shitty senior class statistics knowledge.

I've been having so much fun that I'm even considering picking up a real drum set on the cheap (of course) and may even try to take lessons if I can find a way to fit it into my budget. I was just wondering, have you guys ever enjoyed something so much in a video game that you wanted to go out and learn how to do it in real life? Of course, I am not talking about games like GTA or Condemned, but are there any music or sports games that got you off the couch and into the real world for a while?

And Cheapy, I know you do some DJ'ing every now and then, would you be interested in a DJ Hero game? Rumor is there might be one in the works.

With so much controversy about game reviews lately (example: GameSpot- Assassins Creed review) I thought of a suggestion for the Cag Gaming Forum. How about we start our own review system?

First we could start a forum topic for each new game under the conresponding system, add a poll numbered 1 - 10 allowing Cags to rate the game thus giving us an average score/percentage. Then they could post their own review of the game in the topic telling their rating and why they gave it. The info would be useful to other Cags who are looking for fellow mwmber reviews and it could be used in the CAG Cast.

You touched on Nintendo's less than steller online system again in CAGCast 110 and it got me thinking. Is this really a Nintendo problem or is this a Nintendo of Japan problem? We all know that Japanese gamers, as a whole, are pretty "meh" about the whole online experience and Japanese developers are not necessarily known for their robust online options. Hell, Hotshot Golf 5 for Japan had actual tee times for online play that you had to show up for.

The majority of decisions that are made by Nintendo are coming from NoJ. I also assume that Sony of Japan is making most of the decisions as far as Sony's console and online strategy. Is it a coincidence that both companies which are based out of Japan are making some strange decisions when it comes to their online strategy?

I really think that the indifference of Japanese gamers towards online play is what is causing the strange decisions that both Nintendo and Sony have made. Sony seems to be going in the right direction now, but they are facing strong competition from Xbox Live so they almost have to do it.

Cheapy, what is your take on this? Do you think there is any truth to this?

Hey Wombat and Cheapy, have either of you been keeping up with or heard of Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures? It's an MMO coming out for PC and 360 that's supposed to have real time combat, which will hopefully make it's gameplay similar to God of War and less press a button, wait a minute traditional MMO style. Graphically it looks excellent and you can decapitate and even chop off enemies limbs making it even more badass. What are your impressions?

Hey CheapyD and Wombat,
Do you guys take advantage of any of the PSP extra functionality? I've had a PSP for a couple years and I finally figured out how to load movies onto it. (Star Wars: ESB ftw!)

Also, I know you, Cheapy, have a Mac; what are some of the programs you use on a regular basis (outside of bitorrent)? I'm a Mac guy too, and I was just curious.

Cheapy and Wombat,

Now that you have both watched Justice League: The New Frontier (Cheapy I assume you had a chance after you and Wombat talked about it a smidge on Cagcast 110), what are your overall impressions?

While I found it somewhat entertaining, I thought it employed quite a bit of revisionist history about the time period. I didn't read the original comic for New Frontier, but didn't seem as Superman was way out of his normal unerring Reagan-esque Flag-waving patriotism ala Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns and took on a lot more of Batman's normal skeptical MO? I mean Superman is supposed to be all baseball, apple pie, mom, boy scout and America the Beautiful.

I'm sorry I'm very proud to be an American, and Superman is such an identifiable American Icon, I guess I'm a little touchy when an institution like Superman is fiddled with.

Thats my $.02 what are you're thoughts guys?

I really want to thank CheapyD for an excellent week last week, I found the xbox 360 return thing in Japan just very interesting. I have been playing a lot of baseball MLB 2k8(360 version) and MLB 08 the show(just return of the show mode). As a big baseball fan, I am thrilled with both. I also have been playing drakes fortune which is really good that I get from gamefly.

Congrats to wombat to the new member of your family.

My question is in leau of saving money like myself being a cheapass using gamefly is there anything like gamefly in Japan?

I look forward to this week's show.

In last week's CAGcast, you mentioned waiting for the inevitable price drop as a potential way of saving money. Although I agree with the sentiment, it is not without caveat. For strictly single player games, waiting for a bargain is good form (although if you wait for an extremely long time, avoiding spoilers in the VG community can be difficult). However, I will gladly spend the extra bucks for multiplayer games for two reasons: (1) Games can be the "flavor of the month." If I wait too long, and the game doesn't end up with a massive following on XBL, multiplayer options tend to dry up. My friends have moved on. The community at large has moved on. (2) Games that offer substantive upgrades for multiplayer progression (e.g., leveling up in COD4 nets you better weapons and perks) put you at somewhat of a disadvantage if you wait too long. Agree or disagree?

Side note: Congratulations to Wombat and Mrs. Wombat on the impending birth of your first child. You will learn more about life from your baby in thirty days than you learned from your parents in thirty years.

I am noticing a lot of non gaming people around me are buying a PS3 as a blu ray player (makes sense) but they have no interest in gaming. Is that all Sony is hoping for, to say look how many we sold ? What will happen when it turns out the software sales are not supporting the hypothetically large install base? Hey Wombat, I just got done watching the King of Kong and I was wondering why you were being such an asshole to Steve Wiebe. The guy was obviously trying to play Donkey Kong and win a record, but you had to start gathering everyone around to add pressure to his game just because you were jealous that he was getting to the kill round. Wombat - which movie looks better - Iron Man or Hulk 2?

Cheapy - The digital download will never, *ever* replace discs completely. There are always going to be stubborn people, like me, who want a physical disc. On top of that, the incredibly ludicrous handling of the Xbox Live game issues that people like the Shipwrecks have had with their Xbox Live games are always going to discourage people (like me) from buying DLC altogether. For the love of god I still use minidisc!

HEY Cheapy and Wombat. My question is concerning Devil May Cry 4. I recently got this game for the PS3 over the XBox360 version as I like the bumpers on the PS3 better than i do on the XBox360 and bumpers are used a lot in this game. The install wasn't really that big of an issue and of course cuts the load times to pretty much nothing. What is interesting about this is that the PS3 version isn't really that far behind the Xbox 360 version in terms of total sales. Clearly the hard-drive install has not killed game sales on the PS3 version. How do you feel about the hard-drive install and more to the point of my main question, would you like to see more hard-drive installed games? To that point, what do you make of the possibility of more developers going this route in designing their games considering the success of DMC4 on the PS3?? (obviously it would, for now and probably forever, have to be a PS3 thing since the Xbox 360 doesn't mandate a hard-drive).

This one's more for Cheapy than Wombat, I guess. But, I've noticed Cheapy having to get involved with "disputes" within the message boards a little more often lately. So, I was wondering what a normal day for Cheapy includes. Do you wake up in the morning, and instead of getting ready for work a like Wombat, do you say to yourself "time to see what 3am drunken idiot argument is posted on my website that I'm going to have to fix". Or "SPAM CONTROL TIME" !!!

Howdy guys. I got another quickie Smash Brawl question for you.

The review scores for Smash are all very high. The reviews themselves are all pretty positive but a common, partially negative thread I'm hearing especially on the podcasts is that it's very similar to Melee. At it's heart (Hardcore or not) Smash is a fighting game.
How much do fighting games really change? Some fighters go 3D or offer ring outs but some of them don't radically change like that. It seems to me that the head-to-head fighter is a series that doesn't need to change much. For instance Street Fighter series hasn't had anything too radical change that I can tell (as an outsider).

Which has changed more (completely discounting graphics) Smash (Melee -> Brawl) or Street Fighter (II -> IV)?*

addendum: I don't think you guys play much h2h fighting games but which ones would you say have changed more and which ones less when compared to Smash.

*I say Smash. with things like the Smash Ball, tons of new items, and more fight customization types

Hey, Cheapy & Wombat. Now we've all heard Cheapy say on several different occasions that he does much better than Wombat in most Multiplayer Games. but, what game (if any) does Wombat kick Cheapy's ass in?

(and Wombat, any games you play at your new job don't count! i.e., Strip-Carcassone, Naked Twister, etc.. )

By the way, Wombat, you need to get on Call of Duty 4 with the 30+ CAGs that play together every week! I've never had a chance to play with you, but the general consensus that I've heard is that you're not...excellent at the game. So you must prove the CAG community wrong!

Hi Cheapy & Wombat!

Since you are both married I'm hoping you can help me with this question. Did your spouses game -- even casually before you guys got married? How do you get them to allow you dedicated gaming time? Do you often get asked to stop playing games?

My fiancee comes from a country where what little gaming is done is in smoke filled dank internet cafes with no console market. She has no use for gaming at all. I tried introducing casual gaming via the DS as something we could do together, but she handed off her pink DS to her younger brother (who is loving it lol).

Any sage words of wisdom if you had to overcome similar challenges in your relationships?

I have been listening to the cagcast for a bit now and cheapyd often brings up the fact that he downloads movies "illegally". I am currently a college student, and broke at that, and am an avid participator in the torrent world. I am a bit of a movie buff and to be honest I would not have seen a gigantic margin of the films I have seen if it were not for downloading movies via torrents. For one, I could never afford to watch/buy/rent the films that I have downloaded. A lot of the films I download are foreign ones too, sometimes not even available in the states. I do rent films, but mostly if I want a DVD, so i copy them. Now Bluray has been a problem for me, since I cannot copy them I must buy them, which I do, I can't help that, but I'll only shell out no more than $20 for a bluray, typically frpm amazon.com. Now I have recently downloaded a few HD movies, like you have said you have, and have to say, this is the way to go, crisp picture, excellent sound, and well free, except for the extra hard drive space and the fact that it takes a day to DL. Sometimes even getting them early, I downloaded No Country for Old Men a while ago in 720p (3 weeks before the bluray came out) and it was better than what it was at the theatres. I understand that you download Tv shows and movies due to that fact that you cannot watch them in Japan. While your problem is geographical, mine is economical. But I feel we and a lot of other cagcast listeners share a common "interest".

I must admit that I do feel guilty sometimes, mainly when I copy a DVD from one of those $1 machines we have in Albertsons and Ralphs now and returning them on my way back to school the next day. I do not think I will stop doing what I do for a long time to come, since my bank account is down to exactly $354.33, being that $2588 just got removed due to tuition fees for next quarter. It will probably take the MPAA and the CTAA (Chronically Tight Assed Association) marching towards my home with pitchforks and torches to make me stop. Hey! I do my part, I purchase a lot of dvds and blurays, just not ones that I can DL very easily so i don't feel that guilty about it.

My question is, do you think that it is necessarily wrong for an 18 year old freshman in college to "steal" numerous amounts of digital media for his benefiting pleasure? And if yes, why?

Not that this matters, but my overall cheapness in this regard might be due to that fact that I am Japanese and part Jewish. My Father is Jewish, but most people would never guess that since I look mainly Japanese. But with my Japanese genes (technical skills) and Jew genes (cheapness skills), I believe that combo can be very good for using a computer to download free media. "Ninjew" as my friends call me.

Sorry for such a long, rambling post.

What do you guys think of this demo drought we're in, with nothing on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for the past month or so besides demos for the two baseball games that came out a few weeks ago. No demos for Army of Two, Condemned 2, or Rainbow Six Vegas 2 before they came out were disappointing, though I see two late demos came out on PSN today. What games could've benefited from pre-release demos in the past few weeks and what upcoming games do you guys think need to have demos out soon?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

With the recent announcement that Call of Duty 4's downloadable content will come out on the PS3 later than the Xbox 360 (21 days if I remember correctly), do you think Activision is shooting themselves in the foot for potential downloadable sales on the PS3? And are developers who follow in this fashion in the same boat?

With the yen becoming more and more stronger than the almighty dollar, why don't you save some money by going back to the 20 or so games you haven't finished yet like Lost Planet, Half Life 2, etc? You could also stand to stop buying meh titles like Army of Two or Kane & Lynch for $59.99 . You've become more and more like a "what the fuck" gamer than a cheap ass gamer.

Cheapy,
I noticed while stalking your Live profile (for the first time) that you have just scratched the surface of Dead Rising. While I realize that it does not fit everyone's taste, I had to recommend giving it another shot. This is one of my favorite games on any platform. It had a great mixture of laughs, spooks, and memorable moments that simply overwrote any gameplay shortcomings (which I believed to be minor in the first place).

So, unless it was completely not your bag, I'd recommend giving it another go if you find yourself with nothing new to play.

p.s. Regarding the save system: while I recognize the frustration that can occur (of which I have had more than my fair share), it is simply too great of a game to toss aside due to this design flaw.

Cheers,

Yo, Cheapy.

I noticed that in CAGcast 112 you said you ordered the Rock Band standalone game and drum kit instead of the full package, because you already have two guitars. I have to ask, why no mic? Do you already have a USB microphone to use with it, or are you just not interested in doing vocals? I personally find vocals to be the most fun part of the game. I'd think that because of all the karaoke experience, the vocals would be a strong suit for you.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

With last weeks talks about EA considering a hostile takeover of Take-Two do you think games are becoming less original. As a game developer I'm kinda worried, EA seems to be buying almost every game studio under the sun and that seems to me that their will be less innovative games and more prequels and sequels. What are your thoughts?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but let's get it out there anyways.

To Cheapy and Wombat: When your kids are older, say in their teens, will you ever let them listen to the old CAGcasts? I mean I'm sure they'd come across it at some point in their lives, but would you willingly set them up to listen to it? I don't expect you to be doing the CAGcast forever, but I'm sure you'll still have all the files to reminisce whenever needed. The only I really brought this up, was namely with some of the semi-recent CAGcasts, where Cheapy wasn't getting any, and turned to Youporn or whatever. But then again, you could just let Tai learn only Japanese and save yourself a lot of trouble. But even still there's Wombat with a daughter (right?) on the way, but for all I know, you probably don't have to worry about her, unless she mocks the gay job later for all I know.

Wombat + Cheapy

I remember Wombat saying that he has an iPod Touch now and since I also work in NYC and as such I am constantly riding subway trains, I was wondering what kind of earphones/earbuds do you use or would recommend?

Also out of curiosity what kinda of "equipment" do you guys carry around with you when you go out to work or in Cheapy's case out to buy groceries? :P [I usually have a messenger bag filled with a PSP, DS, iPhone, Blackberry, X360 Memory Card (with live profile on it), and a laptop.]

Too bad your youtube account got banned and I'm sure it'll be back soon. Well back when cheapyd's youtube account existed there were a few videos about DS accessories. I recently purchased a DS and already broke a stylus, the tip sort of chipped and now its too sharp to use on the touchscreen. I remember that there was a DS stylus review video, but that was way before I got interested in a DS and frankly only watched because well it featured cheapyd. But now I have a DS and am interested in all things with dual-screens.

So my question is what is your favorite DS accessory you have used, or one that you wish would be invented?

A DS toilet clip counts...

Hey Cheapy and Wombat, with the recent release of The Essential Metal Gear Solid Collection, I was wondering if either of you had any games in mind that you wished were re-released in a collection. Personally, I would absolutely love a re-released compilation of the Panzer Dragoon games from the Saturn era, but I know those games are too obscure for that to ever happen.

I often find myself checking CAG with my palm as I leave work to see if I need to stop anywhere on my ride home and it takes fucking forever to load the page. All that would be needed is a means to browse the deals forum.

Hello to the both of you,

As a hypothetical question, if you were given the chance to create a game (of any genre), what type of game would you create? And for what system? Of course, disregard time and budget. Interested to hear your opinion.

My ideal game for the 360 would be an MMORPG type (much like Oblivion and/or Fable 2) with online capabilities as WoW -- everyone playing on a server or servers at a time. I know that the 360 has some MMORPGs on the horizon, such as APB, but, whenever I think of the term "MMORPG", I think of monsters, magic, medieval times, and the sort. Although using characters like Cops and Robbers is unique, I'd really like a "typical" online MMORPG to hit the 360 -- besides Final Fantasy.

Hey guys.

Listening to the last CAGcast, I heard the Genesis Game Genie audio clip as the show ended. It got me to think, are cheat devices such as Gamegenie, Gameshark, Action Replay and Codebreaker a thing of the past? I know I played a lot of games on the PS2 (especially RPGs) with said devices. Now in this wave of current gen systems there hasn't been one yet. I know that the chances of the 360 getting a cheating device is pretty slim because of the precious achievements and what not and the Ps3 seems to be going on the same route with the Home/Trophy integration. The Wii might be the only console that may be able to pull it off.

And I'm not only talking about cheat devices, but what ever happened to cheat codes? Most games used to have an infinite health/ammo code or a God Mode but now I could probably count in one hand the current gen games that have cheat codes. I know that some would argue that game nowadays are much more easier than they were before or that one is not a good gamer if you need cheat codes but sometimes there are just fun to have. Sometimes you may need them to get through a game that is a rental. Maybe you work, go to school and have a family to attend to. You get the point. I would like to clarify that my complaints only consist of single player games only. I like most people hate online cheaters.

What are your thoughts?

Blackout

Cheapy and Wombat any thoughts on the Rainbow Six Vegas 2 release and the unplayable online on the PS3 version? I picked up the game last Tuesday and the online was smooth. The next day I could not get into any games. I could not host any games. Invites wouldn't work. And by the slim chance I did get into a game, it was a pure lag fast. At this point, I can't play online AT ALL. Single player works fine, but that's not what I bought the game for. Over at the RSV2 forums there are a bunch of pissed off people. I paid $60 for a game that doesn't work and I am getting frusterated that there really hasn't been any word on what the fuck is going on. They say to mess around with your router settings, but so many people are encountering problems that for the most part I think it's safe to say the problem is on the Ubisoft side of things.

If a patch or fix does come out, I'm worried it might take several weeks for it to actually happen. What are we as gamers to do? Just take it up the ass and hope that things like this get fixed/don't happen again? It's still early on in the game's release so I'm somewhat optimistic, I just hope something gets done and those who bought the game don't end up getting screwed over.

It's clear that XBL Achievements have changed our game purchasing decisions. If presented with a choice, most gamers will pick the 360 version over PS3 if for nothing other than the nerd points. With the imminent introduction of "Accomplishments" on the PS3, do you think that such game purchasing decisions will reach an equilibrium?

WHAT IF SCENARIO: What if Sony introduced "Accomplishments" on PSP titles as well as the PS3? What sort impact would this have on the industry?

I think Wombat raised a very interesting possibility with Guitar Hero.

Sony having an *exclusive* Beatles Guitar Hero would be a major, major coup for them. I'm not so sure that Sony would go multiplatform if they had the chance to nab an exclusive for themselves.

I might be asking something that's been asked before, but whatever.

Cheapy and Wombat, I was listening to the Gamer's With Job's Podcast (archived Episode 70) ad they mentioned that maybe we've reached the end of the definitive two-joystick/button controller or mouse and keyboard method of controlling our games. Examples were cited such as the Rez vibrator, the IR controller for PC flight sims and most obviously the WiiMote. Do you think this is the case? If so, how do you think Microsoft or Sony will keep up with the rather progressive stance the Wii took with its control scheme? Of course the PS3 has the six-axis, but it still maintains the original control-pad method.

Your thoughts would be fantastic to hear, and keep up the good work. I was happy to hear Cheapy refrain from making gay jokes last week.

Hey Wombat,

Wondering if you are going to the New York Comic Con (NYCC) April 17-20th? I'll be there Sat the 18th and was wonderin, that if you are going what is on your list to pick up at the show, if you are getting any con exclusives, and what you are looking forward to (I think Ed Norton and the entire cast of the new Hulk movie might be there)? There will be some game companies there so hopefully some free shi will be thrown our way. I'll be the one draggin an unenthused gf along. So you mentioned on an earlier Cagcast that if you are ever spotted randomly in person that a free game will be given up (if they wore the Wombat shirt). So what would a nonwombat wearing shirt spotting warrant?

Howdy CheapD and Wombat

Dr. Mario is apparently the number one puzzle game for a lot of people according to various internet blogs and comments. Personally I thought it was merely ok. Now that WiiWare version is out in Japan videos are leaking and I have to wonder. Do you know how to play Dr. Mario? For such a beloved franchise it's really strange to see players who clearly don't understand the mechanics of the game.

Two leaked videos show players that from what I can tell are trying to match colors horizontally. Needless to say they die quickly.

Hey - any rumors about Nintendo packaging a Wii + Wii Fit bundle when it's released? I'd put the odds at just below 1% because they can easily sell both for full price. However, I personally know several non-gamers who are very interested in the Wii Fit, a bundle like that would push them over the edge into buying the Wii.

I am a big baseball fan and my big game this year was MLB 08: The Show, which i picked up on launch. But a few days ago at my friend;s apartment in LA I played a Japanese baseball game called Pro Yakyu Spirits 4. Its only in japan, so my friend imported it from play-asia. It seems like Japan's version of MLB 08 and was wondering if it was very popular in Tokyo, since it seemed very polished and very fun to play. Its a PS3 exclusive, and the 5th version is coming out soon.

http://ps3.ign.com/objects/883/883109.html

Is there any hype around this game in Japan, since the US MLB season recently started in the Tokyo Dome ( Sox vs A's) and the Japanese season should start up very soon also? Also, was there a lot of talk about the MLB season opener in the Tokyo dome during the past week? I Really enjoyed staying up 'til 6 am pst to watch both games with a few buddies. No worries since its spring break at our college this week.

Also I recently picked up the Pocket Power Pros 10 DS game that you recommended in an earlier cagcast. I own the ps2 version from last year and the game is pretty much the same, except I have not yet figured out all of the game since my Japanese is well, beyond rusty.

p.s. Glad to see cheapyd back on youtube, I hope Tai was tasty, some furikake would have made it a meal..

What is up Cheapy and Wombat? Just had a quick piece of advice for Cheapy after seeing his Tai video. My son just turned a year old last Saturday, which is a good thing, but there are also a couple of bad things that go with it. He loves to run wild in our apartment and he hates his toys. No matter what toy we get him, he'd rather go into the entertainment center and throw my game cases everywhere. I'll come home from school and my 360 will be on because he grabbed one of my controllers, blah, blah and blah. You get the picture. Just some advice for you because next thing you know Tai will be crawling, then standing, then walking and then finally he will be grabbing your shit! Good job on the show, keep up the good work!

Hey CheapyD and Wombat

I’m a long time listener and big fan of the show, and I think you guys are doing a great job.
A few months ago Cheapy was talking about having his friend build him a gaming PC. I was wondering what ever happened with that? I was real excited to hear that Cheapy was going to be getting into PC gaming as I feel it is underrepresented on the show. I know it is a common misconception that it is too expensive but you can build a PC that will play anything out for around $800. Plus the prices of games are much less than on consoles for example I just bought Prey off steam for $5.

Keep up the good work,

Dear Cheapy and Wombat, on the subject of Nintendo's first party games what do you think about the future of Nintendo? This is just pure speculation but if we picture video games specifically on the Nintendo platform do you expect that review scores will stay the same (close towards your Frank analogy) or will the scores dwindle? What's the status on having more guests on the show? There's got to be someone out there who either listens to the show or lurks on CAG that you can set up an interview with! If you can't get anyone from Rockstar, Microsoft, Sony, Konami, Nintendo or whoever, then why not ask CAG rolandx, the guy who made that US-developed WiiWare game? I bet they'd love more free plugging, and even if they don't want to talk about insider stuff too much, the guy can at least gab about NPD sales data or something.

Edit: and I really was thinking about this before I read thorbahn's post above.

Don't give in to the damn fools who say it's pronounced "carry-okie." But you could stand to shape up on certain other words... it's MAH-ree-o (or, if you want to be really Italian, you'd pronounce the R more like the R in karaoke, closer to MAH-dhee-o) not MERry-o.

On the topic of language — Cheapy, I have a question that has nothing to do with videogames, but I'd be thankful if you could shoot me a short answer anyway. I've been giving serious consideration to pursuing a year-long contract for teaching English in Tokyo starting in the summer of '09. I have a bunch of experience working in schools and I work as an English copywriter, so I think I'd have a decent chance of getting hired, but I don't know any Japanese. Bearing in mind that I DO NOT have a Japanese wife, how well do you think I could get on in Tokyo with almost no Japanese knowledge except for "thank you" and things I can read from a phrasebook? How much trouble do you have when you're out and about, without Shiima to translate the world for you?

The CAGs On News song is awesome. And so is Wombat's live CAGs On [Bags] remix.

I was thinking about the online issues that we all love bitch about on the PS3 (no cross game invites). Perhaps, the its not as easy as we would all think. It is not really a question of how and not why? Currently the only games with invites are COD4 (to the best of my knowledge) and that is because it was a developer add item as there is no standardized system on the PS3.

Think about this for a min; the PS3 has only been out for a year but it of course has a few multi player titles (COD4, Burnout, Resistance, and Warhawk for example). Wouldn't it be fair to say that you are going to have to substantial patches ALL of those games to run on the new standardized system?? (including games like GTA4 and whatever the hell game comes out before they get this up and running).

(P.S. Sony ... please add a standardized chat/headset)

Hey Cheapy, when Tai learns to talk will you please bring him on to the CAGcast so we can hear him in all his glory.

Also (for both of you) with Microsoft cracking down on achievement cheaters by resetting their gamerscore, banning them from previous achievements and branding them as a cheater, don't you think that the cheaters could easily just create a new gamertag. This way they will still have 0 GS but will be able to get previous achievements and won't be named a cheater. What is your verdict on this..............verdict.

With GTA4 finally on the horizon its time for some hype wagon speculation on everybody's favorite sandbox. Of the secrets revealed (through previews as well as trailers) what strikes you as the most exciting? What tiny details would you love to find hidden in the game? With the recent cheating policy that Microsoft has enacted, I was thinking about cheating in general in games. How do you define cheating? Entering codes in games? Looking at GameFaqs? Exploiting a bug? Where do you draw the line? Also, do you define cheating differently for single player and multiplayer modes?

My take: Personally, I love that sense of accomplishment of figuring out a tough boss or puzzle by myself. So I only go on the Web to look up hints after I beat a game to find out what I missed or what I could have done better. Otherwise, I feel I am cheating my experience of the game.

Cheapy, I see that you are going to start a tiered system for CAG membership to bring the community closer together. I love CAG and plan on picking up one of those memberships. I noticed that under the Platinum section it only lists an autographed picture of you. I think if you throw in an autographed picture of Wombat as well, that may seal deal for alot of people. If I could get an autographed picture of both of you, the Platinum membership would be a no brainer.

This question is for Cheapy.

So you only go out of your apartment if you're:
A) Going to the Grocery Store/ Toys R Us

So when you're at home besides sleeping, eating, playing videogames, taking a shit, and anything CAG-related what else do you make at home ?

Wombat,

I'm starting to get interested in comics, but after reading up on some of the story lines, it all seems a little overwhelming with all the alternate universes, etc.. Any suggestions on how to best get into the hobby? Any chance on maybe adding a comic segment to the show... nothing fancy, just something where you could comment on new comic releases you've picked up or whatnot?

Cheapy and Wombat,

Are there any classic arcade games that you wish would come to Live arcade or PSN or even the VC.

And also, I don't understand the hate on that EA pay for guns game. They are being very up-front about it and players know that going in. It seems like there are dozens of FPS's out there with free guns that people can play, so I don't see why people don't just vote with their dollar instead of bitching about a game that might suck anyway(oh wait it is the internet....).

Have either of you played resident evil 4 for the Wii?

If you have, what are your thoughts on the control scheme as a gateway for more mature/shooter games?

If you haven't - what the fuck are you waiting for! Go play the game and answer my question.

Wombat, despite your countless previous playthroughs, I heavily recommend trying it out for the Wii as the controls make it feel like a totally new game. I've been through RE4 on the GC about 3 times and I'm loving it for the 4th time on the Wii.

Keep up the great work with the podcast.

Hey guys. First off i love the show. Secondly, Knowing that CheapyD likes the western games like Gun, Call of Jaurez, and possibly Red Dead Revolver how would you feel about a Western style RPG or MMO. I ask this because i happen to love those games and western films like 3:10 to Yuma, Proposition and Seraphim Falls (to name a few). The idea of a really well done MMO or RPG Western game really puts a smile on my face.

And to Wombat, With Dark Knight, Hulk, Ironman, the Spirit, Watchman and the 2-3 X-men based movies coming out within the next year or so; which Comic character (other than green lantern) would like to see made into a movie giving that it would be done justice and not by uwe boll. And what are your thoughts on the possibly upcoming Avengers and JL movie even though Batman and Superman arent in it?

Cheapy, for the love of god, either learn to read or practice the names of things like precipice and CAG names (LIKE MINE) *before* you do the podcast.

Wombat - what are your favourite video game podcasts to listen to other than the Bombcast?

It was interesting hearing differing opinions on the Penny Arcade game.

I think Wombat has a valid point about the pricing for the game, especially the point about it being piecemeal and too expensive for the fact that it's episodic. And the point about the console breaking and waiting 20 days to be able to play it again is also true.

On the other hand, saying it's a flash game just by looking at screen shots *isn't* fair, and I think he should play it before he starts criticising it on that front.

Cheapy - The head of Microsoft UK came out today and said the following:

"The horse that we're fundamentally backing is the one that says the future of entertainment content is online digital distribution. I would argue that we backed the right horse... If we're sitting here in 12 or 18 months time, we'll be saying 'why were people even thinking about a disc format when it's really about digital distribution?' Our strategy's been developed for the last six or seven years, and ever since we launched the platform it [online content] has been our big, big, big bet."

Which means either

A) They backed HD DVD to be a pain in the ass to Sony

B) They're full of shit and are trying to make it look like HD DVD never happened

Hard to say which is liklier.

Your comment about digital distribution being the future of gaming is line with Microsoft's and both are flat out wrong.

North America simply does *not* have the capability, bandwidth wise, to deliver the kinds of files that Microsoft is talking about.

On top of that, you have ISPs across North America throttling bandwidth of people who download torrents.

Do you honestly think someone is going to wait 3-5 hours for a download when they can run to the store, have a physical copy of a game *AND* be able to go to the store and back and start playing the game within 20 or 30 minutes?

There's no chance in hell that digital distribution is going to be the future of gaming. Maybe in places like South Korea where they don't cap or throttle the internet, but not in North America.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

You are *dead wrong* about this.

PS Here's the link to the Microsoft article.

Not sure if anyone asked this yet, but what do you think of a video game rating system based on how much you would pay for the game or how much a game is worth compared to other games?

For example: Conan for 360 obviously rates at least a $9.99 purchase since that sold out so quickly on GoGamer. But Avatar for 360 barely makes the $9.99 purchase mark since I believe it is still in stock at that price on GoGamer. And your recent CagCast, Wombat rated Dark Sector at $15. Now if it ever goes to that price, I would take his recommendation and buy it. If I see it at $19, I might think twice.

What do you guys think?

My sister teaches English in Korea and didn't know any Korean. I don't even think she could find it on a map.:D However she teaches K-2 grade levels, I don't know what levels you'd be teaching. But she loves it and is getting along fine with her now limited vocab.

I think I'd be teaching through an independent tutoring company, not through the school system, so the age range would probably be pretty wide — teens to adults, I'd guess.

Yeah, I think I'd be okay after a few weeks of absorbing some basic vocabulary. I would just be worried that I'd get in a bind really early on due to not being able to express something very simple — like maybe I can't ask where the bathroom is, so I shit myself. That kind of thing.

I take my DS to college nearly every day, except lab days, and have found numerous uses for it when out and about. First, is the games, they tentertain me. But recently my cousin visited from Japan, she speaks nearly no english... So before she came I had her buy a DS game in japan called Kanji Sono Mama..something blah blah. I read online that it was the best DS japanese to english dictionary. Well I don't think she would have been able to cope during her stay without it, for nearly every english word she saw she had to enter it into the DS and then the appropriate Kanji/kana came up and she instantly knew what was going on.

Just curious, but during your Hori DS stand review you were using the DS to do your "homework". What program were you using?

And also what has been the best, or important, use you've gotten out of your DS? Entertainment on the sh*tter doesn't count...

p.s. I just saw the Saints Row 2 trailers on gametrailers. wtf was that sh*t about? Gary Busey, the Toothmasta!!!

You can't compare Korea to Japan though. I am dating a Korean girl, and have plenty of Korean friends living in Seoul, as well as plenty of Japanese friends living scattered across Japan. The difference is much greater between cultures than you would assume until you actually interact with them on a closer level. The Koreans are much more open to practising their English by helping a foreigner than the Japanese are, and are generally much more open and friendly without knowing the person they're talking to. That's my two cents, but ask any Korean and they'd tell you the same.

Hey Cheapy and Wonbat,

I currently am a proud PS3 owner, but recently I've become increasingly jealous of 360 owners. With what seems to be some of the best games I've ever played being exclusives. Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3, I use it for all for my film needs and love the games I've played so far. MLB 08, Uncharted, Ratchet, COD4, Warhawk. But a few weeks ago I had to dog-sit for a friend of mine who went away on vacation. And he let me use his TV/360 if I wanted. So I got to play Bioshock for the first time and was blown away by the quality of the game. I then got to play Mass Effect, and got pretty far in the game and was also very impressed. GOW, HALO 3, even COD4 was better online.

So my question is. If you were in my position... A college student and a "happy" PS3 owner. Would you yourself purchase a 360?

Hey,

I've been a long time listener, but recently have gone back to re-listen to few older cagcasts. The last one I just listened to was #75. During the cagbag, one of the questions was about what movies you both like, and have to say, I was a bit impressed by both of your film picks. I am a big movie buff myself, partaking in anything Kubrick, Kurosawa, ect... I am a big asian film fan, from classics to modern times. Since I live in LA, I've spent a lot of my days in Little Tokyo and thats really where my love of Japanese film began. Being Japanese and having a large extended Japanese family, living in Japan and in the US, and with the help of torrents I am able to keep up with whats going in Japan.

Just curious to what films you or your wife watch/enjoy living in Tokyo? or what films are big in Japan, excluding American releases?

Let me start by saying that I am not a Nintendo fan boy. The last Nintendo console I owned was an N64. I think that the argument that games get higher reviews just because they have Mario or Link in them doesn't hold water. These games get high scores because they are good games. The teams that develop them are some of the best in the business with the highest payrolls. I think that every high score is well deserved.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

I wanted to get your thoughts on this demo drought we've been in since February for both the PSN and XBL with not much more than a handful of demos in the past two months. We've had demos for two baseball games, a tennis game, a soccer game, Condemned 2, Army of Two, and that's it. And that's with one or two of them coming out before the game's release. What recent games do you guys think should have had demos out by now and what upcoming games need demos to come out soon?

You guys have been vocal about DLC recently, so I was wondering what you're preferences are for how they're released? Would you prefer consistent releases starting from launch like Rock Band or releases after you've put down the game that bring you back in? And what do you think about expensive map packs coming out for games you'd never bother with the multiplayer (Darkness, Stranglehold, Turok) anyway?

My final question/topic is about a possible solution to your complaints from long ago with regard to the themes and gamerpics that Microsoft charges for. What would think if Microsoft would make themes and gamerpics free 1.5 or 2 years after the game's release, since at that point, there's no way they can't still be selling enough picture packs for Perfect Dark Zero to warrant charging for them anymore? The bright side for Micosoft would be that they'd get good will from new 360 owners and those turned off by the prices before while still being able to sell to the fans that buy these things around a game's release.

Hey Cheapy,

Did you hear the latest Stern where Artie got into a fight with his assistant and possibly quit the show? Since Howard is now on vacation I think it might be a stunt to leave us wondering about the show for a week. Why don't you and Wombat get into a fight and leave us with a cliffhanger?

Do you watch any tv shows in Japan? I know you can not understand anything but I figured maybe your wife can translate or some shows might not need translation like I don't know, their version of WWF maybe.

You might want to note that the good shows are translated and placed on the net days or hours after airing.

Cheapy and Perhaps, Wombat.

In an episode of CAG (few weeks ago) you were talking about Paprika, an Anime movie you had seen.

I was wondering what other anime series or movies you have seen? Living in Japan you must see allot of anime everywhere like on Billboards, at cinemas, on TV etc. What is this like? Are you much of an anime fan?

Being Australian and having Jack shit to do, I've invested a great amount of time reading Manga and Watching Anime while not playing Video games.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

I have an awesome wife who games with me on Wii, PS2 and DS. We have been planning on getting a PS3 this Christmas along with an HDTV since we are graduating and getting real jobs. However, now they're coming out with the special MGS4 80GB PS3 this summer, and the 80s are hard to find in stores now it seems...

Should I still wait to get my PS3 along with my HDTV, or is it worth it to suffer through standard def for a while in order to jump on the chance of getting the bundle? (Getting the HDTV this summer is not an option) If so, how can I convince my wife that it is worth getting it early even though she doesn't like the MGS games? What do you think the chances are of PS3 getting another price drop again between then and Christmas? Do you think there's a chance we'll lose all back-compat. for all SKUs? It's so complicated...

How do you guys feel about video games being made off movies?

IMO: I think its decent concept but the execution never works. There should be a some kind of rule to all studios that video games movies should never be allowed EVER. Do you agree or disagree?

I'd say that CAGcast 115 marks the point where Cheapy's minstrel show humor stops being a self-aware gag and starts toeing the line of straight-up hatred.

Racism? Ironic humor? Genius ambiguity? Hard to say. In any case, I'm sure living in Japan, where there are no black people besides Bob Sapp, doesn't help much.

I cry inside... but laugh outside. Go figure.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat, how about some pictures of you guys in college? I think I speak for everyone when I say I want to see Cheapy with hair.

Here's a question for both Cheapy and Wombat:

With the anticipation of GTA IV coming out, I was just wondering what kind of a "sandbox gamer" you guys are? Do you guys play the story mode first, and then go around "exploring" and doing side missions? or vice-versa? or both at the same time? Are you the type of gamers that "need" to collect every single item and get a 100% rating? Or do you just play until you feel like you're finished with the game? And finally, when feeling bored, do you guys ever just load up an older GTA game and just start dicking around i.e. shooting cops and hookers?

BTW, I love your CAGcasts, keep up the good work
